Add Varric to that rule.  I love the guy, but dang.  He will NEVER be a decent dragon hunter, if you ask me.  "Oh, look, Varric's down again," I sigh.  In fact, I've pretty much decided that rogues, as a rule, shouldn't be dragon hunters.  My best grouping always seems to include two warriors and two mages.  Solas, in fact, has this unique ability to hover eternally at like 5% health, as I'm wondering how the heck he's managing to stay standing. 

 

But the absolute best, is The Bull.  Who chants at me every time we approach a dragon we're about to take down, "Boss, you are THE best."  And I'm thinking, "Yep, don't forget the article, Bull."

I've actually had great luck with Sera. My "dragon smash team" changes depending on what class I'm playing. Rhiannon is a Templar and that dragon couldn't even touch her. Dorian and Viv were doing great, but I forgot to unequip fire-based staves. Cole, omg, one hit and he's down. I've been using him a lot on this playthrough because I don't wan to get in the habit of using the same group of campanions all the time. Honestly, he's horrendous in combat if you don't micro manage. If I had swapped him out for Sera and cold-based staves for the mages it would have been a super-quick fight and I wouldn't have had to lower the difficulty. I think I might go back tonight and re-try with a more organized group.

 

When I play a rogue, Blackwall or Cass is great to bring as the tank. Then either two mages or one mage and Bull. If I'm playing a mage, I bring Sera, either Blackwall or Cass, and either one other mage or Bull. 

 

To get my combat screenies, I pretty much have to auto-fight. I leave the flycam on and pause every second or so while the AI handles the actual combat - which means that one companion pretty much sits there. In this case, that was Cole.
