Hi

Sorry if posting in the wrong section!

Been watching loads of video's of DA:I and think I like the look of it and want a game I can get my teeth into.

My only concern is I don't generally play RPG games and play more games like Fifa,Battlefield,Far Cry 4 etc.

Is this a game you can play and learn over time and not feel overwhelmed straight away and never play it??

I'm a total noob with RPG games and want to like one lol

Thanks

I'd say it's a pretty good place to start, yes. Don't be ashamed to put it on Casual difficulty while you're learning!

The world has a lot of history to it (not least from the two other games) but don't worry too much if you don't understand every little reference straight away.

You know when you read a book and have no idea what's going on in the first chapter or so beyond what's immediately told to you, eventually understanding the setting and plot as you progress through it?

That's how DAI is. The first few hours is rather hectic, so make sure to read the codex (The DAI encyclopedia) to understand what's going on if you haven't played previous games. The entries are added over time so you never feel overwhelmed and they are often fun to read.

The combat system is a little unfriendly at first at higher difficulties if you're a newcomer so I suggest sticking to Casual and avoiding the tactical camera.

Throughout the first portion of the game, you receive tasks that essentially introduce you to 90% of the game's systems so just follow what's given to you in the journal.

Since this is an RPG, make sure to talk to people to get to know them, receive information and opinions, and interact with them.

It's a relatively complex game on the surface but it all melds seamlessly as you play it personally. :)

I agree that trying it on Casual setting to start with is a good idea.

Difficulty setting has no in-game impact at all.

Then just roll with it and see what you think.

I would rather knock myself unconscious with a Haddock than play Fifa, Battlefield, or Far Cry 4, so it will be interesting how you find the game.

Thanks all.

Think I will give it a try and hopefully get addicted to the game/world and enjoy it.

Based on the reactions of a friend with a sim background, I recommend DAI or even DA2 first, as it has gameplay that may help crossover to your chosen genre. Then if you desire story over the gameplay, go to The Keep to hear your tales narrated, and play DAO; one of the best RPG's ever.

If you like world of warcraft and skyrim, then yes, this is recommended. Be warned though, if you didn't play the past games then some of the events and termonologies mentioned in game may leave you scratching your head.

I think DA2 is the easiest to get the feel of the franchise, certainly worth it if you can get it at the cheap.

My best friend is an FPS, action game player. I'm always recommending RPGs to him and he's always recommending shooters and trying to get me to play MP with him.

I got him into Mass Effect and Dragon Age games, he likes DA2 and DA:I more than the original because the combat is faster paced and more action oriented. But he's enjoyed all the games for the most part. You won't know what's going on at first. You can probably get the second game cheap and that story ties into this one. The first one is farther removed.

I still haven't found a FPS that holds my attention too long so he's gotten the better end of this lol. He said if I didn't like battlefield 2 bad company, Crysis 1 or Call of Duty 4 - Modern Warfare it was probably a lost cause.

ok I play a lot of battlefield etc and love this sort of game as well give it a go but please give it 10 or so hours to get used to it. just try to look at it from a battlefield point of view your squad must cover all targets ie magic (jets/helo) tanks (tanks) archers (snipers) and 2handed weapons (assult) try to get a group that fits you and your be fine.

I'd recommend that you play the multiplayer first, trying each of the three characters available by default.  This will help you learn a number of core gameplay principles, and also how each class differs from each other.

Out of curiosity, have you played either Fallout 3 or New Vegas? They're probably one of the better games for RPG fans to get started on FPS since they bring some RPG elements along and are essentially Skyrim/Oblivion with guns.

Other than that those games are all modern military shooters that strive for similar gameplay with the exception of Crysis adding in the suit powers.

You could try other stuff like Shadow Warrior, Wolfenstein: The New Order and the BioShock or Metro series.

If you don't mind outdated graphics there's always the classics like Doom, Half-Life, and Duke Nukem 3D.

Kind of went off-topic there, but I'm somebody who actually went from a FPS heavy background to playing RPGs =P

I've heard about Fallout but never tried it. I just bought a new GPU and I can get a game free, assassin's creed unity, far cry 4, or something called the crew. I may try Far Cry 4. I'll try fallout between DA:I and the Witcher 3. My best friend is mostly military shooters so I don't think he's plays Fallout. It all started when he got me to play Gears of War and I was like this is kind of like ME2.

I dunno if those are much closer to FPSs than Aaleel already has been after playing the ME games. Except for the true FP perpective, of course.

Though as long as we're talking hybrids, I'll plug Deus Ex. Finally picked up the original in recent GoG sale. (Lately all my game purchases have been for $5 or less; FTL for $2.50 today.) A lot of, um, familiar elements in that game if you played ME or KotOR.

I haven't tried FC4 yet but I've heard it's pretty much exactly like Far Cry 3 which was great.

Gears of War is what popularized cover based shooting, so ME2 ended up borrowing a lot from it when they revamped the combat system.

Fallout 3 and New Vegas is a common pick for Steam Sales as well. Between the two I find Fallout 3 is more atmospheric in the world while New Vegas has better writing since Obsidian handled it.

I was more thinking of the hybrids being a good bridge, much like people recommend Mass Effect to people coming from FPS to RPG because it's still got a lot of core TPS mechanics. Actually, Mass Effect is a pretty good bridge going either way.

Deus Ex is good as well, either the original if you don't mind outdated graphics or Human Revolution.

Not really a hybrid, but I also forgot to mention Borderlands. It's a better one to play in co-op with friends, though,
