It really feels like my universe. It seems like all my choices, or lack there of, are coming back. No wonder it took so long to get a sequal out. You really know how to set the bar. I have no idea how you will get over that bar and set a new one for ME3.

I never finished the original because of stability and performance issues with the PC client under Win7. After about an hour of playing ME2 I'm tempted to tough out the prequel just so I can import a save to take advantage of all the extra content possibilities aside from the default canon storyline when you create a new ME2 character.

Solistus, you are missing out a lot of tiny bits and pieces that make this game exceptional. For example, if you start with the default, you don't get the talk with the Council, and Udina's funny reaction.
You don't get Helena Blake, which has repented.
Hell, when here my Shepard got a message from his mother, I was very touched. References in dialogue come quite often.
I would say that the game has a lot of elements that are excellent. But it is the continuity that makes it truly superior.
I completely agree with the OP and applaud the developers. And bow to them. And expand my shrine to them.
