Asari conceive and bear young and suckle them. They are females. Just because they are the most powerful species in the Universe does not make them somehow 'male'. You can try to lawyer them into a 'hermaphrodite' label if you want, but they are women. They do not impregnate each other with penises. Get over this dead-horse argument already.

Liara says she is not really female. Considering she´s an asari she probably knows better than you.

Actually, she says she's not exactly a woman. There is a difference. The asari, not having males, lack a concept for men and women, and assigned gender roles. They are simply asari. They are all capable of bearing and suckling young, so they are females. No amount of lawyering is going to get around that, folks.

There are plenty of species here on earth that neither bear young or have mammry glands that are still "female", so I'm not sure what your point is.

If there are no Asari males, there are no Asari females.

From Dictionary.com:

female: an organism of the sex or sexual phase that normally produces egg cells.

How exactly do asari not fit this description? Lack of males does not take away from the fact that they are females. Seriously, this is the most ridiculous argument of all time.

If they aren't females, then their species will die out, since they can't reproduce.

How about taking a biology class or something? Your 'argument' is based on semantics, not anything to do with biology. You have reached a false conclusion based on a language issue. This is not 'reasoning'.

Ummm, I have a bachelors in cell biology, not to mention one in biochemistry. And my argument isn't a semantical one, it's a purely scientific/logical one. There is simply no logical reason to call an Asari female when they only come in "one variety".  Biology doesn't simply make things up that have no reason to exist in the first place.

As far as i remember from ME1 and the romance with Liara (where she explains Asari relationships), even physical contact is not needed for birth. The Asari merge their minds with the companion and retrieves genetic data wich then is imbued in the child.

The fact is that by any definition the Asari are considered females by several of the reasons said above (breastfeed, womb, etc.) and males don't exist in their species (and that makes the a mono-gendered species). That and the fact everyone calls them as "she".

Now the fact that they look like normal females (just diferent color) is simply for simplicity purposes for the players. As for the physical contact you could say is used as means of easing the mind meld aspect of it, causing the companion to be rested and confident?

Well that's interesting if it's true. I'd like to hear you make this argument to your colleagues. I have a hard time with the concept that beings that are capable of bearing offspring somehow aren't female. The male/female binary is our paradigm here on Earth, but it doesn't preclude the possibility of an all-female species. Especially since these exist in the natural world.

Many would argue these aren't even a "species", since they are hybridization. But doesn't really matter, there is no reason to refer to such a species as female. There are hundreds of fungi that have asari-like reproduction, and we don't call them "female".

This was raised very early in this thread and it seems like nobody noticed - the Asari refer to the various stages of their life by clearly female terms. I generally don't tend to question the gender of, you know, a "Matriarch".

This is what the asari are, with the added ability to randomize their DNA through biotic melding. They are an all female race, as simple as that. Of course, there society would be vastly different without two sexes, but biologically, they're girls.

Asari are clearly mammals, or mammal-like organisms, rather than something as amorphous as fungi. They have breasts (cue thread troll) and these exist for only one purpose: to suckle young. Male mammals have undeveloped breasts as well. The fact that asari have developed breasts and a womb pretty much clinches the 'female' argument for me.

WRONG. Asari have breasts to be sexually attractive to male players, not to suckle youngs.

First, you have no idea if asari have breats. For all you know, those
"boobs" are their kidneys, or some other organ. Second, you don't know if Asari "suckle" at all. Third, you have no idea if Asari even have a "womb".

As someone said before, you are anthropomorphizing.

Uhhh, no. People from bioware have already said that Asari are NOT females. It's highly unlikely other species all work on binary sexes anyway. Some races may ahve multiple "sexes", what do you call them then? What would you call a race with three sexes? Male, female, and "ohcrapIdon'tknow"?

If one sex fits the concept of a male I'd call it a male. If one fits the concept of a female I'd call it a female. Anything outside those categories is up to that species' discretion as we would have no language to describe them.

These "people from bioware" can't convince me that a tree is a bumble bee. Especially people futilely trying to divert attention from the fact that their game makes a statement that lesbians are OK, but homosexual males are icky.

Now all we need is a person with a bachelors in physics to educate us on how mass effect field actually work. Seriously, I don't care if you had a doctorates in cell biology, was a pioneer in your biochemistry, have 50 years of experience and teach adavanced studies at Harvard. All that matters is that Bioware are not biochemist or physicists and didn't give a rats ass about physics when they invented the FICTIONAL element zero just like they didn't give a **** about biology when they invented the FICTIONAL asari species. The same species that they claim are females in the codex they wrote in the game they created.
