I figure I should post this as a possible fix, although it didn't work for me.
I recall when trying to play Dragon age Origins I had the same error, to fix the problem I had to right click the icon and "Run as administrator"
Worth a try to others who have the issue.

No error is given, the launcher closes and nothing else happens.

Finally managed to get into the game, I re-installed the game, updated my drivers, and then rebooted my PC and now its working, hope this helps anyone else still stuck on this.

I'm having a similar problem. I hit play, but instead I get the black screen that seems to be the launching of the game. But then I just get 'Mass Effect 2 has stopped working'

Have you tried to update all the drivers (expecially video) and tried to run me2 as and Administrator?
(Naloor register your game online if you wish to get assistance :>)

Sure, went ahead and registered the game online.
After reinstalling the game, updating DX and my drivers, and running as administrator, still no dice.
Not even an error message, just 'Mass effect 2 has stopped working.'

I am getting the same kind of error as Naloor, but I am now just assuming my video card sucks.
Edit: I lost hope, I shelled out $60 for a game that I did not make sure my computer could play so my fail, lesson learned nothing I can do now.

ME2 will not start after i hit play. I updated video, Windows & sound drivers to 2010 versions.
I am running Win Vista 32 SP2 (Window index =5.6)
Intel Extreme QX6850 (4 cores @3ghz, ea)
4 G RAM
GeForce 9800 GT Akimdo @ 1G Video mem
I have not had the problem with any other game before. I have tried to restart numerous times, to no avail. I even lowered as many settings as I could in The Config Utility that comes with the game. This did not help, either.
Game installed fine. DLC, ditto, but can't actually play the game.
Please help.
Thanks

Much the same problem. Try to run, screen goes black, then "Mass Effect 2 stopped running."
Win7 64-bit
AMD X2 6000+ (dual core, running@3.01GHz)
2GB RAM
X-Fi Fatal1ty sound card
BFG GTX 285
What's really irritating is that nVidia's driver download page appears to be AWOL for some reason.

I don't know if the site is being slammed at the moment so I apologize for duplicate posts.
I get a black screen followed by an APPCRASH every time I click Play.
Win 7 x64, Core 2 e8400, 4GB, SLI 8800GT's, all current drivers and updates.

Similar problem here. When I click Play, the Unreal Engine 3 starts, the screen goes black, and then I get "Mass Effect 2 has encountered a problem and needs to close."
Windows XP
Core 2 Duo, 3.0GHz
Nvidia 8800GTS, 640 RAM, drivers dated November 20th 2009. (Their website is currently down so I can't check to see if there's anything more recent.)
4 GB RAM
Creative X-Fi (I tried turning off sound in the configuration menu to see if that helped. It didn't.)
The only other thing I did before trying to run the game the first time was tell the configuration where to find the ME1 savegames.

I reinstalled the game, then reinstalled the DLCs one at a time. Works like a charm, now! Try that

I am thinking I have the same problem, when I hit play the screen does go black for a secound or two then back to the desktop with a error that the program failed and if there is a resolution it will be shown bellow.
I am running:
intel 940
Nvidia 220 GT 1GB
4 GB Ram
Soundblaster x-fi gamer Fatality Pro
Windows 7 64bit
All of my drivers are newest and windows is up-to-date. Any ideas on what to try? I have already tried ajusting levels in the ME2 Configure utility.

It looks like we have three post going all having the same issue....I am having the same issues as many of you here....look at this post for my updates....
I think it is related to the install crapping out
http://social.biowar.../index/792476/2
I will test having both disks in at the same time when I start the install later tonight....

Worked!!!
I placed disk 1 in my primary DVD drive and placed disk 2 in my secondary DVD drive then reinstalled ME2 right over my original install. Game now works perfectly. Thanks for all the ideas guys.
