Just a note that I am romancing Blackwall and would prefer to pick which gains approval from him.

Not sure it matters from a Blackwall perspective. Varric will care though.

Blackwall only cares if you exile the Wardens or not. I personally don't see much reason to let Stroud live considering it breaks Varric's heart. If the Wardens want to survive so much then they can pick another Warden to be in charge, and he was going to go on his Calling soon anyway while Hawke technically had a longer lifespan left in him.

Who is Stroud? Oh ... THAT guy with the moustache?
So...who to leave behind? A former incarnation of my player-character, the hero of Kirkwall and friend to Varric or ... that guy?
decisions, decisions ...
Bye that guy!!! Have fun in the fade!

Does anyone even like Stroud? Other than because of the awesome moustache.
It's not that I don't like him, it's that I don't KNOW him very well. In both DA II and DA:I don't tell me anything about him other than he's "good a Grey Warden" which can mean many things. So it's hard for me like or dislike towards him, I'm just indifferent towards Stroud. Don't know enough to hate or like him. He's just there so I can save Hawke over him.
Now if you really want a hard choice try this: Hawke or Allistair.
Now to get this go to keep have Allistair stay in Wardens and don't have killed or become a drunk, then he takes Stroud's place and if you want more heartache ally with the mages so you have Fiona there too, Now that is as hard of a choice and is right up there with choosing between Ash or Kaiden in ME1.

decisions, decisions ... BYE ASH! Nice knowing you ... NOT! Every single time ...
never got it why this Virmire thing was supposed to be some kind of big deal...and I also can't remember Shep being that heartbroken about this "meaningful" choice ever after much anyway ...

Oh well, I'm hoping for a DLC that allows us to venture into the fade with past LI (Isabella) to bring him back. :-D

All I know about Stroud is his stache. I mean, he's not exactly got a lot of lines or depth. Just stache.

Considering it spoils in the dialog that they're not going to die I don't think it matters. It says "X will likely die" that coupled with them "dying" off screen basically confirms them not being dead.

Uh. So I saw this video of Varric's reaction if you leave Hawke and....my God I am never leaving Hawke. Ever.
Ik, just the way he says "Where's Hawke?" completely breaks my heart. On one hand, I kind of want to have a playthrough where I let one of the Wardens live... but I don't think I could ever actually do so, outside of building a worldstate in the Keep. I did really enjoy the story he tells about Hawke afterwards, though. But yeah, no way I can bring myself to actually make that choice...
Maaaaybe if I play an #Assquisitor and kick Varric out of the party before doing the quest... but that's a big "if".

I hate leaving anyone. Stroud seems to be a decent enough guy. But between Hawke or him I would leave Stroud even though that leaves no senior warden.

I'd most likely leave Stroud behind, but since my decisions will always involve Alistair or Loghain, I'll take either of those over Hawke.

Fiona? The leader of the mage rebellion? How the hell does she get into the Fade? My Fiona was glued to the library in Skyhold and yes, I allied with the mages.

Yup! I never wanted Ashley on board the Normandy in the first place but couldn't get rid of her until someone gave me a bomb...

To suffer less, you got to headcanon it and do the same choice every. single. time. Like that character is already dead.
I love Loghain. I don't dislike Ashley. But that's it. Come Virmire, come the Fade - I click the button at the end of the quest, and they're gone. As if I had no choice at all.
Less painful that way.
(though, okay, okay, I dislike Ashley! And it WOULD be easier, were it Stroud and not Loghain.)

Choosing between Hawke and Alistair was agonizing. In the end, I realized I am still a little jealous of the crush my wife had on Alistair when we played DA:O, so he had to go. Not sure I could do it again.
