Considering the Devs have only stated they are "aware of the key drop issue and are working on it" tells me that we are still weeks away from an update / hot fix. I would venture to guess it will be in about a month. Somewhere in the timeframe of Feb 15th... oh wait... I forgot about Valentines Day and also the Super Bowl... nevermind it will be more like March 15th. If not before spring break then we better hope before Easter.... Devs need their vacations!
Holidays are well over, bets on # of days/weeks till patch?

instead of having the key randomly drop why not just put a chess next to the door with the key in it and voila

oversimplification here, but how some simple lines of code like:
Situation = Last enemy on level
IF: Last enemy on level takes 0 damage over period of time (say 30 sec or 1 min) [assumed that players cannot find/damage enemy]
THEN: Automatically drop key
