Sometimes I find it fun to have a theme with weapons and armour, like a C-sec theme with Garrus , Ash and Shepard armed with Argus' and Incisor's, or a quarian theme with Reagar Carbines, Adas rifles and Arc pistols for example.

However, I've run into a snag with my Salarian theme - namely the Venom shotgun. That thing is a beast. To compensate I have tried not leveling my companions and only leveling Shep to the minimum but even so it wrecks stuff easily. To be fair it  can be tricky because it seems to need pinpoint accuracy but, honestly, you hit more than you miss. It seems to be up there with the Typhoon or the Stilton.

So, my questions for you are: Do you enjoy these themed weapons and is there a circumstance when you can justifiably take the Venom in your arsenal?

In single player I have only taken the Venom shotgun:

1. When I first got the DLC and wanted to try it out.

2. When I was testing a build (I think it was the Drone Master Engineer I was testing?)

3. When I wanted to cheese my way through the Hades Cannon mission because I hate that mission.

Other than that, I do not use the Venom shotgun because it is waaaay too good.

Of course, that kind of rings hollow when I play the Infiltrator that uses cloak because that is also way too good. I could say the same thing about NovaGuards and any biotic user with Liara+Javik.

Come to think of it, it is really hard to make the single player campaign difficult without relying on gimmick builds/playstyles.

For Venom - don't upgrade it, don't use weapon mods, pair it with Scorpion, don't pick up capacity upgrade for class power, focus on power damage with your armor. Low ammo capacity and slow power recharge might make it somewhat challenging (won't hold my breath though) :D

Regarding themed weapons, I like giving Garrus Phaeston (not like he'll ever use it). If I had Krysae, might've tried giving it to him.

For EDI, I sometimes give her Hornet and Talon.

For Javik - Particle Rifle

For Tali - GPS and Arc Pistol (though she glitched last time I gave her GPS so I switched to Graal Spike Thrower :D)

Other squadmates just get whatever I feel like trying at that point :D

I remember that video, it was one of your first Puppet Master tests. I just re-watched it too when considering using Dominate and it is a good demonstration why the Venom should not be used. I guess if one wanted to do a "who needs squadmates" playthrough like Sinosleep and Crucci used to do in the ME2 days it might be a viable "oh crap" weapon and replace ME2 heavy weapons. Other than that I agree with you.

Ha, that reminds me I've never used the Graal. Why were'nt the turians on Menae using Phaestons?

I used the Venom Shotgun on my Tank Sentinel build. I wanted to complete the AAA's Spectre challenge. I also used during the final mission, because I have little patience for Priority Earth.
It's worth trying a run with only N7 weapons. There are all kinds of guns for that purpose, and any class and build would work well with only N7 guns.

I've returned to my tank Sentinel at the moment to try out Reave with the build to make it as aggressive and up in face as possible.

Good call with the N7 weapons. I have done an N7 alliance squad with my infiltrator character using only the N7 weapons. They are decent, not too powerful but always viable and well balanced.

I don't have the Venom in SP so I don't have this problem. :)
