I don't think that there are too many female characters in the game, but I think there are too many powerfull people who turn out to be female

Really f*cking funny when the tables are turned and the males are "omg I'm so scared there are so many women, omg they don't care for me or my opinion at all and have their own instead. That's not right!"

I don't think that there are too many female characters in the game, but I think there are too many powerfull people who turn out to be female. I don't have a problem with powerfull women, but I also don't like the fact that only very few powerfull people are men. Andraste and Justinia have a big role in the game. leliana, cassandra and vivienne can become the next divine, morrigan is very powerfull and storyrelevant and she knows more about the world than most other characters. flemeth is an important character in the whole series, too. The empress of Orlais is female. The leader of the wardens was female. Yes, there are more male companions, but most of the companions are far less relevant than the npc female characters. The only really important male character is Solas (beside the enemy plus his minion who are male as well).

Made a similar point earlier. A lot of its to do with nature of inquisition(chantry origins/focus) and the iconic characters from prior games/novels that appeared. It also likely leads to an unwelcome imbalance in the companion split. I'd hope if they move away from southern Thedas in the next game, they'rd be a more balanced picture and a more balanced party.

But nobody cares when in other games the males are the "dominant" ones. When there's game that finally focus on women, suddenly is not balanced anymore.

I don't see why some guys are so bothered by having important female characters in the DA games, if women complained that most of the important characters in the ME series are male they'd likely get told to STFU & stop whining

They do already when asked too show female Shepard more in trailers.

What kind of "unwelcome imbalance"?

Well, I believe that those who are adults, could be able to discuss on the arguments. Flame war happens on every boards, but I truly believe that mature people should get over it.

Honey, I'm 36. This "adult" argument holds no water with me. Adults are some of the silliest people I know, thank the Maker. Because life is full of freaking crap a lot of the time, and being able to laugh and joke around and make fun of each other is what helps keep some of us sane.

On the topic in hand, forgive me for sounding like I'm speaking for everyone here, but these 'arguments' as put forth by the OP get tiresome. They have no merit. Any merit that some might try desperately to give them is generally borne out of a place that sees a defence of the status quo - where status quo in this instance means men don't want to give an inch even if it means that we can all be happier and more equal. People my age and older have seen it a million times and there comes a point in your life when you realise no, it's not an argument worth 'discussing' because there is nothing to discuss. The only option that will keep you sane is to pillory the original argument, treat it with the disdain and ridiculousness it deserves, and get on with enjoying the funner, more interesting things in life.

Have a great day :)

The fact that there's 6 male companions versus 3 female ones.

to be honest, women have always played a big role in Bioware games. Bastila, Dawn Star, Silx Fox, Liara, Ashley, Miranda, Isabela, Morrigan, Flemeth, Leliana, Tallis, Victoria...those are all strong, story relevant, independend female characters. On the other side we have Carth with his family complex, Jacob who's very boring, Kaidan who seems a little reversed compared to Ashley, Alistar who's more whiny and insecure...and well anders and solas who are okay.

but the females had always been stronger, more indepenend, with more knowledge (except Solas) and more hidden plans or positions of power

I really miss strong, independend male charcters with hidden agendas or powerfull positions in bioware games.

Which is the contrary to most High Fantasy world depiction elsewhere. So, it's a bad thing if BW, for once, make the contrary?

And the rest of games focus on males. Especially Rockstar, Ubisoft etc. So?

One company decides to make a difference and it's the end of the world. Seriously.

Yeah, weird that certain guys didn't complain about how female Shepard & female characters in general were treated in the ME series but showing the fem PC in demo's & having strong female characters in inquisition is now discriminating against males or unrealistic for the world

But why always this direction? I don't say the other games are better. But why justify an unbalance only because other games don't do it better?

Because for once it's very interesting to see reliastic female representations that is not only an eye candy. Especially for today's audience.

Let's say it: BW are selling these games to modern community. In where, women can start to play a bigger role in decision making. Equality is still a long reach. But still it's quite good to see for once a different representation than just the classical "women are there for eye candy and should not be powerful, male must be dominant or it's not OK".

Because men can not be outshined in games by woman because it will not fit their hero troupe. A woman that saves the day outrageous Cortnia says otherwise also Jack

Because it's an important corrective to an already existing imbalance in the gaming world that did not reflect the changes in society at large. In time things will sort out equally but it's not the end of the world if an important company makes some fantasy games that put women front and center in that game world.

Good for realistic female representation. I'm all for it. but I'm certainly not for unrealistic male character representation. I'f females can be strong, independend, with hidden agenda and powerfull positions male characters should have the same right. That's all I say, and in my opninion most bioware male characters don't fall in this category.

Ask this to other 99% of companions who always use dudes.

Besides, there's already umbalance in a lot of games, Bioware does it and everyone complains. Did you complained when other companies did it? Went to their forums and posted these posts?

I'd bet my house that the lot of you wouldn't complain if Bioware did the opposite.

I don't know what you mean with "a lot of you". I'm female myself.

and I would also complain if all important characters were male.

Don't forget being told to "get back in the kitchen" or similar stupid non-sense.

I think I saw that happen somewhere. Not on BSN though.

equality-vs-justice.jpg

This is a well-known picture that explains the problem you're encountering.

We are not starting with a level playing field. Or, to use the picture here, we are not all starting from the same height. In this case, men are taller. Men have been given greater representation, and for the most part still are given it. In order to make things more equitable, or in fact to bring justice to the situation, we need to give women more of a helping hand than men. Because they - using this analogy - are shorter, and giving the same to men and women will not produce a fair outcome for women.

Bob has 3 apples.

Jenny has 0 apples.

Jenny says that Bob and Jenny should be treated equally.

Bob says he has no real problem with that.

Bob and Jenny each take 3 apples from a basket.

Now Bob has 6 apples, and Jenny has 3 apples.

Wait, says Jenny. I still have fewer apples. We should be treated equally.

Bob agrees, we should be treated equally. And we have both taken 3 apples. That is fair.

Jenny disagrees. Jenny reaches and takes 3 more apples.

Bob has 6 apples.

Jenny has 6 apples.

Bob throws a fit because Jenny took more apples than him and he doesn't think that's fair.

See?

I can quote several (IMO) :) : Bull, Dorian, Fenris, Varric, Sten, Cullen among them. To some extent, Loghain. I can think more later.

These are strong, independent men, some of them are leaders in their own right. They had made their agenda clearly known since the second you met them.

The thing is, even if there are less strong/independent male representative in DA series, is this a bad thing for once? Or is it end of the world because BW had upset the classical balance of "male characters the strong powerful one & females are eye candy" mindset?
