Tough to choose just one. Wow. 

 

I like so many of them for different reasons. After setting up the world state in the keep closest to the way I would've wanted a direct import to be, and playing through DA:I based on that world state, I'm gonna have to go with Morrigan. I absolutely loved her appearance in DA:I and how she talked about the Hero of Fereldan. It was the next best thing to actually having the Hero make an appearance. Whoever wrote Morrigan's character for DA:I, kudos and thank you.

There are so many characters I enjoy and appreciate for different reasons, but I realize I should probably take the word "favorite" seriously, otherwise I'd name them all! I think it goes without saying that the following will have massive spoilers....

 

DAO

 

Alistair. My first Dragon Age love. Sweet, endearing, loyal, funny and imperfect. He's the only one I could ever romance in DAO. Seeing him fall to his knees in the Fade in DAI broke my heart.

 

DA2

 

Aeshleah Hawke. I realize you said besides the PC characters, but I can't not put my canon Hawke here. She was a Spirit Healer who was granted her power by a Spirit of Compassion and keenly felt the weight of responsibility this power put on her. She was ultimately a kind hearted, compassionate person who tried to do right, and made mistakes and painful decisions. She was pro-Circle reform and increasingly frustrated and disappointed with her fellow mages. Seriously alarmed by the weak veil and the proliferation of blood magic, she sided with the Templars. I headcannoned that the Spirit of Compassion left her after that. I adore her. I cried my eyes out and couldn't play for days after I spoke with Varric after leaving her in the Fade. When the Hawke family theme plays and he reminisces...heavy sigh. In my canon run I will probably leave her behind, and it will still kill me. 

 

Fenris. An essentially good person who is heavily damaged. His view on magic and mages is skewed (it is telling when he blames the magisters for the rebel group in Kirkwall, Leliana dismisses it with, "there is no proof of that") and he can be a real a-hole. Fenris and Hawke loved each other, but his response to her ("wisely said") when she said to Samson, out of despair and disappointment, "mages can't be trusted"  meant the relationship, while not abusive (he trusts Hawke) wasn't perfect. But overall if he lets you in, he is loving and loyal (though still cranky, yes). He will even trust a mage, even if he doesn't trust them as a whole.

 

Varric. He's your bro. He's the one who feels most like a regular person, and I think people respond to that. I love his humor, his banter, his stories, I loved that he was a bit shady but also kind hearted, a good person. I loved his friendship with Hawke. 

 

DAI

 

I have one playthrough of this game, still need more time with it (and to try it with more fixes and content). That said my favorites so far...

 

Varric. Yes, again. Because he is Varric, even if I didn't feel connected to him in the same way (which obviously I wouldn't, since I'm playing a different person). He's changed in ways, but is still the same.

 

Morrigan. This one surprised me. I was moved by her pleas for her son. I was intrigued by her insistence that Kieran not have the life she had, isolated and removed from society (if I recall correctly, she seemed to appreciate this in DAO, at least outwardly). Some real nice character development there.

 

Solas. He is....very interesting. I'm intrigued to get to know him in....other ways.

 

Cullen. While not super attached to him, he's an interesting character, having seen the worst side of both mages and templars. I was hoping this part of him might have been fleshed out more beyond a single conversation, but the real focus of his characterization was coming off lyrium, which was great. I liked his initial awkwardness in the romance too, reminded me of Alistair. I hope to feel more connected to his character in subsequent playthroughs.

 

Honorable mentions:

 

Leliana. Though I can't say she is a favorite, her sacrifice in In Hushed Whispers is my absolute favorite scene across all three installments in the series. Absolute perfection.

 

Loghain. Though he is dead in my game, reading The Stolen Throne and hearing Threnn and Solas' interpretation of the Battle at Ostagar gave his character a lot more nuance. I really liked him in The Stolen Throne, actually. Almost makes me wish he was still alive.

1. Dorian- a male LI who exclusively prefers men and doesn't feel like the token promiscus male rogue that clearly likes women but happens to be there for men too. Good looking, adorable moments and a blatant nerd what more could a guy ask for?

2. Iron Bull- refreshing take on the qunari. A mercenary who you'd assume would be amoral and casual yet very deeply caring and a heart of gold.

3. Fenris- yes he's emoish and can be quite abrasive but at least he owns up to his ways and is more than willing to disagree. He also shows (most) others a begrudging respect. And he's cute #thereisaidit

4. Aveline- my favorite female companion thus far. She has a bit of humor and has a big sister complex. Plus she asks how YOU are. Refreshing to get a companion that cares for someone other than themself.

5. Isabella- Quite the sense of humor. Love her character. Had a surprisingly deep rivalry LI arc (I think I'm falling for you Hawke...the feels!).

Alistair wins the top spot for me, pulling into the lead with how he talks about the HoF in DA:I. Shale and Anders tie for second with Cullen and Solas close thirds.
