I just bought this game, as I am a fan of the previous DA games and PC rpg's in general...

WHAT THE @#$% is with these controls?!??

I can't seem to find any information on fixing them, via a user made mod or otherwise...and the game is completely unplayable as it is. I just can not believe the level of ineptitude that went into making it like this... why change it ??  why????

Any way we can get back to "click to attack" "click to go here" ETC.  ...like it was and is in every other rpg??

In tactical mode (T) you can unpause (Ctrl) and stay in tactical cam mode, this lets your right click to move/attack/and auto attack.

I changed my keybindings to this:

Move Forward: W

Move Backward: S

Camera Turn Left: A

Camera Turn Right: D

Move Left: Y (german keyboard, would be Z on english ones) - not used, really

Move Right: C - not used either

Toggle Auto-Run: F

Sprint: Shift

Jump: Space

Interact: E

Search: Q

Cycle Targets: Tab

Basic Attack: X - again, not used

Pause: Ctrl

Attack my target: R

I don't use the tactical camera either, so I didn't change anything there.

It takes a little while to get used to Space not pausing the game but you do need to be able to jump for quite a few things.

Honestly, the first 2-3 hours of the game were a total mess until I changed the keybindings.

I beg people to stop saying this game have some redemption. No it doesn't.

From day 1 they told me key biddings, tactical mode etc would solve gameplay problems...

From day 3 I guess, people said leave Hinterlands...

I left Hinterlands, I am perfectly fine with controls...

GAME IS BAD. REALLY BAD.

Unless you are a casual gamer and will probably skip most quests and exploration in which case game ratings range from 8~10, this game SUX, and its score is somewhere between minus infinite and minus infinite + 1

Shards, mosaics, regions, landmarks, etc, etc, etc

Did it all, it is MASSIVE ****, MASSIVE

You want to like Inquisition skip 90% of its content, in fact do only the main story and it is almost a great game (so that I can forget crappy character creation/evolution and combat system)

So, no, it is not controls fault. Also, not Hinterlands fault. It is a whole game fault, it is all messed up except for the SIX hours I spent doing main quest only (cheated for power)

And yeah, while trying to stick to the main quest makes you have to farm for power doing a full playthrough left me with 400 power left in the end and I didn't even buy all the influence/power books of the tranquil

Game is badly made for hardcore players. It is made CLEARLY for random casual players sit and enjoy. Great visuals. Great story. Great acting. But the more you go in depth, the deeper you go, the worse the game gets up to the point you end up doing repetitive **** you NEVER had to do in a Bioware game before, it is almost as ridiculous as a jRPG and almost identical to generic korean MMORPG

I have no problems with my Keybindings, it is similar to that of DaemionMoadrin. I also use a multi-button mouse for gaming and that helps a lot. I tried my gamepad with it, but quickly went back to my Kb.

I just plugged in a controller and played with that. It made the game so much more enjoyable.

Hi OP. I agree with your opinion of controls.

Don't expect a lot of support here though. These threads more often than not attract rabid fans and console players who give amazing solutions such as 'buy a controller PC ******' or 'learn to play princess' or 'no one asked you to buy it' to such problems.

My suggestion is download Cheat Engine and the DAI Hotfix. It frees up the camera making movement less restricted. You can also try playing a ranged class such as a mage. I found it to be a lot less frustrating than playing a melee class. It also gives some real tactical depth to the game raising it above the 'mash attack button to kill' level.

Other then that I'll suggest keep at it. The controls are awkward but I got used to them midway through the game.

Pretty much this. This forum is not where you want to go to for PC support. I ended up plugging in a Xbox 360 controller to play but even after that I just gave up on the game all together and went to play other things. This game just isn't worth the frustration.

I use these controls

WSAD - movement (I never use keyboard camera controls)

Q - ability 7 (a block or melee skill)

E - ability 8 (an evade skill)

1-6 - abilities 1-6

X - Jump

Space - Pause

Z - Walk/run toggle (with mod - see my sig)

Shift - Hold to walk/run

R - Search

F - Interact

V - Party Attack

H - Hold position

T - Disengage

G - Quicksave

B - Mount/Dismount

So far it's working fine (with mods), I highly recommend the walking mod as well as the CE tables as it gives you better zoom with the tac cam as well as the ability to wear your armor in Skyhold

Click to move/loot is only available in tactical camera, hence I recommend the tac cam mod to make it playable. Unfortunately you can't use tactical camera in Skyhold/Haven so you'll have to go back to action controls.

I play with default key bindings and only swapped the mouse buttons. Works fine for me.

What exactly is your issue?

Go to Options, and take the time to choose setting based on your preferences. For Gameplay, there may be a toggle for Mouse & Tac-Cam Control; recommended. Then for control keys, re-map them to a configuration that is familiar. My game now runs much like SWTOR, and have very few issues; better than the ME series and Skyrim.

It mostly comes down to whether or not you have played some MMOs.   If you have played ESO or SWTOR, then some simple rebindings will make the controls pretty familiar.

If you are expecting controls like previous DA games, then you are pretty much out of luck.    The 'pause and play' tactical game has largely been supplanted with a more action oriented feel.

Personally, I put pause still on spacebar.   I use pause now more for re-orienting my character and camera to make up for the bad controls than I do for tactical reasons.  Jumping really isn't used much so I moved that to tab.

^^yes i want the old DA controls! really i just want to click on an area and have my character go there. Or click on an enemy and attack them. Why do i have to manually "run" there, then mash a button and keep moving while doing it?? This isn't a console game it shouldn't be dumbed down this much!  Frustration!#@$

Despite the devs insincere assertions to the contrary, it is a console game. Five minutes spent using a controller after trying to use M&K will make that abundantly clear.

I especially miss the 'able to move with wasd in iso mode (or tact mode now I guess)' :'(

Targeting seems to be the worst for me. My character will be swinging at trees, bushes and everything else while my mouse cursor is going wherever it pleases. The tactical view is pretty much unusable in most instances. They slaughtered tactics in this game. Tactics went from lots of options in DA:O to pretty much zero options in DA:I.

I used a controller because there's absolutely no difference between the K/M and the controller. It's easier to play and it has vibration feedback. So if you've got one, use it. If not, it's a good time to buy an XBox One controller.

Using a controller for a PC game implies that it was design for consoles like FF 13.

For some reason many DAI fanboys seem to be unable to grasp this concept or outright ignore it.

That is because they are console gamers trying to force PC gamers to love their console game.
