Considering it spoils in the dialog that they're not going to die I don't think it matters. It says "X will likely die" that coupled with them "dying" off screen basically confirms them not being dead.

Even so, they didn't come back in game-- so whether they're properly dead or not... you may have consigned them to... well... I wouldn't like to go to the Fade for a picnic, y'know?

Well i'd leave Warden Alistair behind to die in the fade for my Hawke's, so Stroud would have zero chance of surviving the scenario.

I'm probably one of the only people here that has no problem leaving Hawke for Stroud.

Leaving Hawke in the fade is just evil.

Eh 3 playthroughs so far only let Hawke leave the Fade once and that was on my first playthrough, didn't know better. Don't have any issues leaving him/her in the Fade, never cared for Hawke as a protag much and besides someone has to help the Wardens rebuild so Alistair/Stroud/Loghain have a stronger case for usefulness in this scenario.

It's best to just go with whichever option fits best for your story. For me, a Warden has to be sacrificed, since I'm also recruiting them afterward. Doesn't matter if it's Stroud, Alistair, Loghain or the motherflippin' Hero of Ferelden.

Yeah my first time round was Loghain and Hawke. I looked across at Hawke still in the prime of his life, with a lover and friends who'd grieve him. Then i looked across an ageing, possibly close to his calling, figure who's a warden as an act of atonement for the terrible betrayal he'd made. That  was a simple choice.

Too easy of a choice for me. Hawke IS not only my favorite DA universe character other than current Inquisitor, he (I usually played male Mage) is one of my favorite PC's in any game (along with Shep and Jedi Exile). If given the choice, I will always save that dude. Too bad I executed Loghain myself in Origins, cause I would have saved him with the Urn of Sacred Ashes just so I could leave that aahole  in the Fade to die again. I may just have to make an additional Keep save so I can experience this satisfaction :D.

Also, is there a way to maintain Loghain as Grey Warden without jerking over Alister?

yes in DAOrigins harden Alistar After he leave goldana's home he says something i don't remeber just answer everyone is out for themselves. then he becomes more hardened he marries anora becomes king and you can have loghain as a warden but alistar leaves the party. or you could just go to DA keep and make alistar and anora king and queen and make loghain a warden

In my games:

Stroud or Alistair, the two brave Wardens, who behave with integrity.

Hawke is an idiot and doesn't deserve such an heroic sacrifice. Loghain the traitor bastard is always killed in Origins.

Hawke - Stroud. Bye Stroud.

Hawke - Alistair. I'm sorry Alistair but you have to stay behind.

Hawke - Logahin. Sorry, Loghain, you draw the short stick.

Step 1: keep loghain alive(from DA:O)

step 2: sacrifice loghain

Step 3: seek justification in his whole "nearly destroying fereldan thing"

Step 4: profit

I've only played DAI once (Hawke vs. Alistair, chose Hawke) but here is my thought process for each:

Stroud is way too irrelevant for me to care about. At the same time, I can't really think of any other gray wardens that would have fit better. All the Awakenings people can die iirc, Hawke's sibling may be a mage/templar/dead, lol @ Anders. No wonder Bioware has stopped letting us kill everyone, it fucks over the story. It probably should have been Blackwall in that role, even if he's not really a GW. "Should I kill a former protagonist that I spent a whole game playing as, or this random man with a mustache?" Hmm

Loghain vs. Hawke. lol@ Loghain being able to sacrifice himself to save a player character in yet another game. But still Player character > him even though he is great. I like Hawke, I am the 1%.

Alistair vs. Hawke is impossible and I had to think about it for a long time. Alistair is in my top 3 bioware companions, but because he becomes a complete emotionless mess in DAI I picked Hawke because he still brought moderate lulz.

Hawke and Alistair make very sexual eye contact at one point in the fade. Gaylistair confirmed

Who is Stroud? Oh ... THAT guy with the moustache?

So...who to leave behind? A former incarnation of my player-character, the hero of Kirkwall and friend to Varric or ... that guy?

decisions, decisions ...

Bye that guy!!! Have fun in the fade!

Yeah but if you role play Hawk is nothing for your inquisitor he doesn't even know him. Saving Stroud is the most logical choice because he can save the wardens and train them, Hawke... well Hawke is only a guy that's all.

Is this even a question? Poor Stroud and his mother and kids will all die before Hawke dies. If only they made him important enough in DA2

I can't help but feel that his mustache was trying a bit too hard.

I thought having Stroud as the Warden, as opposed to someone with more long-standing emotional investment, would make the choice easier in favour of Hawke.

Turns out I don't really care enough about Hawke to deny the Great Moustache that is Warden Stroud.

...I... I think Stroud is literally the only one of the three Wardens I have never left behind...

I like giving Hawke a chance to be a true hero. not just someone who happens to be in the right place at the right while trying to protect himself and his loved ones.

I've custom crafted a world state in which Hawke is a dickish murder beast who made every wrong decision just so I could justify leaving her.

Unfortunately this will result in Alistair living but I guess we can't have everything.

Fiona? The leader of the mage rebellion? How the hell does she get into the Fade? My Fiona was glued to the library in Skyhold and yes, I allied with the mages.

Yup! I never wanted Ashley on board the Normandy in the first place but couldn't get rid of her until someone gave me a bomb...

Finoa is Alistair's mother.

The funny thing is as much as Ash annoyed me only once or twice did I ever leave her because Kaiden was useless as biotic next to Liara and Wrex and even less useful as a tech next to Tali, and the only time any of femsheps romanced him it was the most ruthless, racist, and xenophobic FemShepard I ever created and he didn't feel like a good match for her.

Choosing between Hawke and Alistair was agonizing. In the end, I realized I am still a little jealous of the crush my wife had on Alistair when we played DA:O, so he had to go. Not sure I could do it again.

I'm in the same boat on my second playthrough. The first one I had stroud cause Alistair was king. But because of my mages beliefs and personality I had to leave Hawke. Now on this play through Alistair is the warden and I was going to leave the warden until I found out it was Alistair. Now I'm conflicted.
