In general, I've noticed auto shops can get pretty territorial and aggressive towards a woman that knows what she's talking about - probably because they know she can't be taken advantage of.

I get approached by middle-aged guys a lot asking about my car (at a gas station, in a parking lot, at a traffic light, etc) and they are usually very nice.

Yeah some tend to get pretty agressive with me because dad taught me how to fix the auto because he knew I wouldn't get taken advantage of by these people.

It's really heartening to see that so many people care so much about equality. It must really bother you guys when you wake up in the morning and think about how we barely have any female leadership IRL and the Church is like 99% male.....

Actually, no, it doesn't bother me, because...

You can never trust a word a politician says.

The Church is a LOOOOOOONG way from anything like it was originally intended to be, so they're just a joke to me.

So... both, I see as nothing to be respected.

(I do not think God, or belief in God is bollocks. No. Have your faith. But don't tell me the Church has anything to do with the faithful.)

Dear lord, this is the most shocking statement I've read in this thread, tea is love tea is life. I'm addicted to that sweet sweet brew and I'm not british. :P

Aye, tea's awesome.

Now comes the hard quetion.

Crim, why you never visit the Sera thread these days? :(

I live in a really conservative region and I have had 0 issues with game stores.  The ones that give me issues are comic shops.  There's usually at least one 40ish fat guy wearing a faded original Star Wars shirt breathing through his mouth following me around in those.

We don't really have comic shops around here. Only shop that sells those sells also role-games and manga, they are only one's that sells english translated manga which gaves them widest collection.. and thus lot of female customers especially teenagers. So I guess that's why there is no comments towards women who go their shop, they are used to it ^^

There was an other thread like this in some other part of BSN that brought up some good points. The DA a series has the best representation of women but the worst in men.

You guys argue that there are so many men so here is a list of them. King Cailan an incompetent, Alistair the incompetent king and companion, Loghain the treacherous regicide, Zevran the murder, Sten the murder, Oghren the drunken sexist, Anders the abomination terrorist, Fenris the angsty guy who literally crushes people hearts, Verric the compulsive liar.
And now in Inquisition the female representation is much better with Cass, Josephine, The Divine and the new one, Calpernia the former slave who is now the leader of the Venatori with a heart of gold and good intentions, Celene the reasonable ruler of Orlais, Clarel leader of the wardens who was manipulated.
And on the opposite side Blackwall the liar and murderer, Solas the liar, Iron Bull the guy who is not above killing his friends, Cullen the pretty addict, Samson the power hungry murderer, Gaspard the power hungry traitor, Erimond the *******. And a man controls the Tevinter Imperium.

Look it's pretty awesome that female have a better role in DA. But mens role will always just be the worst type of people in video games. ( yay )

I just realized that my post sounded a bit hostile. It was purely aimed at those who are concerned that men aren't the only relevant characters in a goddamn video game. If they are worried by inequality to that extent then real life must depress them terribly.

I speak only for myself, but yes, it does.

It's an important point to make, but what happens in a game doesn't only happen in a game. It's not Fight Club :D Games are a reflection of our society. They don't pop up out of nowhere with zero references to what happens elsewhere. Writers of games, books, films, tv shows, magazine articles, you name it, they all bring to their work their knowledge of the outside world, and it colours what they write, in myriad ways. And when we read, watch and play these things we also bring to them our understanding of the outside world and use it - knowingly or not - as a framework through which to make sense of what we're reading, watching and playing.

So when I get upset about representation in a video game, it's not because I only care about representation in video games. It's because I care about representation in the whole of society, and video games, film, tv, news media, music etc. all play a part in what the rest of our society looks like. Media and cultural products are constituted by and in turn help constitute the rest of society. Can they be simple escapism? Sure they can. That doesn't mean they are free-floating things that bear no relation to the world we live in. The people who made them still live in our real world. The people who play them still live in our real world. And all of us are impacted daily by real world issues. It's all connected in complex, intricate ways.

Edit: re-reading your post I think I'm coming at it from a different direction and I misunderstood your explanation. I think what you're saying is that if people like the OP are so concerned that men aren't being represented then the OP must be very upset that women aren't represented in real life. Is that right? If so, bravo, I like the cut of your gib. I'll let my original reply stand though, because it makes points I wanted to make anyway, even if I directed them in the wrong way.

I don't know much about cars, but I have noticed they get put out whenever I don't immediately accept every esoteric thing they suggest my car needs.  I get what I *know* needs fixing fixed, and then I go home to read about the other stuff and/or get second opinions before I commit to having my "decomfrabulator realigned" or whatever.  It is actually a semi useful way to identify a good mechanic though, or at least a marginally more reputable one if they don't try to sell you half the store simply because you are female.

Again woman do play games, it's not a rarity, I am relieved when the guys talk to me like a normal person at my local GameStop. Plus, I do get a ton of guys flirting with me because I know video games. So things are changing just in some areas not so much.

I have to disagree with two of these: Blackwall strives for redemption and that's a powerful story in fiction, any fiction. He is filled with remorse for his past and wants to make amends and be truly noble. Same with Cullen and Cullen's drug addiction is something that torments him and I found it powerful and ennobling how he managed to keep his head and heart on the side of the Inquisition. You also left out Varric who is pretty stout and loyal as a companion. Cole is weird but genuinely wants to do good for people.

Berry tea sounds intriguing. Amaretto is beautiful. Disaronno and coke is one of my favourite alcoholic beverages

If you like amaretto, try this mix for a change (I think it's yummy): Disaronno + Honey Jack Daniels + ginger ale + slice of lemon :) Combine in amounts you find most appropriate. I use the Honey Jack sparingly :)

The comic shops usually also sell hobby gaming stuff.  I'm not into manga so I haven't paid that much attention to where it's sold, but mostly I see it in standard bookstores.  It's also really popular in libraries here.

Same with me actually, I would get a lot of looks when I knew what would fix the Car or not possible a little bit of both views. Since most men think woman are more the easy mark due to them not knowing how to fix cars and stuff.

I do not agree with you. Saying like that, it's easy to put a two-words label of your pick to anyone.

Cass - a brash brawny gal who hits before she thinks

Josie - distressed Disney maiden

Leliana the snake

Celene the deceitful liar

Clarel the gullible leader

EDIT to add: Anora the power hungry, Mother Giselle the hypocrite

How do they sound now? Better for your liking?

In the contrary I can also easily put a good label to ALL male characters

IB the open-minded leader

Dorian & Cullen the Courageous. Yes, they are brave & courageous in their own right

Cullen the model leader

BW is an inspirational person (bad grammar probably)

Solas the unconventional thinker

Loghain the patriot (he is.)

Sten the faithful & focused person

EDIT to add: Alistair the kind & brave (king/warden), Varric the loyal friend

It's easy to label multi-layered characters with two words to bring your point, however it's also possible to use another two words to describe these characters differently

How could I forget Dorian?! Dorian rules in this game! He is a solid and stand-up guy if ever there was! I ended up taking him along on every mission especially with Sera as their banter was a hoot!

Well it's point of view. Celene is not good lol, I'd take Gaspard any day. At least he has honor if not human decency, Celene lacks both.

Maric is great, Cailan pretty adorable, Meredith is ruthless, Zevran is sexy (every companion pretty much is murdered), Fenris has lot of demons but also strenght to survive against odds, Varric is great story teller, Merrill is too naive (though adorable), Cullen is great leader.

Most characters in the series have their good and negative points. Gender doesn't really play in it from my viewpoint.

Yeah, pretty much. Sometimes IRL I say things and then kick myself because I realize that it didn't sound how I meant it. I kinda do that when I type too. I don't like the huge underrepresentation of women in video games, or the crappy roles that they are often forced into and I don't think that it's a huge stretch to connect that with the raw deal women often get in gaming culture. At the same time though, I am all in favour of more female mooks and villains and all that jazz.
