Is Explosive Shot horrible?

Not sure if I should be getting Explosive Shot or not. I've read that some people like it, but looking at the numbers, I feel like it shouldn't be that great....

It does 100% damage (not 100% BONUS damage... just 100% damage) with 2 hits... so it hits 2 targets for normal damage? Or if there's a bunch of clustered enemies within 4 meters I guess it hits them all for normal damage? Or maybe for 200% damage?

With the skill upgrade to chain reaction, it would be 300% damage maximum.

Or does it become 600% because 2 shots?

Can someone clarify this for me?

I might be thinking about this the wrong way, but I think Explosive Shot's Primary function is to deal AoE damage for Archers, and to combo to do things like Poison Cloud, etc.

Its combo potential is likely what it exists for.

I see. It's not a detonator though, right?

It's two hits per target, one hit is physical damage, the other is fire damage. So effectively 200% damage per target. The fact that half of the damage is fire is bad against fire resistant enemies, but nice against heavily armored enemies in the early game when you aren't set up to Sunder all the time. I also like it for the knockdown effect; it's brief, but putting a Terror on its ass for a second is a nice wave to interrupt its shockwaves. Later on, as your single target DPS climbs, it becomes less useful unless you're dealing with a tight pack of enemies, but it's still a pre-requisite for Pincushion, so you keep it around anyway in case you need it.

It has AoE effect, as well as an apprent Knockdown. This makes it worthwhile, even if the damage may not be as great as another choice.

It's better than auto attacking, and the knockdown is ok. The aoe is quite small though, a point emphasized by the fact that you cant actually target an area, just an enemy. It's not ideal. It's probably the first ability to get the axe when deciding what ability to drop from your 8 slots.

Its not a great skill and likely not going to be one of your 8 precious active slots mid to end game.

I have a selection of shots I fire in a row. One of them is Explosive Shot.

1. Full Draw - 800% weapon damage (+ 800% damage bonus at full health = 1600%), stuns and allows extra damage for three or four more shots

2. Long Shot - 200% weapons damage (600% at 15 meters), 8 seconds

3. Explosive Shot - 100% weapon damage, radius 4 meters, 2 x shot - fired into a crowdy room pretty much clears it

4. Leaping Shot - 12 arrows with each 50% weapon damage - extremely good on enemies with high health when all arrows hit

Add eventually rings to this. It will give you 30% extra damage. I normally use Enhanced Leaping Shot and Enhanced Explosive Shot.

Most enemies are down after this cocktail. You can clear a room by your self if you have a decent bow. Perfect for hunting wyverns and most higher level demons.

Yeah its pretty crappy, but i like giving it to the ai. Its a skill it cant mess up. I try to combine it with poison. If varric manages to poison several enemies with it then its worth it.

The knockdown is handy, and I've permanently switched to it over leaping shot which is also only situationally useful. The good thing about the arrow is that it helps you to control the battle field, which if you're on nightmare is great. It basically disables an opponent for about 5 seconds. The upgraded Full Draw is your first massive disable (for 20+ seconds), and the knockdown arrow is your second one which you use before you pile the dps on the second target.

Leaping shot does have a knockdown upgrade. It deals 200% damage with knockdown on the shot after leaping shot.

How do you do this without running out of stamina?

There is a skill after caltrops that gives stamina with every crit. Its why varric starts with caltrops and its amazing. Best rogue passive, well, one of the best.

Okay, but that's still dependent on random chance.

Pull of the Abyss is pretty much necessary for most AoE abilities to be useful/optimal.

Even though the party AI sucks in this game the enemy AI is confoundingly pretty smart.  They'll spread out to avoid AoE, flank, stagger their attacks and It honestly feels like they know how to take advantage of my parties horrible AI to get them killed.

Anyways, I got a little off track.  Pull of the Abyss makes explosive arrow plus poison a serious powerhouse ability.

I mainly use Explosive Shot for the knockdown and to spread poison.  Like the player above said.  Pull of the Abyss + Explosive shot is money in getting your poison everywhere.  I also specced into tempest so when fire flask is up you can spam it.  I improve the skill just for the poison spread.

Like others have said, it's mainly useful to spread poison and to give access to pincushion.

Beyond that? Not terrible, merely average.

Okay, but that's still dependent on random chance.

It's not unusual for a rogue to have 50-70% crit chance so that becomes quite reliable source of stamina regen. Especially when your shots are multiple hits and each of these hits gets a crit roll.

Yeah, its not random chance, its really steady and reliable stamina regen. Get killing them bears.

Main damage dealer for your archer should be leaping shot, consider it your "shotgun" ability. Takes a huge chunk out of their HP.

I actually fought ideally within close range as an archer due to it, and it actually works quite well with long shot upgrade you can line up incredible AOE damage, your closest target won't get hit for much but the one at the end would be lucky to be alive.

I didnt even use explosive shot, I only had it to get Pincushion

Not using poisons with most Inquisitors, and when on ledges, finding that another Knockdown effect besides leaping Shot is nice to have in the quiver.

Just remembered: stamina gain abilities seem to work BEFORE the cost of a skill is deducted. So you'd still need to fill up the meter to at least 65 sta via auto-attacks before Full Draw, and similarly for the others.

Thats refering to on kill abilities though, and leaping blades may not be effected regardless ( most likely due to the slower projectiles changing the order of operations)

How do you do this without running out of stamina?

Huh! I don't know. Never thought about it.

I start with Full Draw. It stuns the enemy for a couple of seconds. In these seconds I only shoot normal shots, but they do extra damage like critical shots. I have a feeling, and after the third shot I shift to Long Shot, which also stuns shortly, and I add one normal shot. Then I press Explosive Shot, which also have a short stun delay, also adding a single normal shot. The enemy is at this time getting up close and I fire the Leaping Shot. I jump backwards and get a distance again.

Now there is a short delay between this first row and the next shots - which is Long Shot and Explosive Shot. After that I shoot normal shots until the stamina is ready. From here on its pretty random. I don't have stamina enough to take down a Great Bear, which has loads of health. But I also have my team mates helping out, so normally I don't loose any health. Maybe 3 - 10%.

Firing this row of shots is like doing things in slowmotion somehow. Time almost stands still because you have done it so many times. I have the shortcuts set up on exactly the same buttons in every playthrough. I hate being confused and use time finding the buttons to push.
I played Unreal Tournament Assault for about 11 years in a clan. You learn how to set up your keyborad. There should be no confusion or time delays. It must run smooth and automatically, just like breathing.

By endgame my archer was able to fire off 4 full draws in succession with flask of fire, first 2 cost no stamina (have to be fast, lock on to your next target while you're firing the first), then the last 2. Bloody dragon killer too.
