I agree. I know that Leliana was never all butterflies and roses and kittens because she was a bard who killed people as part of her job but she also had a soft side and cared about people. The hardened Leliana seems to have lost all personality...like she's not a person anymore.
I can't bear to harden Leliana. Didn't in DAO, won't in DAI. Just not the way I roll. Also, sparing Natalie seems more pragmatic to me. Show that Grand Cleric she's not the threat she thinks she is. "She has a choice...the Inquisition is coming." I agree the hardened version seems a bit unnatural, especially killing Natalie - it seems so unnecessary to me.
Ugh I do NOT like hardened Leliana and it's frustratingly difficult to soften her. First two playthroughs thought I did everything right but she was still hardened. GRRR! Seems like Bioware really loves that version of her. Doesn't do it for me, personally.
She starts hardened. You have to soften her. This should be called "to soften or not to soften Leliana".

Really? I didn't have any difficulty. Did you prevent Leliana from killing the traitor agent and did you tell the Inquisition's people aren't expendable? (If there is anything else that factors in I can't remember at the moment, aside from Calpernia's quest, which is only possible if you go with the Templars).
It depends on if you want Leliana to be your weapon and what she is at the moment, or if you want to take her out of your arsenal and encourage her to become what she once tried to be again. I think it's worth noting that Justinia felt guilt over what she'd done to Leliana. Whether you think that guilt deserved or pointless sentiment is up to you.

Watch the wartable, too. You don't want her cutting out bard's tongues or letting people think the inquisition will assassinate them, either.
hardened, then stay on her good side but not make her divine.

First two playthroughs I didn't even get that traitor conversation - I didn't talk to her much in Haven... who knew it'd have such an impact for the rest of the game!!
This time I'm determined to get it right... lol.

Ah yes, thank you, I knew I was forgetting something! I never let her do anything like that, ick.

Yesssssssssss, talk to her in Haven! Talk her ear off and don't let her do anything crazy on the war table. I wish you luck, I'd never want to accidentally get a hardened Leliana.
Thirded. She freaks the living hell out of me, especially if she ends up as Divine. Honestly, my dead Warden wouldn't even recognize this woman anymore. Leliana became everything that her friend and lover thought she wanted to forever leave behind, it's like Marjolaine won in the end.
Oh man I have to keep an eye on war table missions too?
Crap...
Adored the hardened version, so that for me everyday. What a great divine she makes.
I hardened her in my playthrough. It didn't fit her character of DA:O, but it certainly fit her character in DA:I. She's already hardend when you first meet her in DA:I imo.
I harden her every time in DA:O and in this game.
I just prefer her that way.
For some reason me too.Idk I guess I always play evil characters and I'm always evil Inquisitor so I guess this is why I prefer her hardened xD

It's not so difficult, it is kinda obvious really. Don't let her remove tongues or poison people or whatever. If her approach to the mission makes you go "ick" go with Josephine or Cullen. If you think her approach is more noble (I liked her environmental approach to the Varghests in the Western Approach...although unfortunately it didn't turn out so great for my soldiers) then go that way.
Butler deserved it tho, not my fault if she goes all princess stabbity and loses her ability to put down the murder knife after that one decision among the countless people she and the inquisitor have killed before.
Point of clarification: Who's Butler? The spy she thinks turned traitor in Haven?
Cole's mind-probing dialogue about it implies hardened Leliana is actually pretty traumatized, with violent nightmares as compared to unhardened who he reads 'Can sing again' so...yeah, never gonna harden her this game.
Add that to the fact that my canon Warden romanced her, and the letter I got from her was begging my Inquisitor to guide her back into the light. Hell no if I'm gonna disappoint her.
Don't think it implies that at all.
