How am I supposed to play this?

How do people actually play this thing? Do I just suck?

I've played this for a couple of days on my PC with an Xbox controller, on hard difficulty. So far I've been trying to play the battles in tactical mode, like DA:O and Baldur's Gate. Tactical mode is really frustrating and feels broken, with the camera constantly zooming in on the ground or getting stuck up in treetops. Apparently this game wants me to play it more like a third person action game like God of War.

However, when trying to do that my companions keep getting themselves killed almost instantly, and without them I quickly get overwhelmed by all the enemies. Am I supposed to constantly switch character to keep them from getting killed? I just can't seem to do it quickly enough. How do you all manage this?

Play without tactical at first. Get used to usng your character first. Turn the difficulty down while you adjust. The most likely problem is your running into areas that are too high for your level unless you screwed up your companions abilities real bad ( tank with no warcry and no shield wall for example )

Thanks! I'll give it another try. I suppose it just seems like a defeat to me to turn down the difficulty setting after getting so far (and beating Origins on Nightmare).

Actually it reminds me of the first time I played Baldur's Gate and got killed right away because I didn't realize I was supposed to press pause all the time. What is the point of a game being real time if you're supposed to constantly pause it? I still don't have a good answer to that.

Personally, I lack the reflexes to utilize a controller, and play using KB&M. And by re-mapping the control Keys, Options, and getting practice on the new Tac-Cam within the tutorial areas before departing Haven made this an enjoyable experience.

One thing that might help is that some Commnds (eg; Hold, Disengage, and Attack THIS cause I am dying!) all seem to work a little better when in Tac-Cam mode. Enjoy!

I played origins on nightmare with difficulty mods and scaling mods, but that was after i learned where all the good gear is, and all the op spell combos and such.

I started this game on normal. It didnt take long.

Right, I think I'm starting to get the hang of it, basically by lowering the difficulty and staying in the easy areas for now. But I haven't tried to fight any dragons yet.

I have to admit I feel a little disappointed, I quite enjoyed playing in tactical camera mode when it worked as intended. I recall the relief when a rift battle took place in the empty desert, with no scenery or ceiling getting in the way of the view.

As it stands, I think it would have been better if Bioware had axed the tactical mode entirely and concentrated on making it a good action game. Perhaps with only two companions that you shouted orders to in real time. Now it seems to be stuck between two different genres.

But I suppose this is how old-school Fallout players felt when first playing Fallout 3.

If you've specced your party correctly, you can pretty much just control your main and let the AI handle the others. DAI also has the usual Bioware difficulty curve, which starts off pretty hard and becomes trivial by the end.

The key to the higher difficulties is crafting. Learning where to get good schematics and where to get good materials quickly. With good crafted gear nightmare becomes really easy.

I expect KBM would work better with Tactical Mode. Action Mode seems designed for controllers.

Really all they needed to do was make vertical obstructions (trees, ceiling, etc., anything at a higher altitude than the characters on the ground) transparent while in tac cam so it won't zoom in and out at such weird angles all the time. Simple change that would make it so much easier to use. I still figured it out enough to troll nightmare mode in about a week, it definitely works as intended. It's just not quite as smooth as it could have been.

Yeah, I remember being impressed by how seamlessly the ceilings disappeared when you zoomed out in Origins. And I suppose tac cam could be fixed if they put their mind to it, but I'm not holding my breath. Right it is not just the camera, the cursor keeps getting stuck on anything that isn't flat ground, it refuses to let me target certain enemies on higher or lower ground directly or even order characters to walk there. At least to me it is just too frustrating. The reason why they released it in this state must be that most people just don't use the tac cam a lot, but play the game more like Skyrim. And that's fine with me, I quite like Skyrim.

Maybe the problem is in using a controller.  Tactical mode has its problems, but with KB&M I can pan the camera up and down and pretty much all around.  I've never had the cursor get stuck.  I use tac cam all the time.

I tried to use Tac Cam at the beginning but just stopped.  Mostly the A.I companions do just fine, I only pause and switch to activate potions or key abilities at the right moment like focus abilities.

I recommend Hard difficulty at the beginning, I've played it on hard and now with my party at level 18 or 19 with good gear the game is really easy...
