Are we talking about sleep? I feel like we're talking about sleep, because I think it's the only one where the status can be removed by basic attacks. My advice is to not use your knockout powder on the target currently under group dps. If you see attacks landing on the target, don't use knockout powder or bomb on them, because there is a high chance that they won't stop immediately, especially if they are using some ability.
Or just stick to Freeze/Stun/Paralysis.

Change your mentality. Do not try to play around combos so much as in DA2. In DAI, combos are less powerful but really more common.
Just try to make a set up so you can create combos non-stop all the time.
For example, if you have a templar or a rift mage in your party, since you will be giving enemies weakness a lot, be sure to have a mage using chain lightning. Because weakness+shock=sleep. And do not even worry about attacking or not attacking sleeping people. If they dont, they get CCed a lot. If they do, you are detonating a combo so doing a lot of damage.
The trick in DAI is to create a lot of CC all the time, no matter what. Combos will just start poping up.

I assume you're playing rogue. If you are indeed, you're better off detonating combos rather than setting them up.
You have Twin Fangs and Deathblow as dual-wield both on 8 seconds cooldown, and Long Shot as archer again at 8 seconds cooldown. That's the best detonator setup in the entire game. Only tanks have similar cooldowns, but they actually need stamina for other things since their primary role is not damage.
On the contrary, as combo initiator, you have only Sleep on a 20 seconds cooldown.
In my opinion, you should let the mages/warriors setup the combo, by setting those abilities as preferred (Winter's Grasp, Lightning Bolt, Pommel Strike and so on) while you sneak up behind and deliver tons of punishment. Lots of fun! ![]()

I see that one of my problems has been that I have mostly disabled all the set up and detonator abilities on each character and have tried to do everything myself manually, where the AI is pretty good at doing some of it for me.
I'll take all those abilities of disabled and see how it goes.

Keep in mind, you instruct your party to attack target A and then instruct them to move or hold position, your party will retain their targeting, therefore once they stop moving they will resume damage on target A.
As mentioned by another poster, in case you're a rogue and you want to detonate yourself, something you can do is have your party attack target A, then have a mage (for instance) cast winter grasp on target B without losing original targeting, and then immediately detonate with your rogue. The disabling effect is safe on target B since nobody else is attacking.
But yeah, generally the party is good at combos. You can enable/prefer primers and detonators in your party, and they'll taker care of the rest.

Probably a stupid question; where in the game can I look up what combination of powers give you a combo.
Finished the game on Hard, without thinking about them, but my Mage probably wants to use combo's on the Nightmare difficulty I'm about to start this weekend.

Theres a table half way down. note 2handed skills do not combo properly for shatter/rupture.
Also, weakness + shock will induce deep sleep, meaning solas can perma weaken perma sleep mobs.
