Whenever I tried to include Bull with a dual-wield, even with Cass and Blackwell, we would all end up dying. As soon as I switched him to s + s, no problems.

Uh SnS warrior is VERY strong pre-skyhold. Easy guard generation, decent damage, easy access to passives to make tanky.....yeah.
i was talking in sheer DPS
Very little makes a SnS sit down.
especially after a spec D:

There are guides for 2H Warriors that say they are pretty Tanky even with the W&S Tree. There are a lot of Mobility and Guard Skills that you can use to make your build sturdy.
It might involve high investments into the Vanguard Tree but it's worth the trial. You can always experiment a pay a small amount to re-spec.
Most of the builds recommend getting the upgraded version of War Cry, which adds a decent Armor Buff.
A point to Challenge would get you Trust The Steel. (Using Challenge is optional of course.)
I have read that Unbowed is pretty worthwhile as well. But the argument being it's too deep within Vanguard Tree. I would suppose this is a more practical route than going through all the Shield Skills that you wouldn't really use.
At Human Level 15 (17 Skill Points), with no Specializations, I would probably go with:
Two-Hand Skills (6 Skills): Upgraded Mighty Blow, Upgraded Pommel Strike, Block and Slash, Flow of Battle
Battle Master (4 Skills): Grappling Chain, Crippling Blows, Upgraded Combat Roll
Vanguard (7 Skills): Upgraded War Cry, Upgrade Charging Bull, It Will Cost You, Upgraded Unbowed.
A playthrough usually ends at around Level 23, so you have like 8 More Skills to play around with. (Plus any bonus abilities from whatever. So far I haven't gotten any skill points from quests for my Inky.)
I would treat this kind of Warrior as a Flanker. Would probably play War Cry warily, not for the Guard Generation but for the Armor Buff. Two to Three Melee combatants taunted may still be manageable with the use of Combat Roll and Charging Bull + Mighty Blow.
Use terrain to your advantage. Avoiding Line of Sight is not a petty tactic, use to your advantage.

What I am having trouble with is working the new spec tree into my 15 available points (Lv 13). It's just not enough points yet I feel to respec. I might just wait longer to respec. I do like Pommel Strike. I use the associated ring too for 30% extra damage. On level 13 with a decent axe that move hits for 700-800 damage.

Has anyone felt that the 2H warrior pre-skyhold was a little bit weak? I was really psyched to play a brute after my rougue playthrough but I find myself switching from 2H to S&S just to keep my guy alive even though I'm speced for 2H.
The class it set up to use stuns to mitigate enemy damage, but it draws aggro to fast due to its high damage. Unfortunately, that damage isn't enough to make up for its propensity to die.
I've seen a lot of great 2H specs that don't follow the 2H tree and am considering trying one out/making one up. Just looking to see if anyone else had the same experience.
Also, if anyone has any experience with a 2-handed templar I'd be happy to hear about it.
Thanks!
I am still pre Skyhold (Just got the Templars to join...) also and I admit that I did want to switch to a Sword and Board too (because of the bugged Mighty Blow partially...) but after switching and tanking for a bit I switched back mainly because of the AOE that you get as a 2 hander plus I can use charging bull to knock down archers and mages and then plummet them with a maul (yeah I know that there is no aoe on mauls but still its really fun mashing stuff like nugs for sandwiches...).
2 handers in the beginning are not for damage but control (knock down multiple enemies and mighty blow/earthshake them...) even though the Shield Master race has more guard and knockdown it is only for single targets.
Might blow, charging bull and block and slash counter can and will clear out a room by simultaneously knocking down multiple targets.
If you want Guard then use the upgrade to Block and Slash or use War Cry near the end of a battle or if you want to Block and Slash multiple opponents at once.
Use combat roll and the scenery to avoid projectiles and the upgrade to the roll will keep terrors from dry humping you all day the chain pull and kick will setup mighty blow also.
If you want your 2 hander to be more tank like then pick up the weapon and shield passives turn the bolt and turn the blade to reduce the damage your 2 hander will take...
Earthshaker's upgrade is also bugged and will do massive damage to anyone stupid enough to stand in the fire and complain that it is hot.

This might be useful for anyone feeling underwhelmed with 2h warrior. You can significantly increase your attack speed by animation cancelling. In SP use the search button, in MP use the sprint button.
Aha! The DA:I version of the Dragon age Origins 2 hander animation cancel now the 2 handers DPS just got that much better thank you soo much kind sir!

I am finding that the Grappling Chain (Upgraded where you get a knockdown after) and some of the passives where you deal more damage to knocked down enemies + Upgraded Mighty Blow is my go to move. It crushes people. Pommel Strike (with Enhanced Ring Equipped) does really well too. I've just accepted that Warriors don't do tons of Single damage ala Rogue or Mage, but if you build with the right passives for situational damage bonus, get a good Weapon. You can do fine. Also I am going Champion. Probably only one side to start....as I get more points to play with I will probably change it up some. It's good to be Champion.

Sadly this is the case ho ever designed 2 handed warriors this time really screwed us over. Low damage with only situational spike. Then reaver being a monk specialization, dragon claws is a terrible idea. No berserker, Broken detonators, bugged abilities like blessed blades actually blessing the ground and doing nothing, dragon rage taking 5% hp instead of the 2% the tooltip says. W&S skills doing more damage that 2 handed skills, equal tier 1 handed payback strike does 400% damage every 8 sec on a target, while mighty blow does 200% damage every 16 seconds. Meaning equal level weapon a payback strike will out damage and out dps a mighty blow.
This is how sad the 2 handed warrior is this time.

^ Yeah Shield Bash is powerful too for S&S. Do you think they will fix it 2H for us? I love being a 2HW. It's really the only class I want to play.

Maybe there is something we are missing with Whirlwind? Gotta be something we can do. Surely it's not hopeless.

Nope ive tested it all out, this is my second 2 handed build. First was a reaver who i found to be a poor mans assassin. If someone wants to play a reaver they are betetr served by playing a dw assassin as not only will you have a lot better damage, your aoe daggers do the cleaving part, you also have better survivability.
Im also quite sure im not the only one who finds 2 handed tree pretty terrible this time around. Oh regarding whirlwing, it takes you 4 swings to start out damaging your basic auto attacks, while a rogue also has a similiar skill spinning blades which with the right passives does 675% damage in a span of 2 seconds and will refund its entire stamina use and is also an AOE. Guess what on rogues it is considered a weaker skill. This is how sad the 2 handed warrior is this time around that even a rogues weaker skill completely shits our mains.

People sweat Rogues. That's why they made it so OP. I played a really good Archer in DA:O, and really liked that Char. If I do another Playthrough it will be as an Archer of some type. I am gonna try to enjoy my Situational Damage 2HW Tank Champion this time around.

Wait, isn't the 2 hander whirlwind supposed to be a detonator ability?
Plus, Earthshaker upgrade aoe damage is bugged in a good way right?

I would suggest a high crit chance 2H champion build. There are two abilities that work great using this build. Flow of battle passive in 2h tree and siege breaker upgrade for walking fortress. Flow of battle reduces CD with crits, and siege breaker reduces CD on being hit (with walking fortress up). Together and with enough crit chance you can reduce your CD to be able to cast walking fortress very soon after the duration ends, and in some cases i have been able to just immediately cast it again after whirlwinding on a particularly dense pack of mobs.
My current gear setup has my crit at 81% and my crit damage at 117%. I also run hidden blades proc on both weapon and armor (the 5 hit and the 4 hit respectively)
Also, to the death is great for single target. just roll around, block, and turtle until it stacks really high then pop walking fortress and whirlwind on top of your enemy for hilariously huge crit numbers. i was taking down giants, behemoths, etc using this tactic.
in order to reach high crit, make sure you farm as much bear hide and giant bear hide as possible and craft these two items
Sturdy Prowler Armor (canyon merchant hissing wastes)
Ornate Battleaxe (random T3 schematic)
The armor has leather utility slots to raise cunning/dex (use snowfleur hide to bypass class restrictions)
the weapon has leather offense slot to raise crit chance
the mask of the grand duchess helps
+10 cunning necklace
rings of crit damage
HOORAY CRITICALS!!

I just feel so wrong using hidden blades on warrior, consider it my own RP limitation as i avoid using those enchants. Personal rules.

I can see the argument that 2H is underwhelming being somewhat valid. My crit centric build that uses hidden blade procs is more of a testament to crafting rather than the 2H skills themselves. The only really great synergy that I take advantage of playing 2H as a champion is flow of battle reducing the CD on walking fortress. I have gotten hilariously high mighty blow crits on dragons and bosses using to the death. Also, when a dragon does its wing buffet self root thing, if you have to the death stacked high you can whirlwind for insane numbers due to the passive that increases damage per swing.
