Blackwall.
Solas, obviously.
Veric
Cole with bow if your into microing. If you perfer A.I, Sera.

I don't understand this, Cole and Sera don't have different AI systems. Cole with a bow (and the same talent/prefs as Sera) is identical to Sera with a bow, no?

I usually run with two warriors, a rogue and a mage.

The brutes with the shields distract everything while my mage and rogue dps the hell out of their taunted arses.

This way I can play on hard without needing to use the tactics camera, which I cannot stand.

Basically if are a mage or rogue you take blackwall and vivenne/solas depending if you are KE or RM. And Sera for DPS/Cass for Demon hunting rift clearing or anyone for flavor.

on nightmare as rogue, i took solas vivi and blackwall and never died after i got to skyhold.

as a warrior I played a SnS tank champ, had Cass 2hand and stacked her with party buffs. [valor horn, blessed blades] then varric and solas for lock down.

and to be fair i didnt recruit anyone else.

sns tank champ is pretty funny. everything hits you but you dont die :DD

I'd spin in circles with walking fortress active in front of taunted enemies. more so since i had the shield and armor have different levels of walking fortress 3 and 5 seconds. And my one hander had guard generation.

I'd disengage spin around then reengage and just screw around on nightmare with quizchamp.

Personally, a tank like Cass plus either two mages and an archer or two archers and a mage with the former being better in early levels since you can alternate barrier from two mages to mitigate most damage.

I've spent the last hour or so with Cole in my party, to hear some new banter.

I wondered if it would work out well, given that we're both archers (me Artificer, him Assassin).

... it's amazing. I think I'll be using the two archers, one tank and one support mage set up for some time.

Man, I love this game. I'm constantly finding new ways to have fun.

When I don't need a warrior to bash down walls or do a companion quest, I like using 3 dagger rogues and a mage. Mage casts barrier and CC to cover the first couple of seconds, and the dagger rogues gently murder everything before it can deal damage.

Seeing an enemy get swarmed by dagger rogues is a joy. Even overleveled enemies have difficulty fighting back, because they keep having to react to attacks. Plus, almost the entire party has stealth, so it's easier to sneak past fights.

I run with the following set up:

Recipe - 1 Tank, 1 Rogue, 2 Mages

Cass - Tank and because she's awesome

Varric - Ranged Rogue. May switch between Sera/Cole just for variety

Dorian - Mage and because he's awesome (favorite side character since Balthier in FF12). I hear Necro is bad, so I might not use his specialization.

Vahn - Mage (going KE). There are Jedi's in Thedas. Enough said.

Pre-skyhold, I've never died and I've never ran out of potions. I'm actually thinking of turning up the difficulty. But with this setup, I've had a solid experience!

Best party for me was :

Inquisitor : Rift Mage

Prefered : Dispel, Revival, Barrier

Enabled : Chain Lightning, Stonefist

Role : Crowd Control and Barrier mage (Will put enemies to sleep and detonate them into nightmare)

Special : When Barrier breaks with 2 points in the frost tree, it does an Aoe Frost Nova

Cassandra-Shield Bash or you Mages-Stone Fist will detonate that.  Also, dispel could cause a small detonation.

Solas : Rift Mage

Prefered : Dispel, Revival, Barrier

Enabled : Chain Lightning, Stonefist

Role : Crowd Control and Barrier mage (Will put enemies to sleep and detonate them into nightmare)

Special : When Barrier breaks with 2 points in the frost tree, it does an Aoe Frost Nova

Cassandra-Shield Bash or you Mages-Stone Fist will detonate that.  Also, dispel could cause a small detonation.

Cassandra : Templar

Prefered : Charging Bull, Spell Purge

Enabled : Shield Bash, Shield Wall, Grappling Chain, War Horn

Role : Will completly destroy Guard and Barriers, will crit on those for 5k+ ... Also, decent crowd control

Blackwall : Champion

Prefered : Charging Bull, Pommel Strike, Walking Fortress

Enabled : Mighty Blow, Counterstrike, Grappling Chain

Role : Each Pummel Strike will be followed by a Dispel Combo (causing weakness), then Chain Lightning (causing sleep), then Dispel again (causing nightmare).

------------------------------------------

*) First and most important, the AI described above will play smart, you can control any of those characters, but I usually control Blackwall.  It is always fun to witness the AI detonate dispels left and right.  The AI is actually better than me at doing so.

a) Warriors can open locked doors with shield bash or mighty blow.  No need for a rogue.  You can always fast travel back for those "deft hands" locked doors.

B) Shocked (chain lightning) + Weakness (Stone Fist) = Deep Sleep.  With dispel on prefered, you will see combos flying left and right and very decent damage.

c) Set every single party member to use 0 potions, except for Cassandra.  They will use their barrier or invulnerability skills to survive fatal hits and if all else fails, you have double revive.  Seriously, the strength of this party is its surviability even when you have 0 potions left.

d) For Dragons, just disable Chain Lightning and Enable Energy Barrage.  Then, equip a staff with an energy to which the dragon is vulnerable.  Cassandra will melt through guard.

e) Fun factor.  I fell like controlling a tempest rogue sometimes feels like cheating.  You burst so much damage, you feel like you dont even need your team.  In other words, the main reason why I like this setup is because my team supports each other and combo off each other's abilities.  It really feels like teamwork.

The best party is sky hold. Specializations ko 1 having to care who is in your party.

So 1. Sky hold then 2. Best banter.

Having just run four archer party (Me as an Artificer Archer), I must say that it is beastly.

Cole one shots archers while Sera and Varric tear down melee enemies (he also helps with CC) and I handle crowd control.
Cole has to be directed not to waste archery talents on melee enemies though.

1 Tank
2 Mages...1 support, 1 DPS
1 Rogue to pick off weaker enemies

You can use either an Archer or DW rogue as it doesn't matter since they should be selective of their targets anyways.

I like playing a duel dagger tempest rogue with the following party.
Duel dagger tempest rogue (me)
Cassandra s&s Templar tank
Solas rift mage support build
Cole assassin archer dps
This build allows me to dish out incredible damage while giving me a good amount of survivability. I love opening up on mobs with the following combo: Solas casts pull if the abyss followed by wrath of heaven and spell purge from cassandra, Mark of the assassin plus leaping shot from Cole, and me using thousand cuts. Everything dies in 5 seconds max and it feels so satisfying :)

My current party.

Inquisitor: Bow Artificer.

Cole: Bow Assassin.

Solas: Spirit and Rift Mage.

Cassandra: Sword and Shield, pure Tank.

I usually play on hard as I find Nightmare a bit of a grind, and I cannot stand using the tactical camera. That isn't the case here. Now Nightmare is essential to provide any challenge at all.  A two archer party is insanely powerful. And the dreaded tac-cam? Rarely needed. My critical chance in 57%, and Cole's is 43%. With Artificer as my spec, my cooldowns are virtually non-existent.

What about for dragons on hard/nightmare? I find mages and rogues just keep getting range attacked by dragon spits while warriors do fine spamming charging bull to gain guard at the dragons feet.

issue is Ai is not as good as Taunting as Player, look here (its not my char)

& here

dragon range attacks ur mages when tank get knocked down cause then he is free to attack awry1, & mostly it is when he attacks tank & ur mage gets in the way, mostly the problem is drgaonlings (when dragon summons them) not so much as dragons range attacks

I generally always keep one warrior, one mage and one rogue in my party at most times. That's really the only rule of thumb I use when choosing my party, and even then that rule sometimes goes out the window if I want to mix things up a bit.

For dragons on nightmare, I like 3 dagger rogues (2 assassins and a tempest) and a mage. Rogues standing directly underneath the dragon, mage off to the side. Rotate in a warrior for dragons with guard, to take advantage of guard stripping.

The faster the dragon dies, the less breath attacks and kicks there are to avoid, so I just overwhelm them with dps. :D

Alternately, using the elemental resistance tonics works wonders for your ranged attackers' longevity against dragons. Just make sure you have the right type for the dragon you're fighting.

The game favours ranged classes on average. Before getting specializations, DW rogues and 2-handed warriors tend to burn down potions. Especially during rifts with a lot of ranged types.

That said, a good set up early on can be.

A tank

A barrier

and

Two ranged dps.

Late-game, anything goes.

Currently running this combo with only 2 tier 3 crafting things, no topnotch dragon ingredients.

Dorian - Necro / Fire / green Spirit = THE damage dealer, so hard to keep aggro from him if he gets going, not using spirit mark! Those pets annoy me.

Blackwall with Vanguard party dmg buff; Iron Bull burns down too many potions unfortunately, have to babysit him, although he does incredible dmg

Solas - good Backup mage, heavy frost for shatter combos, Rift spells not bad too, nice to have Spock around for lame advices

Sera does not do it for me damagewise, AI not strong enough to be really effective I think, because rogues should use rotations a bit

Viv - I think KE is boring and you know, ...

Varric - hm, AI not using abilities well

Cole - good damage, but eats lots of dmg

Cassandra - was my main tank then dismissed, lost and forgotten. Do I have to babysit her dispels? I am on a dalish and chantry hater walkthrough hehe
