Here is my problem.  I start teh game, and everything runs smoothly.  I was, at first, going to use my turtle beach diesel headphones, so I plugged those in, watched some videos while it decrypted through Steam, and then started Mass Effect 2.

Every other sound effect was loud and proud.  The music was good, the beeping, etc.  Then Miranda started talking.  I could barely hear her.  So then I turned up my volume, but soon her voice, and the Illusive man's voice, were drowned out by the music.  I closed the game, switched over to normal speakers, but same issue.  I can't hear any voices, evenw ith game music and sound effects muted completly (which sucks, by the way).  I trie dplaying with subtitles, barely hearing any voices, but then, the audio cut out whenver someone was trying to use a comm.  Oh, and my subwoofer wouldn't respond to the base at all.  It was just my speakers, unless I unplugged them, which than only gave me sound through my sub, which completly sucked.

So I"m asking bioware and the community.  What is my problem?

I am running Windows 7 64-bit.  I have Realtek High Definition Audio drivers, 5.1 surround sound for speakers.

Please help :(

No I haven't. Unfortunately I have to go to work, so I'll be testing this out in a few hours >.<

Your issue sounds a little similar to something I ran into awhile ago while trying to play some movies on a new speaker set up. My settings had it set up for 5.1 surround, but I didn't actually have support for it. Since most surround sound setups use the central channel for playing dialog or voices, it was playing really low or not at all in most cases. In which case, setting your sound card to 2.0 like Gebut suggested may solve your problem.

I have a similar set up, using the same OS and audio drivers, but I'm getting a slightly different problem. Everything is playing at a suitable level, but none of the voices during the first cut scene are in sync, being 5 seconds too early, so its like hearing commentary on events that have yet to happen lol

Unfortunately, realtek does not have a 2.0 setting. It has other settings, but none which include a sub, which is only 5.1 surround.

And Lemondish, I'm sorry I don't know hwo to fix your problem. I'm assuming that you already messed with the graphical settings. Perhaps try to end some processes that don't need to be running while playing the game?

I just had this problem when I re-install ME2 into my new system.  Lemon, your above explanation was very good and solved my problem.   I know this is late but really appreciate your advice given to the OP.

When I used Realtek HD I went to the sound properties and turned on "loudness equalization".
