Hey everyone.

 

I have only finished ME once (when it was released) and never played through it again. Decided to go through it since I'm extremely bored at the moment.

 

I don't remember a thing about the game so all character interactions feel new. I have a very hard time deciding which companions to bring along with me for the missions. I know that I will be using Garrus throughout the whole trilogy run for sure, but I can't decide a 2nd squad mate for this game. I'm torn between Wrex(Shepard), Liara and Tali.

 

My question would be who do you guys prefer to have on your team? I personally like a mix of badassery and humor so I'm leaning towards Wrex.

Are you trying to get the Ally achievements, or just want to know who is fun?

 

I tended to pick Garrus and Liara as something of an any situation team, but there is a decent case to be made to select the team based on Shepard's class.  So which class are you playing for this run?

I tended to pick Garrus and Liara as something of an any situation team, but there is a decent case to be made to select the team based on Shepard's class.  So which class are you playing for this run?

 

I'm not looking for any achievements I just want to pick a squad and run with it through the game. I am a Vanguard but team combat synergy doesn't really matter to me, I want a team for story bits and interactions.

Feros: Ashley-Tali (Yes, it's a human colony, but they're there to fight Geth; who better than a Quarian?)

Noveria: Liara-Wrex (bringing Liara is obvious, but Wrex's reason for being there is too once you get to the Hot Labs.) 

Virmire: Wrex-Garrus (Genophage)

Ilos: Liara-Ashley or Liara-Garrus - Liara has extra dialogue on this mission.

If I had to choose 1 squad (for story reasons only) my top 5 are:

1. Liara-Garrus
2. Tali-Garrus
3. Wrex-Garrus
4. Ashley-Liara
5. Ashley-Tali

And if you're wondering where Kaidan is... he's in his bunk, crying into his pillow because Shepard doesn't like him.

Garrus and Wrex are fun...but if theres to be sniping opportunities I swap Wrex out for Ash and if Biotics will come in handy I swap Garrus out for Kaiden and use Garrus with Tali if there are Geth at close quarters. As for Liara, I don't pick her up until after Virmire, she has alternative dialog if you do that, I find it a lot more entertaining than her usual ... Liara has a temper in ME1 after all

Nice approach, I like those teams, especially the Wrex-Garrus one for Virmire (a turian fighting with a krogan in a mission involving the genophage). I, however, need to pick up Kaidan for at least one mission, I don't want one of my teammate feeling abandoned  .

 

I forgot to mention it in my previous post but, yes, Liara is an obvious choice for Ilos.

I might have liked Kaidan in ME1 had he not sounded exactly like Carth Onasi from KOTOR.  I know he's the same actor, but his performance in ME3 was just different enough to be distinct.

Yeah that's generally how I do it as well pick based on my class and the given mission that I'm about to face.

Glad it wasn't my ears decieving me. When I first heard him on the ship I had to look around to be sure hadn't walked into the Ebon Hawk at the boarding bay by mistake. Same voice inflections and everything.

 

The team I went with was me (adept), tali, and ashley: so three "single class" characters. It made for interesting fights as everyone clearly had their role to fill. My next playthrough I'll probably go with hybrids. And like someone above me, I prefer to pick one team and stick with it (more replayablility that way if nothing else). Bioware games generally don't require you to level up everyone (think near the end of both final fantasy VI and KotOR 2). I think they passed up a golden opportunity by not having you play the 2nd group before 'the choice' - especially since choices you make as Shepard could have influenced what that team faced.

The 'catch all' class is generally Liara + whatever.

 

Wrex is too sexy to not bring along though.

 

Strictly speaking tailoring the squadmates to suit your class build = the way forward, but as others have pointed out there's usually a valid case to mix and match depending on the mission parameters.

Kaidan + Wrex before recruiting Liara
Liara + Kaidan for everything after that except:
Kaidan + Tali for Luna
Liara + Tali for the parts in Virmire where Kaidan is unavailable

If it's humor you're after, I suggest Garrus and Tali as your Squadies. If it's kickassary you want I suggest Liara and Wrex

I usually bring Kaidan along for everything if I'm an Infiltrator or Vanguard. I like a balanced squad so its usually Kaidan+Wrex (Infiltrator) or Kaidan+Garrus (Vanguard)

 

From my last ME1 playthrough with an Infiltrator..

Therum : Kaidan + Garrus

Noveria : Liara + Wrex 

Feros : Kaidan + Tali

Virmire : Kaidan + Wrex

Ilos + Citadel : Kaidan + Liara

 

For other planet side mission with Mako, I usually use Tali + Garrus. For fixing the Mako, decryptions and stuff.

 

But it depends on your characters too, I wouldn't use Kaidan if I'm Adept/Sentinel/Engineer. And I hardly use Ashley since I notice EVERYONE have this inability to point and shoot at anything except the walls... and I rather do the sniping on my own.
