If your a Cullen fan then your siding with the mages. Because how can you miss out on taking Cullen with you during the quest against Samson.
(Spoilers) So, the choice that makes way more sense...

Very easily. He has plenty of content elsewhere.

He's still my #3 Husbando though.
I prefer Leliana's plus the temple of dumat was fun. It's quick enough to enjoy but not so long it drags.

Another reason I can't stand siding with the Mages. Having to pay for their mistakes instead of Fiona getting off her ass and doing it.
Spoiler
Y'know, I like Fiona on the whole, but yeah, I wish she'd at least gotten some degree of punishment or been forced to make up for her actions. It did seem weird that we weren't called upon to Sit in Judgement of her when in Skyhold, when some of the people we judge do far less and get far worse punishments?
Even if it was something like that punishment you can give to the mayor from Emprise du Lion, where you force her to pay back and rebuild the town with her ill-gotten money, it would have made more sense to have Fiona called upon to aid in the rebuilding of Redcliffe or make some kind of recompense to Arl Teagan?
Unlike with Ser Barris in the Templar-side, recruiting the Mages and Fiona gives her precious little to do afterwards?

At the very least, she should be stripped of any titles and privileges and forbidden from ever holding any again, yes.

If the man could truly bend the fabric of space and time to any extent that could hurt the Inquisition, he'd have done that rather than take over Redcliffe and recruit mages.
As such, there is little reason not to ignore him.
You're grasping at straws here, and you know it.

I think mages are a better choice, first they are not as disciplined as the templars so they would be easier to sway in person. Also templars rose up against their own chantry where mages simply rebelled against the conditions they were in. Sure what mages did was bad but templars going around and killing everyone? They were supposed to be the good guys so what does it say about the state of the order when a large part of them just went off on their own way to go murder some people?

I agree that the Dorian and Cole introductions make more sense if you side with the Templars. I liked Cullen's comments about aligning with the Templars too. I want to punch that one mage guy who is talking to Cassandra after you align with the mages, makes them sound so whiny.
Overall I enjoyed the actual mage quest line more.

As Cullen says, the Magister has outplayed us!
I figure getting the Templars first would make sense they can help with the breach and then handle the Tevinter Threat and mages at Redcliffe. Plus, Cole's introduction does make more sense with introducing him. I can't picture storywise the mages doing the same, seal the breach and then figure out what's happening with the Templars and help.

There's a good reason to side with the mages: they have effectively been enslaved. Fiona's leadership almost does not matter; because now there are a bunch of enslaved mages in Redcliffe, answerable not even to a local lord but to the Tevinter (okay, ostensibly indentured servant. But that's druffalo poop, and my Inquisitor could smell it). Having the mages bound to Alexius is just too dangerous, and is a really bad precedent to be setting. I chose mages my first time through because hell no am I okay with any of that.

I chose to go with the mages with my Dalish mage elf because I did like mages in previous games but holy maker, when Fiona told me that she signed up with Tevinter - I literally face-palmed myself. I mean - I get wanting freedom but come on!
Plus - I have to be honest, I was being put off with the mages earlier because the guy in Hinterland says the real rebel mages were holed up in Redcliffe and had washed their hands of the mages who were running about loose in Hinterlands causing destruction with the Templars. That made me question whoever it was in charge of the mages - how could they just wash their hands of those mages. If they pushed for independence, they don't get the option to pick and choose who they want to deal with - you deal with the whole damn thing!
And Fiona showing up in Val Roux and saying that my Dalish Elf should be looking at her own kind, I scoffed and chose the option to say they weren't her kind. Say whatever you want - you're just speaking to me now because you were worried about the Templars.
Plus - that haughty mage in the bar who bitches about the Inquisition being just like the Chantry was actually enough reason for me to want to turn around and say enjoy your new lives as slaves. See if I care. (I had Connor alive in that playthrough and he was the reason why I stayed on with the mages. I didn't go through hell with my Warden just for him to killed off because of Fiona's desperation).
I went with the Templars with my Qunari mage. She took one look at the whole alliance with the Tevinter and pretty much though, screw it - I'm going with the Templars. The only reason I went to the pub was to recruit that tranquil - there was no way I was leaving him there.
And I was actually surprised at how much I enjoyed it. It was nice to see a different side to the Templars, to work with them and to see how they work in action. Yes, Mages are flashy but the Templars were pretty awesome themselves.
And going face to face with an envy demon was just as good. (plus - no rift to deal with, that was a nice change)
Plus - Fiona tend to sit around in the library doing nothing while Ser Barris actually gets off his ass and does missions. You get war tables asking for permission to help save the mages. They saved an innocent accused of magic - which he wasn't even a mage. They brought back mages safely.
Say what you want - but that was pretty impressive itself. They admitted that they had no leader, that their order was pretty much destroyed and they had lost their way.
My Qunari wanted them to prove themselves once more to be the templars they were meant to be and I was pretty impressed with the result. Plus it was nice to work with Leliana again.
Fiona only agrees to be with the Inquisition is because the King/Queen kicks her out (which I don't blame them for. If I could have kicked her out of the Inquisition and kept the other mages, I would have done so) and she had nowhere to go.
Plus - what they did with the Tranquil *shudders* Even Vivenne is mad at what the mages allowed to happen. Surely they must have noticed Tranquil were going missing if they had been in Redcliffe.

And afterwards she's all frustrated-bewildered about why she's the one they complain at. My dear and wonderful sister-in-arms, your smackdown of that whiny mage/templar is exactly why whover told him you're in charge sent him to you. No one delivers like you do. ![]()

I wholly agree with the first post but I always go to meet Fiona in Recliffe, encounter Dorian, and then I go get the Templars.
The way I playthrough feels perfectly balanced, because I've met Dorian and he's already warned me once. So both he and Cole get really good intros if you do go to Redcliffe.

Cassandra is absolutely my favorite then Cole. That big tough Amazon woman and her love of cheesy romance novels. Her whole character is adorable and I love her progression from aggressive to being slightly softer later. And afterwards she's all frustrated-bewildered about why she's the one they complain at. that's how I prefer it! It flows nicely, plus it's funny to have Dorian barge in to help but then deciding eh lets go with the Templars instead. Although Leliana was epic in the dark future the Templar battle is even more epic for the inquisitor and people actually witness it. The Mage quest essentially took place with a wave of a hand as far as anybody in the present is concerned. Only you and Dorian "know".

Cole's entry is pretty great, you're right.. even if I'm not the biggest fan of him.
I've never disbanded the Templars though.. Thinking about that next time. Only have allied.
I can't see myself ever not conscripting either Templars or Mages. Templars because their officer corps done ****** up snuffing themselves out on red Lyrium cocaines, and the lower ranks appear totes fine fully joining the Inquisition right there in Therinfal. Mages because they made such a bad show when left to look out for themselves that anything other than keeping them under firm control simply is foolish and irresponsible.
I find it pretty hard to justify siding with the templars when they're leader basically tells you to shove it right off the bat and the mages invite you over. I mean you'd have to either be seriously prejudiced against mages or for some reason have a great deal of faith in the templars to go with Champions (I mean it could work with humans but there is just so much stacked against templars).
My immediate thought when 'Lucius' was done with his speech frankly was:
Where do I sign up?
But nah,

I tend to rp that my quizzy is just going to chat with both sides too see their stance. So head to redcliffe, shake head with viv at fiona signing up with tevinter, then go chat with the templars too see if they'll ignore the lord seeker and join and then *boom* crazy red templars attacking. Makes sense to me to go chat with both sides about whats going on, after all theres no way your char would know the lord seeker would attack.

Cassandra is absolutely my favorite then Cole.
They're my uncontested favourites as well. Even better, they end up getting along very well, despite the rocky start of Cassandra nearly spitting him on her sword when he pops up on the war table. I love the thought of her reading to him and him delighting in how her immersion in and enjoyment of the story makes it come to life in the Fade. Seeker and spirit, faith and compassion. Can't really ask for better friends and confidants to help ensure the Inquisition doesn't fall to corruption.

Ugh, Fiona, I just can't. After all the nonsense in the books about her, and then her shenanigans with the Vints, It just feels soooooo good to kill her.
Too bad you miss a mission with Cullen if you go Templars. So for my Cullen-mancing Lavellan I am pretty much forced to go mages. That's another reason why I probably won't finish that playthough. ![]()
