Who Actually Sacrificed Hawke Instead of Stroud?

I did - reason was roleplay, and to see what happened.  Plus I like to have every possibility in a worldstate somewhere, and I try to avoid worldstates I've never actually experience in-game.

Never again, though.  Playthrough two was Hawke over Stroud, playthrough three will be Loghain over Hawke, playthrough four will be Alistair over Hawke, and playthrough five (my canon) will be Hawke over Stroud again.

When roleplaying the first time, I tried to see things through my inquisitor's eyes.  Hawke was a stranger, a stuck-up viscount.  Stroud was making war nobly on his whole order in order to save it, and after the end that order would need a leader.

I sacrifice hawke every time regardless of who is the other choice.

Thought 6 playthroughts of DA2 I never got attached to hawke.

If anything i actually set hawke with tactics and played as Varric in DA2.

Seriously. hawke bored me so I played DA2 as Varric and based my favorite world as a "Varrics approves/gains friendship"
If Varric didn't gain blue it was a bad decision or i maxed out.

I sacrificed half of my Hawkes.

My diplomatic male warrior (Caleb) took the fall for Stroud since the theme of my World State is 'sacrifice' (my Dwarf Commoner did the US). Leliana and Isabela might be sad sure but it was for the greater good.

My sarcastic male rogue (Dante) took the fall for Stroud since the theme of the world state he was in was 'lover's sacrifice' (Alistair sacrificed himself for my Dalish, figured Dante would do the same knowing his Merrill would be safer).

My sarcastic female mage (Demelza) sacrificed herself since its the only world state where Loghain lives. If they decide to continue the Warden arc in DLC it'll be the rare moment he's seen again. Plus Loghain spent his time trying to tear down the Wardens he can spend the rest of his life aiding the order.

Stroud took the bait on my aggressive male rogue (William) and mage (Kieran) as well as my diplomatic female warrior (Catherine).

I sacrificed Hawke for Loghain, and I did not exile the Wardens. As a Senior warden its his duty to rebuild the Wardes, Hawke screwed up big time in Kirkwall and was very useless, the Wardens are simply more important.

I did on my last Hawke.

But...it was more of a mercy kill for him by then.

His entire family was dead, most of his DA2 team was dead or rivals and he really only had Varric and Merrill then.

Plus he felt such guilt over getting her clan killed, not killing Cory, failing to stop Meredith and just failing everyone else it was basically suicide.

Not that it was easy, I shall miss Alain hawke despite being one hell of a grump rogue,

Seriously painful to hear Cassandra and Varric banter on it later though with Varric basically saying to drop it.

I did, and I will in every playthrough except my Evil Bastard playthrough.

Blights suck, and it's Wardens or everyone dies. The Warden-Commander is a leader with significant sway, who can pull the Wardens out of the muck pit they've built for themselves and hopefully also rehabilitate their image. Without some strong leadership, I see the Southern Wardens just completely falling apart and becoming pariahs. And Hawke, though awesome, is just a hometown hero. Their influence is basically nothing outside of Kirkwall; and what can Kirkwall provide when the Sixth Blight happens?

I feel so awful, having to break Varric's heart every time. But this is a world which demands stark and unwavering sacrifice.

at the end of the Day, if hawke is a real champion then they could survive until the quiz reopened various fade rifts.

Could be strictly post game DLC.

leave hawke or various warden in the fade then you can get them out and fight the giant nightmare :DD

I sacrificed Hawke just so that for once he could be a true hero for just once. Most of DA2 was him being a hero but it also helped him out. By letting him die, he does something entirely selfless for once.

and I've never seen the logic of walking back all the way to the big rift in the fade (cause after you get all your memories back, you should just be able to go, right?), can't the inquisitor just open another rift with the mark? but, no we need more fake drama... *sigh*

I wondered that at first, but my explanation was: the Fade does not correspond to the real world. Opening a rift willy-nilly could well dump the group back in free-fall over the Abyssal Rift. Or a mile deep in bedrock. Or in a sulfur pit. Or in a darkspawn nest in the Deep Roads. Or who knows where in the Approach, without maps or supplies or any bleeding clue where Adamant is, or even the nearest place to find water. There's also the fact that dealing with the Nightmare deals a big blow to Corypheus. Supposedly (see below).

That said, the sacrifice-setup does feel a little contrived. I have a hard time imagining that our companions just run blindly for the rift without a care for the others, especially for their leader. I have an equally hard time believing that Stroud and Hawke must absolutely have another stupid conversation right then and there (even if it's a reconciliation this time instead of an argument), cut off from the rest of the group in still very hostile territory crawling with demons, when there's still a battle to win and people dying on the other side. Most of all, I have a hard time imagining my Inquisitor just politely hanging back and letting them do so instead of verbally whipping them on with the threat of leaving both of them there if they don't shape up NOW. The relationship between the two was so strained and weird that I could barely remember they were supposed to be friends, and Stroud showed essentially no emotion over it afterwards. Plus, the Nightmare returning seconds after being defeated kinda flies in the face of the whole "banish it and you free the mages and banish the demon army" thing. Was its power over them really broken by being mildly inconvenienced for about ten heartbeats?

On my first PT, I chose to sacrifice Hawke over Alistair because:

  1. The Wardens needed a competent leader to drag them out of this mess.
  2. If I recall correctly, Hawke was insisting that he stay behind.

Though on my next PT, I plan on leaving Alistair/Loghain/Stroud behind because I want to expel the Wardens from Orlais.

I did. I have regretted it since. I plan on saving him instead when that mission comes up.

I did and would gladly again for 1 simple reason. This Hawke is a ****** (male or female). To quote Hawke "Grey Warden's are evil!!", "Blah Blah, cry cry, Grey Wardens gone too far!".

Wrong. In my first playthrough, Hawke's sister was a Grey Warden and she talked about killing the mages and how evil Grey Warden's were like it was nothing. Completely out of character.

i did. Hawke is just a Hawke, plus after this whole 'blood magic is evil' rant i could do nothing else. and Stroud needs to reeducate banished Wardens

Chose Loghain to stay behind in my first playthrough, but will choose Hawke in the second one. We'll just have to wait and see which one turns out to be the "better" choice.

Anyone disappointed with the actual sacrifice scene?
I was expecting something all out with that epic yet bittersweet background music similar to Grunt's in ME3. Instead we got a couple of miss swings (mage Hawke) *facepalm* and a black out. Missed a big oppurtunity there Bioware.
Although I give points for that scene with Varric where he asks "Where's Hawke?" ...twice. That hit me in the heart.

I'm up to this point now in my second playthrough. In my first, I left Stroud to die because he's basically a throw-away to me whereas I was attached to my Hawke. I guess I should bump off Hawke this time for the sake of difference, but I dunno, I couldn't bring myself to sacrifice the chargers in either playthrough. Help me out BSN, who lives and who stays?

Have never gotten Stroud, But yes I sacrificed Hawke to get Loghain. I was hoping to get a famous and skilled General for the Inquisition. (What the guy did at River Dane was no small feat) But alas he leaves to go to Weisshaupt to play messenger for some reason =(.

Still don't regret saving him though, The Grey Warden Order is on the brink of Collapse. The Warden that approaches reveals Loghain is the last remaining Senior Warden. Then there is that crap going down in Weisshaupt in the Epilogue... My Inquisitor would rather The Grey Wardens survived as an Order so he saved Loghain as one of the last remaining senior wardens and then started giving em recruits (The Mayor, Blackwall)

I chose Stroud 1st two times to rationalize saving Grey Wardens. Last playthrough I sacrificed my aggressive Hawke cause it just seemed appropriate to her personality. Gonna sacrifice Loghain this time around.

Between Hawke and Loghain, Hawke will always be left behind. In fact, Hawke will always be left behind, period.

Reason? I do not like Hawke. Also a contributing factor - Hawke in general is far too incompetent to be an asset of any kind.

I did in my second playthrough where I tweaked my world state to have Alistair as the warden ally. Next time around Loghain will be the warden, and I'm not sure how that will turn out

I did. I hated Hawke and everything that went wrong with DA2, so it was an easy decision.

I also did, she may die there and then she may not.  Stroud was the only reasonable Warden left in the order, one does not kill unicorns.

I did sacrifice Hawk, and oh lord his death animation must have been wrong beacuse it looked like parody. Varric's "where is hawk?" Line was said two times exactly the same which made the whole thing terrible
