Because if you aren't playing Solo on Nightmare you have it too easy.

Cole (bringing him sets up his personal quest perfectly) and Solas (Fade expert) are a given, the last spot is debatable. Unfortunately, the presence of two spotlight-hogging uncontrollable NPCs (Hawke/Warden) means that the people I bring because I actually care about them and want to hear them talk get sidelined most of the time, so #3 doesn't actually contribute much of interest even in situations where they logically should.

 

Cassandra is okay as the "filler".

Bringing Cassandra along and not Varric is interesting, and makes me wonder what happens if you don't have either of them along.

If you don't bring Varric you don't get the whole great disapproval cutscene, if you leave Hawke behind. If you bring Cassandra the dialogue/cutscene back in Skyhold with her about the Divine still happens  and is more fluid and you get additional dialogue in Fade.
