I usually just play as my character during combat but once I switched to Viv for awhile and I noticed her barrier increased with each attack SAY WHAT lol.
Story wise you miss nothing, combat wise your losing a great powerful mage that whoops alotta ass

I think you can't get her as Divine if you don't recruit her which means that Leliana or Cass will have to be divine which means Cass could break up with you if you romance her and she becomes Divine.
Can anyone confirm/deny this? Because I keep getting her as Divine when I don't want her, so if leaving her ass home guarantees that, I'm OK with that! (Besides, I hardly use her anyway--I hate her snotty attitude, although I give full props to the voice actor!)

Getting her as Divine is a combination of a lot of choices/dialogue you have with people. There was a whole thread about how to get each one, I don't remember where it was though
One of the easiest ways to not get her is to tell everyone you possibly can that the chantry, templars, and circles all need to be changed and reformed (or abolished).

There are some dialogue options that give little nudges in one direction or the other, but it's the major decisions in the game that seem to have the biggest influence.

Considering quite a few people warn me about Vivienne's intentions. I think I'll pass on recruiting her from now on.

The only penalty is to your wardrobe - she does promise to take you to see her seamstress one day!
She says she would do it, but she never does!
Who plays with people's hearts like that? Cold-blooded b*tch... ![]()

I agree that she's rather mean toward Solas and Blackwall, but when it comes to Sera almost all of their interactions start with Sera trying to be a smartass Vivienne just responds in kind.I'm probably going to skip her my next play through as well. She's downright nasty to Blackwall and Sera and Solas. I benched her just for attitude toward Blackwall. Give me Dorian and Solas any day over the bigoted social climbing snot.

Without her you're putting an awful lot of pressure on Josephine and Dorian to keep the Inquisition stylish.

There's no penalty to not recruiting a companion aside from the basics. I never recruited or encountered Sera in my first playthrough. The most you'll miss out on is a ridiculously overpowered Knight Enchantress.

The penalty is your fashion sense will be dreadful, darling.
