I have a problem. I continue to create new characters. This is an issue because I don't have a lot of time to play videogames. I need to make a decision on which class to play.

It comes down to either the Knight Enchanter or the DW Tempest Rogue.

I've played both classes to about lvl 10 (at this point I've only played the basic mage class as I haven't been to Sky Hold yet). I like the mage class mainly because of RP reasons. I feel like I have more connection with the struggles between mages and templars. Not to mention slinging spells is quite fun and the thought of being a Jedi makes me all giddy inside.

However, I like the DW rogue class and how it plays in combat. I enjoy using stealth and picking my targets. I feel like it takes more skill to play the class and when fights go according to plan and my rogue is standing among corpses without a scratch, I feel like I've accomplished something without casting spells from the distance.

Anyone else have difficulty settling on a class for their first playthrough? What are your thoughts/suggestions?

TL;DR - I like both mage and DW rogue in this game. I plan on playing either KE or DW Tempest once I get Skyhold. I'm lacking the ability to make up my mind. What are your thoughts?

Thank you

There is no easy answer to this question. Nobody can tell you what to play and it seems you enjoy both classes a lot. My guess is you will get a lot of people tell you Knight Enchanter or Tempest or whatever is better for their own reasons but in the end those reasons might not be true for you. In the end you and only you can decide what you like best of the two no matter what other people might say.

I personally think that the DW tempest rogue is more interesting than the Knight Enchanter because I felt that the DW rogue have more points in what I enjoy. I'm a melee at heart so I'd take a full melee character every time above a range with the ability to occasionally (or not so occasionally) go into melee.

I know I didn't help much but that's my take on the matter. Good luck.

A very personal decision. But you seem to be the person that likes to take pride in a well planned and fought battle.

if that is the case, knight enchanter might not be the thing for you. I tried it, and found it to be rather dull.

I haven't tried DW rogue yet in SP, but I liked it very much in DAMP. And I trust I will like the hit and run tactics in SP as well.

I played an Archer Tempest in my first playthrough (although I did switch to dw on the odd occasion to mix things up!) and I really enjoyed it, although I only ever used Flask of Fire and went to town with Hook&Tackle into a Leaping Shot spam :D

I started a Mage character for my second playthrough and went Knight-Enchanter with her, and again I'm really enjoying it as it offers what a Rogue can't, which is the ability to close gaps and melee, or to stay at range and dps away, without having to respec - even though the "melee" aspect of the spec is somewhat limited :P

From a story perspective, I'm enjoying my Mage a bit more because of the controversial speech options you can have for being a Mage, but as far as the fun factor goes for combat, Mage can be a bit more intensive (especially when you play the only mage in your group as hybrid dps/support on Nightmare).

I'll try to say this with as few spoilers as possible- not sure it even is one but:

Spoiler

I have been playing rift Mage and my first run was DW Rogue. I prefer rogue because I like to be in the thick of combat (I suppose you could correct this with KE Mage but the idea of swinging a spectral sword just doesn't sound that fun to me.

I also played assassin as my DW rogue. Though tempest does look fun. I would just pick your current favorite and go with it and save the alternate class for a second "opposite choices" PT.

Keep Sera (respec as DW) or Vivienne in your party, play the other class yourself and switch control back and forth?

Thank you everyone for your replies! I was able to steal a few more hours to play last night and reached Skyhold with my mage. Let's just say that I really enjoyed the epic battles during the scene in Haven (avoiding spoilers just in case). It was really weird, but I felt more connected with my character at that point. It's hard to explain, but I really enjoyed roasting all of the enemies and when I faced the big guy, my blood was boiling and I wanted a show down right then and there. It's been a while since I felt this way about a main character.

My solution: going KE for my first playthrough. I'll go DW Rogue on my second playthough (time permitting). Hopefully by the time I go through a second time, there will be DLC's that are live and adding more content!

Thanks again!
