Early in the game, Solas gives you his first personal quest: “Measuring the Veil”. It guides you to an old elven ruin in the Hinterlands and activating it, according to him, strengthens the veil in the immediate area.

After you activate 10 of these artifacts scattered throughout Orlais and Ferelden, a new quest titled “What Lies Dormant” becomes available via a War Table operation.

Additionally, these artifacts are a good way to raise Solas’s approval of you and gain experience points. However, these aren’t marked on your maps anywhere and can be pretty easy to miss (often, your only warning is having Solas in the party and hearing him say that he senses one nearby, usually when you’re almost on top of it). In the Solas Thread, Nyaore posted map scans from the strategy guide, but that proved… a bit inaccurate, for I stumbled upon many others that the strategy guide basically said did not exist.

So, I went on a quest to discover and catalog every artifact for others to easily find. I’m fairly certain I have located every one in the game, but if I missed one, please alert me so I can scout it out and add it here. Current total count is 24.

In each photo, I tried standing close to the artifact so that my locational arrow is as accurate on the maps as possible. Please note that in order to get to some of these, some quests or War Table operations need to occur first. Thus, there may be spoilers for you in my discussions on how to reach some of these (but nothing that spoils any major storylines). You have been warned.

Now, without further ado…

The Hinterlands (Total Count = 3)

Artifact # 1:
The first one is super easy, since you get a quest marker for it and everything. It is just northeast of the Crossroads. Do note that until you activate this first quest artifact, no others you might find beforehand will be able to be interacted with and, thus, can’t be activated.

It was right near where that pile of skulls is on the right (for some reason, it disappears after you activate it and leave the area… none of the others do this).

Artifact # 2:
This one is upstairs in Lornan's Exile. To get to it, enter Lornan's Exile, then turn right. It's at the top of that tower, so you'll climb up two sets of ladders and it is on the balcony outside:

Artifact # 3:
This one is hiding in plain sight inside an abandoned farmhouse near Master Dennet the Horsemaster's farm.

Here is a picture of the house on the left with Master Dennet's farm on the right in the background, to give you a better idea of which house.

The Storm Coast (Total Count = 2)

Artifact # 1:
This first one is in the far south of the map, inside a cave hidden behind a waterfall. I actually went here first in my screenshot-grabbing adventures, so I marked it (rather inefficiently) with a waypoint toggle on the bigger map. On the zoomed in one, I got smart and just stood by the darn thing, so my actual arrow is as accurate as I can get you.

artifact_storm_coast_3.jpg

artifact_storm_coast_1.jpg

Artifact # 2:
The last one in the Storm Coast is in an area that is inaccessible until you complete a certain War Table operation. After I captured Griffon Wing Keep in the Western Approach, I got a notification of a new War Table operation that had become available. The title was "Red Lyrium Templar Outpost in the Storm Coast". Once you complete that operation, the dwarven thaig that you couldn't enter before becomes accessible.

artifact_second_storm_coast_2.jpg

artifact_second_storm_coast_3.jpg

This one is tricky. It's stuck behind a big door that cannot be opened without a Red Templar Key.

artifact_second_storm_coast_4.jpg

You can go around the other side of this area and Solas will sense the artifact there, but you are blocked by a broken bridge which apparently cannot be energized by a mage to be fixed or anything. I was pretty sure I did not pick up a key when I fought the final Templars in the area, so I tore my hair out for a little bit. Then, I backtracked the whole dungeon and found the key on a random corpse I'd somehow missed near the beginning. Moral of the Story: CAREFULLY CHECK ALL CORPSE LOOTS. Once you have the key, you open the door and there it is.

The Fallow Mire (Total Count = 1)

Artifact # 1:
This one is a little tricky to get to. Stumbling into The Den isn't so bad - you've a Fade Rift there to guide you - but the actual artifact is in an apostate camp. When in The Den, you have two different passages along the right-hand wall (I say this as right-hand as you enter The Den from the Veilfire Tower area). The SECOND passage in the wall is the one you want. Go in, turn right, walk through the water and you're in the apostate's camp:

artifact_fallow_mire_2.jpg

artifact_fallow_mire_1.jpg

Exalted Plains (Total Count = 1)

Artifact # 1:
You can only access it after you have opened the passage to Ghilan'nain's Grove, which is a War Table operation after you've discovered the blocked passage. Once inside and heading towards the passageway on the right, the first left turn is the most direct path (the second left turn takes you to an underground area called The Dead Hand with a puzzle). Work your way through the swampy area keeping to the left. You'll find the artifact at the foot of a bridge leading to the Offering to the Dread Wolf shrine. There is a high dragon here, but she will not attack you. She'll fly overhead and bluster roars at you, then go land off to the right. She never bothered me until I walked right up to her, so she won't bother you at Fen'Harel's shrine:

artifact_exalted_plains_1.jpg

artifact_exalted_plains_3.jpg

Lost Temple of Dirthamen (Total Count = 1)

Artifact # 1:
This location does not appear on your map until you resolve a quest. I was in the Exalted Plains... received a quest from the Dalish looking for a lost member... found his body and a note saying he was trying to reach the Shrine of Sylaise, and so I went there. Inside is a glyph you can reveal with veilfire and spark a quest to find 3-4 other glyphs in the Plains. Did that, then got a War Table operation to have someone decipher the glyphs I'd collected. When that was done, the Lost Temple of Dirthamen appeared on my world map.

EDIT: Updated the OP to reflect that the formerly bugged quest has now been addressed by the latest patch and works.

Crestwood (Total Count = 3)

Special Note: All three can only be found once you've drained the lake.

Artifact # 1:
The first one is beside a house on the Flats. There is a Fade Rift you close up nearby, so pretty easy to find thanks to that quest marker (mine's gone because I closed the Rift first):

artifact_first_crestwood_2.jpg

artifact_first_crestwood_1.jpg

Artifact # 2:
The next one is located in Old Crestwood, which had, until recently, been buried under flooded waters. It's next to a house as well, right on the edge of the receded lake:

artifact_second_crestwood_2.jpg

artifact_second_crestwod_1.jpg

Artifact # 3:
The third artifact is located on the very bottom level of the Flooded Cave dungeon. That third level is also where the main Fade Rift for the quest "Still Waters" is, so again, makes it easy to find. On the third level, you come to a juncture. To the left is a room with the Rift; to the right is a big room you pass through on your way to the exit... so, close the Rift first. Then, when going to the right to exit, you enter that large room. Head all the way to the left and you'll see the artifact on a table against the far wall:

artifact_third_crestwood_1.jpg

The Western Approach (Total Count = 3)

Artifact # 1:
The first one can be found in The Still Ruins after you've gone through and cleared out the quest in there.

artifact_first_western_approach_1.jpg

artifact_first_western_approach_2.jpg

artifact_first_western_approach_3.jpg

Artifact # 2:
The second one is inside of Griffon Wing Keep, which is filled with Venatori that you can clear out and turn into an Inquisition Keep. It’s on the second level near the main gate entrance.

artifact_second_western_approach_2.jpg

artifact_second_western_approach_3.jpg

Artifact # 3:
This one can only be obtained after you solve all three Astrarium puzzles. Once that is done, a cave will open up near one of the camps just south of Griffon Wing Keep.

artifact_third_western_approach_1.jpg

artifact_third_western_approach_2.jpg

And here is an overall map showing the locations of the three Astrariums, which are the circular icons with a white diamond inside them. They are all largely in the northern areas of the map.

artifact_third_western_approach_3.jpg

The Emerald Graves (Total Count = 4)

Artifact # 1:
Completely randomly stumbled upon it! There is a Fade Rift in this area that you go to close and I saw it sitting there in the background:

artifact_first_graves_1.jpg

artifact_first_graves_2.jpg

artifact_first_graves_3.jpg

Artifact # 2:
I also literally stumbled onto this one while running away from Giants. LOL Fair warning that this northern area of the Graves is Giant territory – they are EVERYWHERE.

artifact_second_graves_1.jpg

artifact_second_graves_2.jpg

artifact_second_graves_3.jpg

Artifact # 3:
This one is hidden inside of an old, abandoned chateau (Chateau d’Onterre) in the northeast area of the Graves, i.e. Giant Territory. Again, randomly stumbled on it – there are no quests sending you here, really – and the whole mansion has a neat quest inside of it. While exploring, the artifact is in a side room off of the ballroom area.

artifact_third_graves_1.jpg

Here’s a view of the sideroom from the ballroom.

artifact_third_graves_4.jpg

artifact_third_graves_2.jpg

artifact_third_graves_3.jpg

Artifact # 4:
This one is inaccessible until you complete both “Here Lies The Abyss” and “Wicked Eyes and Wicked Hearts”. Once both those main quests are completed, you can get a War Table operation after exploring the Emerald Graves to unlock The Knights’ Tomb, Din’an Hanin. Once unlocked, you’ll be able to find it with the quest marker, but it’s also up in the northern area of the Graves with all the Giants running around (of course it is). The artifact is located on the third level down, in a side room near the dungeon exit. This side room is only accessible in one of two ways – a locked door (so, bring a rogue…) or smashing a wall (… or bring a warrior).

Exterior of the Tomb itself, for reference.

Emprise du Lion (Total Count = 2)

Artifact # 1:
A Fade Rift marker will bring you to this general area. There is a tower there called Drakon’s Tower and on the opposite side of that, tucked quietly away, is an artifact.

artifact_second_lion_1.jpg

artifact_second_lion_2.jpg

artifact_second_lion_3.jpg

Artifact # 2:
Okay. This artifact. THIS F**KING ARTIFACT. I wanted to turn around and slap Solas hard for this one. I will not sugar-coat it: it is a bag of dicks real challenge to get to. First, a War Table operation to complete the busted Judicael Bridge, which opens up this island area where three dragons live. They all keep to themselves in these old Roman Coliseum-looking buildings.

artifact_first_lion_1.jpg

artifact_first_lion_2.jpg

The second Coliseum – the one in the “middle”, so to speak – contains a high-level high dragon, an Ocularum, and an elven artifact. The dragon and Ocularum are easy enough to find: both are at the top of the structure. I recommend bringing your best dragon wrecking crew for this one. Maaaaaybe you can run past the dragon and drop down to the point needed to access the artifact, but life is probably easier if you just kill the damned thing.

Afterwards, finding the artifact was really fun, since someone decided to put it on a seemingly inaccessible level of the fighting ring. Here, precisely.

artifact_first_lion_5.jpg

artifact_first_lion_4.jpg

How to get up there? Well, you see this rock formation right here?

artifact_first_lion_6.jpg

You gotta get on top of that to hop over to the artifact. However, you can’t get onto the rock from the ground… it’s too high to scale. That means you have to go to the top of the ring – yeah, where that dragon hangs out – and drop down onto the rock ledge. Here is the view from upstairs to show where you’re dropping down to.

artifact_first_lion_3.jpg

Hissing Wastes (Total Count = 2)

Artifact # 1:
This one is located down inside one of the dwarven ruins scattered throughout the map. This particular ruin is up on top of the eastern mountain range. It's easiest to find if you establish the camp that's nearby it, so you have a quest marker to get you close. You'll note the tomb entrance is blocked by an avalanche, so the only way is to get at it from above. From the camp, follow the Tevinter banners up a faint mountain path and curve toward the right. You'll see their excavation site. Clear them out, then climb down into the ruin. Once inside, there's another set of ladders and scaffolding taking you further down. At the bottom of those is one of the artifacts, fallen on its side.

artifact_first_wastes_1.jpg

artifact_first_wastes_2.jpg

artifact_first_wastes_3.jpg

artifact_first_wastes_4.jpg

Artifact # 2:
The next one is at the bottom of the mountain range, up north. There is a quest marker leading you to the general area to clear out more Venatori and establish a camp. Continuing north, you'll go down a series of scaffolding and ladders. The artifact is in front of a caved-in ruin door at the bottom of the ladder pathway.

artifact_second_wastes_1.jpg

artifact_second_wastes_2.jpg

artifact_second_wastes_3.jpg

Forbidden Oasis (Total Count = 2)

Artifact # 1:
This place is a jungle gym, so get ready to jump creatively. The starting camp basically leads you straight to your first Ocularum in the area. While looking around through it, you can actually spot one of the artifacts off towards the right on top of some ruins. If you follow the map along the right-hand side, it should take you close. Once in visual range, it's just a matter of getting to the two sets of ladders that take you up to it.

artifact_first_oasis_1.jpg

artifact_first_oasis_2.jpg

artifact_first_oasis_3.jpg

Artifact # 2:
The last one is actually inside of the Solasan Temple. However, don't panic if you're not an avid Shard collector... you don't need ALL of them to get to the artifact itself. You just need to collect six Shards (which should be the amount that triggers the quest for unlocking and exploring The Forbidden Oasis zone) to open the initial door leading inside. Once done, take either the left or right path down the stairs (they lead to the same place). Looking ahead is a wall with three doors in a row all requiring Shards. If you turn around and face back the way you came, THAT wall harbors the artifact.

Giving this thread one little bump since the formerly bugged quest regarding activating 10 of these has now been addressed in the latest patch and works.

I edited the OP to reflect this.

Thank you for this guide, only needed one your second artifact on the emerald grave, i mean seriously, i was on the other side of the river where you find some dead guy investigating the rifts, when solas said i sense on of the artifacts of my people........naturally i searched around the rock he was, following the river, then on the other side of the riverbed, nothing, i spent 20 minutes just doing this while being sidetracked by the ever spawning bears. i would never figure it was on the giants domain. jeesus solas, why don't you at least say its warm or cold like a normal person !!!

Haha, yes, he can sometimes not be very helpful with their locations. The one by the dragon in Emprise du Lion had me scratching my head for a while because he said he sensed it nearby, but I wasn't thinking "look up".

It's like a game of Marco Polo, only after you shout "Marco!", the artifact stays silent instead of answering with "Polo!" to give you a locational cue. :P

I did the quest "What Lies Dormant" in the war table after enough of the elven artifacts have been activated and dealt with the rift in the cave in the Hinterlands.

I brought Solas to close it and nothing. What was the point of that? I didn't get anything special unless I missed something. I also think I have max approval Solas so I didn't even get any Solas approves pop up.
