How many companions do we need to finish the game?

Here's the thought experiment: If you want them to lower the number of available companions to the total that can be in a party, imagine those companions being comprised of your most hated ones. Would you enjoy the game? Would you even play more than a a few hours of it?
You are given the ability to recruit nine companions because not everyone likes the same party members. Some people enjoy Sera, some find her annoying. The former would love having a DA game in which you're required to have her in the party all the time, the latter would probably ask for a refund. The same can be said about every companion. Just because one player enjoys sticking with a party of Cassandra, Sera, and Vivienne, doesn't mean everyone wants to use those characters...
As for your question, you're required to have zero companions to complete the game(even if the three you obtain in the prologue will never leave the Inquisition before the end of the game). Yes, for companion quests, you are required to use the companion that the quest is for. But for the story in general? You aren't required to take anyone. And that's there both for people who like a challenge, as well as for those who hate every available companion in the game...

Hey, I wouldn't mind having Vivienne or Sera in my party at all times... provided they are tightly gagged and don't do anything without my permission.

I think six is better than nine, yes. Or maybe I just see multiple dialogues and scenes with Cassandra that I enjoy immensely, and wish other characters had this amount of interaction.
I mean, what do we see for Vivienne? Talks about fashion and then there's a random guy who dies. It should've been a breathtaking scene, yet I am just a passive watcher, because I knew almost nothing about her love life prior to the very end.
Or Blackwall? "Wardens are great, Wardens are great, oops... spoiler. But Wardens are great."
We don't get to care about these characters at all. Though granted, it may not be the amount the dialogue, but the quality: Cole's personal quest is short, too, and so is Bull's, but we get to care about those characters a great deal.
Maybe twelve people is just a bit too much. (Then again, if they gave us the same amount of fetch quests and only six people to talk to in between, I might well go mad). Maybe one villain to romance, one good advisor to romance, and six companions, four of them romanceable? Or something like that.

I absolutely would, because those few companions that would be left would be _major_ companions written by the game's _best_ writers. In each of DA games, I played with the main cast, anyway: Alistair-Morrigan-Shale(Zevran), all written by David Gaider, then Anders-Aveline(Carver)-Varric(your starting party), then Cassandra-Solas-Varric.

Interesting examples. Let's see, in order... DAO: Hated-loved-hated(okay with)... DA2: hated-okay with(okay with)-hated. DAI: okay-loved-hated... I probably wouldn't have even played DAI because DAO and DA2 would have been atrocious and not worth playing. There's a reason I specified "most hated" companions...
As I said, it's all a matter of personal preference. And if more people were to feel the same as I do, the games wouldn't sell... Whereas another 6 companions can be added, and Bioware can ensure that just about everyone has a party combination that they may enjoy.

... well, since you loved Morrigan AND Solas, I have to concede your point.
It's hard to get past the selfishness, though, since "not my kind of character" very often equals "bland writing" for me. Which means that I look at Oghren/Leliana/Wynne and start wailing: "But it's boring! They're just wallpaper! And it's three whole characters! And here we go again with Isabela for DA2 and Blackwall for DAI, they're horrible!" I guess I have to sigh and say "well, at least only one character per game now feels ruined, and not three, and it's only one romance out of four" and respect that someone might've even liked Jacob in ME.
