The one between the mages and the templars.

I wish I was cartoon Judge Wapner right about now...
It was difficult for me too. I'm quite resentful about having to choose between my extremely pro-mage inclinations and...Ser Barris. LOL.
Ser Barris among other things makes the picking the templars the better gameplay experience in my opinion
That being said I'm not entirely sure what my ideal epilogue after the events of Inquisition is yet.
Choose Mages (In Hushed Whisper)
Pro:
- better cinematic overall
- the Villain of this chapter is very very "human" & is in gray area as of his motivation. Just real good one
- Better & deeper character development of Cullen (you also get his nemesis quest. And he comes with you to the field) --> Slightly more angsty Cullen arc. Also, my favourite line of his romance line is in this path.
- Awesome introduction of Dorian, & better character development of Dorian
Con:
- most companion disapprove (I ally them)
Choose Templars (Champion of the Just)
Pro:
- Ser Barris. He's undeniably awesome. And you get one freakingly awesome scene with him in SKyhold.
- Awesome introduction of Cole
- the Villain is freaking awesome
- lots of people like Venatori General better than Red Templar General
- I got better "sense of fulfillment" when doing this compared to In Hushed Whisper
- most companions approves (I made them ally)
Con:
- Much less Cullen screentime.
I've done both on separate Playthroughs. I must say that personally I love them both but prefer a little bit more the Mages side just because of Before the Dawn nemesis quest & Alexius.

Conscript mages - Cassandra Divine tbh. Best ending tbh.

Depends. Are you romancing Cass? ![]()
That's part of consideration for me...

But yea, it's a hard choice. I always tend to like the mages better, but in the case overall I like the Templar side more even though it means forgoing Cullen's personal quest.
I choose the mages following tradition. In past games following templars always involved mass murdering possible innocent mages, but this time around templar is really good, and feels a little bit more canon this time (there are at least 3 cinematic later that were done first for templar path and later adapted to the mage path).
Damn... I can't read the responses because spoilers!

Choose Templars, Jer!
>"First time" in title.
>People post spoilers without taggs.
Honestly... they did a really good job of making both choices appealing whereas in the past it's often been take the mages side or take the templars side who are just going to go murder everyone (slight exaggeration obviously).
I liked the templars side slightly better, because the story seemed more consistent that way.
I also liked one particular scene you get in the hunt for the Venatori leader, the very final one.
On the other hand, Alexius. I feel really bad for him when I choose the templars.
I've done both in my two playthroughs - I preferred the templars choice, even though I would normally side with the mages (DA 2 left me with a very strong dislike for templars)
Oh! I also like the development with Dorian when you side with the mages.
Go with the templars. Better recruitment mission, better storyline, better nemesis, Ser Barris is a better leader than Fiona.
God I think they're both great.
(Spoilers ahead)
Pro Templar - Dorian coming to you DESPITE this just makes me squee. I think his entrance was wonderfully dramatic, fitting to his character (more so than Cole in the same situation, imo). Therinfal Redoubt is awesome. That fade part is amazing, the way your advisors are utilized within it.
Pro Mage - the crap HITS THE FAN when you're back with your advisors - they yell at you, yell at each other... The drama is very palpable. Also, this made me love Cassandra as she stays incredibly loyal to you and backs you up despite disagreeing with your decision.
Siding with Templars as a mage and then disbanding the order was deeply satisfying to me.
Next playthrough I may go Templar specialization and side with the mages.

Coin + Toss = Guilt Free Decision Making

I didn't actually angst about this decision the first time I made it, largely because the templars show up in Val Royeax and punch an old lady! Fiona meanwhile appears perfectly reasonable after all the drama. Even the Tevinter situation didn't immediately turn me off once Dorian made it clear there was muckety muck time manipulation magic going on and Fiona might not be herself.
It's only how Fiona behaves afterwords that made me beat my head against a wall and wail "what have I done?" So from now on I'm totally metagaming this one up. The only time I'll side with the mages is if I'm doing a 100% mage freedom/destroy the Circles character. Otherwise, Fiona's got to go. She's the last of the crazies who refuses to compromise, and she's not going to bollocks up any deals the sane people work out because she didn't get 100% of what she wanted.
I got a solution for people who won't compromise: I don't compromise. Dead people don't have to compromise.

WHAT???
Cullen gets a personal quest if you choose MAGES? *pulls out hair* I chose templars specifically because I thought Cullen would get more story content if I help templars since he is one!!!
I thought his only quest "take lyrium yes/no" was a bit on the thin side... ![]()
One question: Who is Ser Barris?
I just finished the game for the first time and have avoided spoilers up until now like the plague.
Ally with mages- Leliana as Divine. Best ending tbh
I thought Leliana's role in the Mage plot was amazing-scary.
So if you want to see a very scary Leliana, go to the Mages.
You can pick either one, as long as you conscript em Jer, both should bend the knee.
I'd lean more towards the Temp route, better nemesis, prefer their recruitment mission also.
I'd say Templar, I just found that mission to be better done than the mage one. Plus dat Ser Barris.
