I haven't really messed with these yet because I haven't respec'd my party once they all received there new tree.  I haven't even decided on what I want to spec by 2HW as....any hoo...how do these work and how fast does focus run out?  I really have no idea but they seem like they could be really helpful.  Thanks in advance.

You get 1 bar to start off with, then you can upgrade to have 3 bars by spending perk points. You can check the increased power by hovering over the focus skill.  To be honest though, the focus skills seem to lack the  " oomph " considering that it takes a while before you can use them again. The bar fills up as you kill enemies, so the more you kill, the faster it fills up.

Focus bar fills uup by doing combos etc. I personally am happy with just t1 focus so far. Now for the abilities the one we all get Mark of the rift is actually quite decent and a warrior does not get many good ones. Cassandra can take car of your rally, champion countersrike is ok and reavers rampage is good sometimes. So for warriors we actually get a good damage dealing ability right of the bat and cassandra gets you rally. That way we are sorted.

Will also add team mates have their own focus bar so you can use each of their focus abilities at the same time. SO go ahead and use focus when you need it.

like I just wrote in the other thread:

1000 cuts (from Sera) cut the dragon's life bar in half.

so yes: they are very very powerful.

Maybe even too powerful

forgot to mention:

the focus abilities are only needed for the big bosses anyway.

All those "victims" you meet between the big fights are cannon fodder anyway.

so I absolutely recommend to focus on the focus-abilities ;-)

The mage focus abilities are a mess. The combat/self-augmenting, solo-capable Knight Enchanter gets to summon spirits to resurrect everyone else (which he doesn't need to do), the support/spirit summoning Necromancer gets a combat/self-augmentation buff (that he doesn't need), and the Rift Mage gets a refugee from the inferno school that does the same thing as Mark of the Rift, but not as well (and therefore, you guessed it, he doesn't need).

Tbh, I'm glad Mark of the Rift is class-agnostic, as I'd feel ripped off otherwise. It's like the devs got mixed up - functionally and thematically, none of the spec focus abilities match the spec they're in. I stick with the Rift.

Focus recharges very quickly if you execute combos.

In my first playthrough I was way too conservative in saving Focus abilities, but no I use them all of the time on Nightmare. Almost everyone in my party has a focus ability, and I let some of them use them at their own will (they A.I. for Varric, Cole, Blackwall, & Solas are pretty good at not wasting it on just a couple of enemies).

It usually takes only 5 min to regain a single focus bar for a character, so Focus abilities are always in suuply.
