Talk to everyone you can. That's the single best way to get the most content. Also, when you are walking through a safe area like the Cousland castle or Denerim market, pay attention to the ambient conversation. That can clue you in to stuff that is not readily apparent.

I envy you! There are some nice mods on the Nexus http://www.nexusmods.../dragonage/?   ...   Holy crap! Somebody just made a Big Butt Armor mod!

Hmm, you might want to play vanilla Dragon Age first so you know what the mods are actually changing.

Omg OP I envy you!!!!! :o :o :o

- Talk to everyone you can, enjoy every conversation!

- Watch out which gifts you give to each character, not every character likes certain gifts...

- Adjust the TACTICS on every character to get the most out of combat.

- Buy the expansions in case you haven't gotten them already. :3

- Get the Improved Atmosphere mod from Nexus (also Advanced Tactics for your next playthrough XD )

- ENJOY!!! Half of the posters here envy you for the experience you are about to have. I hope you have as much fun with this game as we did. :)

All right. Now, the mage can get one of the best specs in the game, but it's also one that is a sort of obscure quest to get in the Brecilian Forest.

You'd have to build your mage right from the beginning to get the most out of the Arcane Warrior though, so look into the role your mage plays in your party, if a spec stands out to you, feel free to ask and I'll recommend which spec fits that role.

And get the skip thr fade mod. That whole part is such a life suck and adds no value imo

This. The tab key is your friend. There's MUCH in the game you'll miss if you don't use it, frequently.

IMO You should not use skip the fade on your first play-thru. The only mods I would use are cosmetic/hair and romance. :D

Besides, you can get a lot of free attribute upgrades in the Fade.

"skip the fade" has all the codex entries and attribute points. You get them just before fighting the sloth demon. But on a first play-thru, you won't be tired of this quest, so by all means play it. :)

If you invest in the Glyph line of spells, do not miss out on paralysis explosion (repulsion then paralysis glyph on top), it runs a risk of friendly fire, but it's double duration and it cannot be resisted.

Overall, mages can dish out tons of damage, but what they really excel at is crown control and boosting the party. Don't miss out on that entirely, even if you really just want to shoot lightning at fools.

Trust me guys, I have no intention of skippiping any part of this game. I actually just started over because because I made some choices I didn't like initially. Loving the convos in this game :3

So, this is my first time playing a game in the series and I am pretty excited. Any suggestions?

Kazumasoju,

In regard to combat:  after 2 playthroughs (with frustrations) I was about to give up & move on to my next game.   My team was just WET NOODLES.    Enemies would just surround them as they just stood there being pounded on.   When I started my 3rd playthough, I thoroughly explored my TACTICS panel for each player.   I couldn't believe the defaults were so wimpy (bad Bioware!).   Should have better default tactics than the Mickey Mouse tactics  .

By fully exploiting the tactics panel, my squad NOW literally beats the crap out of every enemy before I can even draw an arrow.  Holy cow!   Take some notes on everyone's TALENTS.   I’m sure there are grand masters out there that could lecture for days on this – but for starters may I suggest --  select:

ENEMY (text will be in RED  if “enemy” is selected).

Submenu Target @ range (there will be 3 choices):

Sub-Submenu:

1.       TGT @ short range

2.       TGT between short & medium range

3.       TGT between medium & long range

Assuming you’re NOT a mage – and consider if you have ONE or DUAL weapons.   I have DUAL swords so here’s mine:

TACTIC1: ENEMY>TGT @ short range>switch to melee weapons

TACTIC2: ENEMY>TGT @ short range>attack

TACTIC3: ENEMY>TGT @ short range>whirlwind    (and while that’s cooling down--)

TACTIC4: ENEMY>TGT @ short range>flurry          (and while that’s cooling down--)

TACTIC5: ENEMY>TGT @ short range>dual weapon sweep (and while that’s cooling down--)

TACTIC6: ENEMY>TGT @ short range>deadly strike             (and while that’s cooling down--)

TACTIC7: ENEMY>TGT @ short range>below the belt  (by that time, it recycles back to #3)

TACTIC8:   ENEMY>TGT @ short to medium range>switch to ranged weapon

TACTIC9:   ENEMY>TGT @ short to medium range>attack

TACTIC10: ENEMY>TGT @ short to medium range>arrow of slaying

TACTIC10: ENEMY>TGT @ medium to long range> (same as 8,9,10)

In the case of Morrigan (mage): (it's even more fun)

TACTIC1: ENEMY>TGT @ short range>drain life

TACTIC2: ENEMY>TGT @ short range>cone of cold

TACTIC3: ENEMY>TGT @ short range>horror

TACTIC4: ENEMY>TGT @ short range>shock

---if that doesn’t kill the enemy, it neutralizes them for Shale or Sten to easily mop up—

TACTIC5: ENEMY>TGT @ short to med range>lightening (and while that’s cooling down --)

TACTIC6: ENEMY>TGT @ short to med range>stinging swarm

TACTIC6: ENEMY>TGT @ medium to long range>fireball

TACTIC7: ENEMY>TGT @ medium to long range>chain lightening

TACTIC8: ENEMY>TGT using magic attack>glyph of neutralization (extremely useful!)

TACTIC9:ALLY: health less than 75%>lifeward (heal the squad)

TACTIC10: SELF: health less than 75%>injury kit

For very physically STRONG allies like Sten, avail of his strength with sword & shield bash (close) and holy smite at med & long range.   If you haven’t availed yourself of exploiting the tactics panel, you’re in for a very pleasant surprise.   In fact, the tactics are so superior to my own combat skills, that sometimes I assume the dog and just go into the corner and watch the show.

Enjoy! ;)

The Arcane Warrior combined with Blood Mage is the most poweful, and entertaining build in this game. Also, no matter your class, take advantage of your second weapon slot (press the "/" key). This is extremely useful, and gives you the opportunity to control the battlefield more efficiently. One more thing, spend some time in your Codex. Reading these short bits of information will do nothing except deepen the amazing atmosphere of this game. Last thing. Try to avoid mods in your first playthrough. I feel like it is very important to experience the vanilla game first. Once you hit your second run, by all means, download them. I'll even hook you up with some links to some fantastic mods.

Go vanilla for the first few playthroughs... at least two playthroughs.

After that, use mods. It will bring your game to a whole new level of immersive experience.

Oh yeah...I guess the fade was good the first time I played :P :) skipped it the subsequent 5 times tho! There's a banter mod that triggers it more too, improved atmosphere I think? It doesn't cut anything out or anything, but NPCs arent just standing around and waiting for you to talk to them. Even your companions sit in camp! Wow...

Plus it triggers banter in more areas so you're likely to hear everything in one playthrough. I have the dreaded BB in DAi so it's sooooo refreshing to hear these guys talk to eachother on cue! :)

Hey guys it is my first time playing too.  I am playing as a female elf mage.  I kind of wish I had selected a human mage cuz i got the romance going with Alistair.  I played 35 hours before I knew about mods.  I have played through Ostagar(sp?), that horrid fade with the sloth demon.   OMG I thought that was never going to end.  Then the forest with the werewolves, was kind of interesting except I cannot beat those guys that appear at the tombstone.  I did the Mage Tower and rescued Connor and now I have just arrived at the Denerim Market.

I downloaded some mods to enhance the looks and hair and a few other things.  I am having loads of fun playing this.  I got all the expansions but haven't played any of those stories yet.  Should I do some of them to get stuff added to the game?  Also how much stuff should I hold onto in inventory?  I'm always afraid to get rid of anythihng.  Plus I can't seem to have enough injury kits.  Is there anywhere to buy a ton of them?

Also I discovered the tactic screen just a few days ago but I'm not too good at it yet but I have set up some pretty cool stuff to happen.  Can you ever have more than just 4 people in the team?  I would love to have the 4 people and the dog.

You do not need to do most of the DLC's for the main game. The ones you should do are integrated into the game itself. I strongly recommend you do Soldier's Peak and the Stone Prisoner ASAP. The first will get you a chest so you can store your stuff and the second provides my favourite companion.

As for holding stuff, I think it's a base 75 items. Buy backpacks. They add to your storage capacity.

What to keep is a good question. It really depends upon how much you want to micro-manage things. I like to, so my advice may not but worth much if you are pretty hands off. In general, I sell all the lesser salves and poultices. As whoever is doing herbalism for my team progresses, I ditch all the less capable healing poultices and lyrium potions. At the end of the game we only use potents and greaters, typically. as for armor, if it's generic (ie leather or chain), sell it if it is lower quality than what you and your companions are using. Put your main companions in the best gear available, and scale down from there.

In general, named gear is better. Tier seven (dragon/drake) is best then silverite and so on. Decide what each companion is going to do for you and then specialize them with tactics, skills, talents and gear to do their job. Wynne is a popular choice for healer, for example. If that's what you decide, then she should have her tactics adjusted to use both heal and group heal at appropriate thresholds (I like 50% of health) on you and your companions. She should have a good staff with good range and robes that amplify either spellpower or magic.

If you are using Alistair, he should have his tactics set to annoy the foe. He should also be set to use a health poultice, attack the nearest foe and to use his special attacks on mages. He should have Shield Wall up at all times. He should have the best armour. And he should have a single handed weapon and a shield.

As for injury kits, you and your companions heal up completely every time you return to camp. Return to camp early and often and you shouldn't need to use all that many injury kits. The monsters will wait patiently for your return :). Anyone with herbalism and the ingredients can make them if you need more. Wynne has herbalism (FYI).

There is a mod on nexus that allows you to have Dog as fifth companion. It can be buggy.

Hope this helps!

Thanks that helps loads!  I am thinking of starting over but the thought of facing that sloth demon again and those ruins for the werewolves is very daunting.

Is there any guides for helping understand the best way to apply your points as you upgrade?  I am always so wary of whether to apply to magic or strength, etc., thinking I might make a mistake.  I see there is an auto upgrade that you can turn on but then I don't know the algorithm the game would use to apply them.

Is there a mod that you can use on companions that would let you reset all their points and reassign them?

Also when you are at camp and going to set out for a new adventure how do you know which companions to take?  I was taking Alistair, Sten, and Morrigan.  Now I am taking Alistair, Wynne and Lelianna.
