I am pretty sure Nathaniel Howle survived Awakenings, and in DA2 I saved in act2 Merin, the son of Yehven.

 

But the Keep wants me to set Nathaniels status as dead in order to let me choose the saved Merin option. Is that normal?

Yes. The importing from DAA to DA2 was bugged - if Nathaniel survived you were supposed to get a quest to find him, if he did not (which is what was incorrectly imported into DA2) you would get Yevhen's quest.

If you're dead set on having saved Merin, yeah.

 

On the other hand, if you're really keen on Nathaniel being alive, pick that tile instead.

I just meant that Nathaniel will not appear in DA2... but I found on the DA wiki a workaround in the command console...

Now another question to those that finished DAI:

What is actually more interesting in Inquisition?

• Saving Merin?
• Saving Iwan?
• Or the Nathaniel cameo?

 

I bet its the Nathaniel cameo... but it don't hurt asking  

By the way I do not see why these quests are dependend on wach other.... they take place in the same location, but other than that, these are separate stories...

Ah, thanks for the information, Kilo! I thought that was a bug in the Keep, not in DA2. A pity I didn't meet Nathaniel in DA2, then, I was really fond of him

Your're welcome. It was really just a cameo in a straightforward combat quest, i bet you can find it on youtube.

The only way for Nathaniel to live into DA2 is for him to be in your group when you fight The Mother.  I didn't ever do Nathaniel's quest in DA2, but supposedly Varric's last armor upgrade is there, which is stupid. However, I think the Yehven quest is way better than Nathaniel's sounds because of how it mirrors your Dee Roads trip.

Never did Yevhen's quest. Nathaniel's has the added value of meeting (SPOILER) your sibling again if (s)he became a Warden (/SPOILER)
