True, but I'm a military history buff and I like strategy, and he's my favorite general from WWII.  Not to mention that it'd be interesting to learn his side of the series of 'incidents' leading to his death.

But yeah, Leonardo tops him on who I'd like to meet.   ^_^

Who is your most admired pre-industrial Revolution military leader?

I'd say Philip V of France.

Seemed like a chill guy.

Knew his stuff.

Wasn't an idiot like his brother and uncle.

Ah.  I'm mostly into everything from the invention of gunpowder onward.  WWII is my favorite era, though.

So A-bomb aside and all things being equal.... who was better, Nimitz or Yamamoto?

Hmm... tbh, Nimitz, though I'm mostly interested in the technical side.  You know, like the mechanics of the weapons and vehicles.

Hannibal was an amazing general, but way too ambitious... so much so that even Carthage itself stopped backing him. Still, though, he managed tremendously on his own.

More of a fan of the Roman generals myself, though :) And I do have respect for the way the Republic stood against its greatest enemy and continued to function as normal even when war raged through the heart of the Italian country.

Jesus. I'd imagine two days with Jesus would erase doubt, one way or another.

I don't know... he had twelve of his bro's with him for three years and they still seemed to have their doubts for a while.

The Robb Stark of the real world. Won almost every battle he ever fought, but still lost the war.

Did he lose his war by being a blazing idiot who couldn't keep his dick put away when in public?

Interesting thread. I can't help thinking that many personal heroes here probably would do for very boring or even intolerable company.

No offense, but many of those were so full of themselves, not very bright, single minded and possibly psychopaths, or at least sociopaths.

I would guess writers and artists would in general make for more interesting 48 hours.

My own personal hero, Isaac Newton, might not make that terrific company, either, though there are some questions regarding God and the Christian religion...   But no, not valuable enough.

There's my childhood best friend, who died in a motorcycle accident a couple of years ago, I'd like to meet him again...  But it's maybe too redundant, there's not much more to say and one has to let go.

So what can we possibly think of? I think I'll go for a mystery.

Vivian Maier? She's such a mystery and so utterly, incredibly brilliant. And I'm almost sort of in love with her, even though she wasn't any beauty and died before I knew her name.

Cyrus of Persia? Another of my personal heroes. Not much is known about him, another mystery, but I think he has to rate as one of the greatest statesmen and generals ever. He created something precious. A place of security, peace, co-existence and prosperity, in a world of chaos, raids, rape, pillage and slaughter. Pity he didn't have a good plan for what to happen after his death.

Arthur? Yet another mystery. Lancelot, the knights of the round table, are all just stories from later dates. But Arthur was real and so were all the battles he won as war-leader of Britain.

I think I'll go for Arthur. I'd really like to know more about who he really was. Yes. - Arthur.

Ruined his own nation as a consequence as well. Went to war for nothing, except personal pride and ethnic chauvinism, and against the wishes of the leaders of his country.

No. He basically lost the war because the Romans never gave up. Despite the horrific slaughters. They just got mad. And stayed mad for a long time.
