It's not very noob friendly when it comes to some weapon descriptions. Some obviously state that they're a 2-handed weapon, but like you say, in the beginning you can only know by running your mouse or controller over some of them and see how they look on your character.
In the beginning i just assumed they were all 2-handed until proven otherwise simply because there seems to be some sort of 1-handed drought going on within the game.

The easiest way is to look at the damage. Two-Handed Swords and Axes deal AoE damage, while One-Handed Swords and Axes do not. There is a slightly different symbol in the menu for weapons that deal AoE damage.
As for the blunt Hammers, Mauls and Maxes, a little more touchy there, they both only deal single-target damage.
This is also how you can easily tell a Dual-Blade weapon for Rogues from a Dagger. Dual-Blades deal AoE damage, and have the symbol, while Daggers do not.

Also, if you click on it to highlight, it will show it on your toon. If on back 2h, if on hip, 1H.
Because Bioware was also too stupid to write the descriptions, like longsword, greatsword and such meaning 2h, not here, also maul and greatmaul can both be 2h, which is ignorant.
I know they wanted to get the game out, but it is minor ignorant and redundant errors that are really starting to annoy me. None of the other games had these. Such as the entire fight against corypheus at haven where I was looking like I was crucified and immobil yet i was attacking and taking damage. Also the 2nd set of judgements where I was waist deepin throne and also arms in crucified "T" position dealing out justice.
