I know I've seen complaints about male elf arms, which I understand, but I personally find the female elf arms to be HORRIBLE.  I understand that they were going for a more willowy, kinda long and thin look.  But I feel that the female elf mage exemplifies what is wrong with the elven female frame.

As you can see in the image above, the thickest part of the staff is wider around than the UPPER part of her arm.  Accounting for perspective from the staff being farther away, the thinner shaft of the staff is equal to or wider than her upper arm itself.  That leaves virtually no room for muscle.  I find it ridiculous that she can even lift that staff, given that her arm must be skin and bones alone.

 

It's not just her arms, either.  At first I thought her legs were fine, but upon closer examination, it's only because of the extreme slenderness of her arms that her thighs looked okay even for a second.  I never thought I'd see the day where DA2 elves looked HEALTHIER than other dragon age elves.

 

In general I've found the increasingly thin frames of female protagonists to be perplexing and off-putting.  Why not look like a Xena type?  By no means overweight, but contoured and with enough meat on their bones to look capable of wielding a weapon and wearing armor.  Even if I can't luck out and get Xena, I'd at least like a thicker model than what's available to us in future games--ESPECIALLY for elven women, who suffer from skin and bones syndrome the most.

I don't feel like reading all that. Have you actually seen them in game? They're arms look nothing like that picture. I found the arms pretty normal looking, for elves that is.

I agree with the sentiment of this post, though it doesn't bother me too much in practice. But I prefer my dwarf dagger duchess and my qunari claymore queen to my elfy elite enchantress. Those two are slightly thicker milkshakes.

The Xena part was for female protagonists in general.  I don't even think the human female is as meaty as Xena.  For elf I would like something other than skeletal.  You can do thin and willowy, sure, but does it have to be just skin and bones?  Considering that the skyhold outfit is still adding the bulk of the cloth to her frame and arms, meaning that she's even thinner than she appears there.

I get that Elves are supposed to be skinny, but it just makes them look ill. There needs to be a bit more of a balance.

I don't know... they're elves.  They are not human.  They shouldn't have to conform to human standards.  That look is normal and healthy for them.  I do see what you're saying, they are exceptionally thin, but it it doesn't really bother me since they're a completely different race.

I think the female elf looks especially strange since her arms have no fat or muscle, her legs are almost as skinny, her neck is very skinny but she has unusually large breasts/butt. The only fat on her body is in specified "woman areas." I think if female elves had a shape more like Keira Knightley they would still be slim and dainty but they wouldn't look oddly proportioned.

 

I wish human females would be in the middle zone as far as bulk, but I wish Qunari women were more muscular and that Dwarf women were chubby.

I agree completely.  More variety would be nice, and given the large proportions of the Qunari, it would make sense if the females were more inclined to be thick and contoured.  Instead we have skeletal for elf, and still pretty dang thin for everyone.

That works for me if the race is extremely non-human (like Salarians) but DA elves look 95% human and 5% mistake someone made because they aren't that good at art and anatomy.

Yeah I can't help but stare such a big almost bubble butt but she aint got fat anywhere else. It's mind boggling.

 

Lady qunari still has a big booty but she is a bit thicker in the lower body so it's not AS bad. (still ****** noodle arms need to die in a fire).

Strangely,on a female elf, at least for the tier 2 light "battlemage" style armor, if you try to use the "bulkiest" tier 2 light armor arms (the "mail" armored big shoulder ones) it distends your arms and turns your hands into these monstrous clawed things.  I will screenshot when I get home.

Exactly.  Even just making the elves more alien looking may have sufficed.  Maybe something similar to TES elves, with strange, alien eyes and crazy bone structure.  Mind you, they'd still be very human, but even a difference like that might make their frames more believable and palatable.

Unfortunately the noodle arms on female characters are something of a standard for BioWare models in DA throughout. It's not limited to the elves, they are just getting the worst of it since it combines with characters being thin in general.

I've noticed that.  I personally liked the look of the female protagonist in the KotOR series best.  They were still thin (as was pretty obvious), but had a thicker waist, arms and legs, and were generally pretty believable when it came to being physically powerful and capable.

If you look at human populations IRL that live like this they seem rather malnourished to our eyes but in fact they are probably more healthy than most people. Elves are slight to start off with so the Dalish who are very physically active and eat a low fat diet would be rather thin. (Kate Moss thin).

 

What makes them look so odd in DAI is that they used a human model for Sera which give her more modern proportions but one could argue that her lifestyle living amongst humans gave her access to a more fatty diet and she most likely led a less active life than her Dalish counterparts as well. Tho she is too big for a modern Elf. (See my post on who I think she really is.)

If you look at human populations IRL that live like this they seem rather malnourished to our eyes but in fact they are probably more healthy than most people. Elves are slight to start off with so the Dalish who are very physically active and eat a low fat diet would be rather thin. (Kate Moss thin).

 

What makes them look so odd in DAI is that they used a human model for Sera which give her more modern proportions but one could argue that her lifestyle living amongst humans gave her access to a more fatty diet and she most likely led a less active life than her Dalish counterparts as well. Tho she is too big for a modern Elf. (See my post on who I think she really is.) 

Except a low fat diet, provided that they actually ate properly (which they should, considering humans did decently enough in a Nomadic lifestyle for hundreds of thousands of years without keeling over), would still have them have some muscle and be bulkier.  Just by constantly being on the move, foraging, scouting, going over rough terrain, etc, you would build up a leanly muscled frame.

When my female Elf is nude (romance scene) she is plenty muscular. Being muscular does not mean being bulky. That is a modern western standard. In the photo below the woman is plenty muscular she just isn't bulky or "fantasy muscular" Notice how muscular she is and how small her arms are.

Yes, that woman looks plenty muscular (I would be completely satisfied with human or elf women like that), too bad none of the women in DA are built like that. The only race I'd like to see bigger and more stylized than that are the Qunari because that's how the Qunari men are.
