I've already lost against one dragon on nightmare,
but now I am already level 17 and wondering which one might be the weakest, for starters.
Western approach? Hinterlands?

Crestwood.
Not sure if it's the weakest in terms of level, but it's the easiest fight of the bunch.
I'd say Crestwood or Western Approach. The Western Approach one puts guard on herself, but the Crestwood one has the "static cage, sort of" move which can catch you off-guard, so they're about even in terms of difficulty.
Crestwood Dragon doesn't require as much work in order to 'spawn' her, though.
I beat the Western Approach dragon on my first play through, and agree with your assessment on her difficulty.
However, the hassle of getting her to spawn - via a tedious, seemingly never ending side quest - just makes it more trouble than it's worth.
Never bothered fighting her again after that first time. If you want the achievement though, go for it.
At level 17 you should be able to just roll over the Hinterland's dragon on Nightmare. I rolled over it at 14 without any problems. The adds are no problem at all really. They're only like level 10-11 and you can fight them by themselves without mama roasting you by just staying underneath her perch and waiting for them to come to you.
Crestwood. It's a "mmo-y" fight because of the static cages, but it doesn't do much damage if you can avoid the electricity rings. Hinterlands is way harder due to its fireballs and adds. Western Approach takes too much time to "summon".
For me, the weakest would be the dragon near Redcliffe or the dragon in the Western Approach
Yeah, Crestwood and western approach are the easier ones. I usually begin with western approach while in the meantime farming the still ruins. One quest, one run on still ruins (good crafting materials) then when I got the war table mission, I launch it, craft some gear with harvested schematics/materials, and go back crush the dragon.
the still ruins.
I love that place. The quest is great and I always seem to find at least one teir 3 schematic.

What do those rings do, exactly?
rings are centered on each party member. when a ring belonging to character A overlaps character B, (and therefore vice versa) then both characters get shocked periodically for lightning damage.
You can also dispel the rings with spell purge, dispel, and any ability that clears negative effects.
I also get a kick out of table top strategy game staples being considered "MMO-y." *sigh* I feel old now.
Western Approach was easiest to me. Crestwood was a close second.
Hinterland was hard because of dragonlings, the fire soaked run to get to her and she flies up and flames you from afar.
I've found that mounting up and sprinting through the Lady Shayna's Valley straight up to her works the best, you will sometimes get nailed by a fireball off your horse, but if you weave a bit you can usually ride all the way up to the the valley where the fight actually takes place.

its not hard if u attack with mage from long distance (& if dragon has weakness to ice use ice mage), from certain range he wont attack u, maybe it a bug, or just something that Dev's did not think about, only place u cant do that is map with 3 dragons, forgot the area name, but if small HP remains to dragon u need to go closer, to far can result with no drop, finish it with normal fight

That sounds incredibly boring, I'd rather just use bee grenades.

it took me i think 15Min, did not take time, its how it felt, but yes its still boring, i put something enough heavy on mouse so my char would auto attack, no spells only staff so it took 30Min, but i watched TV that time ![]()

Bleh, I don't have time for that. Bee grenades make it two and a half minutes, tops. ![]()

just like in Witcher 2, made my life hard with not using some stuff, cause thinking, they will be useless any way + a bit lazy to make them
(it was in the beginning like that), that maybe one reason dragons are so hard to beat, but second reason is, Ai is dumb, companions ignore stand ground command
, if u don't change behavior awry time u starts dragon fight, commands should overwrite how behavior is set, at first they don't ignore but when i start attack solo then & when i change target then they will do soon, change to my target, & when Dragonlings get close to my mage, mage tries to continue attacking Dragon & when he has gotten a lot of damage then he starts to attack the Dragonling attacking him, but he should get away first & then continue attacking (example use fade step), vivien is only one that i have seen use fade step once or twice, & solas never, & even when she use it she gets away from her attacker just to get near new enemy that starts to attack her, my point Ai needs to be a bit smarter, but i guess bombs would make my life a bit easier

That's why you solo them. I swear, fighting dragons is easier (at least on nightmare) when your party is dead or you don't even take them.
I do Crestwood, WA, Hinterlands, SC, then EDL Dragons - EDL ones are the worst of the lot.
