Well, the title speaks for itself..

Here I am, a noob to the Dragon Age world, and upon personal experience and 3 resets, I find the Rogue Tempest Archer build to be the most effective and fun way for me to explore Thedas.

But comes the next thing that I have been going to and fro--my party members. With all the research I did, turns out I really do need a good tank, so I'm sticking with Blackwall built on the Ultimate Tank Build (Vanguard and Champion skills only). I'm not even reaching the Champion skill tree yet, and Blackwall is doing real great out there keeping is guard up almost every time.

Now the other two, uggh.. I'm thinking Iron Bull with a Nightmare Two-Handed Warrior build (11 points to spend on the Two-Handed and Vanguard skill trees, and remaining points to put under Reaver), and Vivienne with a Support build; or Vivienne with a Semi-Support Knight Enchanter build together with Solas with a Semi-Support AOE Rift build.

Thoughts guys? Other combinations are welcome as well. The major thing that matters for me as of now is that I don't want to switch frequently between party members out there on the field and just let the AI do their thing out of their respective builds.

Also, maybe asking too much, but I also need help with Targeting behaviors.

Wheww, Thanks a bunch in advance!

I prefer cassandra for her amazing party buffs and dispel skill. Dispell is amazing. It clears enemy barriers, prevents the second wave in rifts, and removes many deadly effects. Blackwalls skills are overkill to me, though he may be fun to make 2 handed with champ.

vivian isnt gonna be the best mage for your party. Honestly, i havent really used her, but ive heard many people say the ai stuggles a lot with her specialization. I also hate her on a personal level. Shes freakin nuts man.

Varric is amazing because of his party wide buffs. He offers a +5% crit chance, +10% damage, and +10 duration on effects. Its a lot of the same reason i prefer cassandra. Your a dw rogue too. If you are critting a lot then varric will have his cooldowns reduced because of your crits. With a good team varric can use his abilities like crazy.

Iron bull is cool. He is hilarious with bull rush on preferred.

Wow, got a different viewpoint with that one--thanks!

Just gotta ask what build this "party-wide buffs Varric" is built on?

Varric's Artificier tree confers several party-wide buffs (Tricks of the Trade confers a damage bonus, and Take Them Down confers a critical hit chance bonus - which syncs nicely with Iron Bull as he should be doing everything he can do maximise critical hit chance).

The downside with Varric is that it's easy for his damage output to plateau in the late game.

People are right when they say the AI can't use Knight Enchanter very well, so Vivienne is at her best when you take control of her personally. That said, you don't HAVE to build KE for her - you could just dip into it enough to grab Combat Clarity, and then she'll have enough mana to keep Barrier pretty much permanently active, meaning you can take whoever you like.

The one thing I would say is that this game holds a fair few obstacles only a certain class can pass - walls only warriors can break through, doors only rogues can unlock and barriers only mages can break, so make sure your party has one of each (which for you, means taking one one warrior and one mage) if you like exploring. I don't think these obstacles ever block off anything that is plot-critical, so it's possible to get through the main game without a certain class, but then again, who doesn't like sticking their nose into every chest for the loot?

I got to say, the party you get in the beginning (Cass, Varric, Solas) is mostly what you need for the entire game, whatever spec you chose for your main char. Only Cass and Varric offer big party buffs, and Solad can help a lot with the CC and combos.

Varric's mines and Solas's pull of the abyss work very well for AoE. I also give Solas the Static Cage as a preferred option for more CC/damage. From there, it's easy to nuke every common ennemy without you even getting involved.

Vivienne is really not worth it.

You can make any party work. Pick the guys you like having around and don't die.

My Inquisitor is an Archer/Artificer Rogue; my party consists of Sera (Archer/Sabotage/Stormweaver), Blackwall (Tank) & Cassandra (2H) pretty much since I picked them up. So I play on Nightmare with no mage, and I'm not the guy who generally likes insane challenge runs in games. Dragon fights are a bit over-micro-manage-y, but I guess a DPS mage only mages them shorter, not a whole lot less awkward.

Generally, I never really feel like my party is underpowered.

You can still give Viv all her knight enchanter passives which works well with anything else, give her chain lightning and Wall of Fire.  The rest in Support Tree.

And she will be the best support ever. Just don't let her use Spirit Blade.

Huh? I disabled all her active skills except Fade Cloak and Spirit Blade. She was a beast.

I cast her Barrier, Dispel and Chain Lightning manually.

That works for me too. But my post was for those who thinks she is crappy with KE spells.

Nah Vivienne is great. Set Spirit Blade, Fade Cloak and Barrier to preferred, and then enjoy never dying. She's super broken. Set her to follow herself so she doesn't ignore enemies right in front of her that she could be spirit blading.

I'm currently using Blackwall, Solas and Vivienne on nightmare on my DW tempest run through, and I'm breezing through it. Pull of the Abyss and Frost Flask is a hell of a drug, especially combined with all the aoe detonators I have.

To the death is just so amazing on bosses, that I couldn't leave home without my bearded bulwark Blackwall. (Alliteration wheee) Cassandra's templar combo is better for mobbing, though she lose a lot of power on bosses that are immune to it.

As a rogue archer my normal party is Blackwall, Solas and either Iron Bull or Sera.  Since I am an archer I actually specced Sera into DW and she is still a bad ass. The AI seem to control her the best for some reason.

On Dragon fights I tend to stay with more ranged or two tanks depending on their level compared to mine.

archer is already a crutch and is very easy to play. just having bw and vivi means you win.

you can do nightmare with archer blackwall and vivi and no fourth.
