Has anyone had a hard time beating the game? Is anyone stuck anywhere? Did Bioware go Dark Souls on us with this last entry into the DA series?

Those questions were rhetorical.

People and new comers shouldn't be concerned whether the Necromancer is a terrible specialization damage output wise compared to other classes (at least, pre any bioware buffs). They should be concerned about if the class is any fun to play, great for lore, and how if effects interactions with your other characters.

To be fair, some of those questions have been asked and answered. But those conversations get drowned out in the forums from all this nerd rage about class statistics.

Lets get over all this % differential in DPS or DOT or whatever.  Again, this game is NOT hard to beat. If you're into that dewy decimal **** about how many seconds you shave by going  KE or RM compared to the Necro that's fine continue to debate those numbers. Just keep it down a bit so we can actually be helpful to question askers.

To all mage newcomers, let's make this clear once and for all. Despite all the nay sayers - the Nercomancer is amazing fun to play. It's a GREAT class. Do a quick save before committing and give it 20-40 minutes to try out. After you first witness Walking Bomb in action, you will not regret it.

I agree with you. You can spec any class to beat the game on nightmare. They all have their strengths and weaknesses. Personally I just like to bring Dorian everywhere with me though and I don't see the point in having 2 necromancers in the party so I play rift Mage.

Watching exploding watching bomb spread to a cluster of enemies is a lot of fun though.

Absolutely nothing wrong with the necromancer, much like you said, any class can beat nightmare. It all boils down to playing to your strengths. I took a couple of archers with me, archer cole and varric and specced them both into mercy killing, auto crits against panicked enemies. I think the issue many people have is that the specialization loses a lot of it's potency against bosses since they aren't typically affected by status effects, still walking bomb is a great power since not many enemies are spirit resistant.

Nothing wrong with necro. I love that the spec is based on fear and d.o.t.

I too take Dorian with me everywhere, i love watching enemys run into my static cage+ after casting horror on them.

I think the main problem with peoples dislike of the spec is that they were probably hoping for a diablo 2 style necro with all the meat shields but i honestly think thats boring, just standing there casting minions after minions.

I don't think it's beyond expectations to argue which classes are better and which are worse in a forum dedicated to discussing the strengths and weaknesses of said classes.

So here's a (hopefully right) question I have about the Necromancer: On my next Mage playthrough I'm going to be traveling with Solas, so I'm thinking about scrapping my previous plan to play a Rift Mage and going Necromancer instead for some variety. What's a good way to build a Necromancer/Rift Mage duo to complement each other? Obviously, Pull of the Abyss and Walking Bomb have some great synergy, but is there some other good combos I should watch out for? What skill trees would go better on either character?

I think something being fun to play is the most important thing but balance, even in a singleplayer title, is still a concern. It's really hard to logically justify deliberately nerfing your character simply to have fun or to roleplay. Having a harder time of things isn't usually fun. I'm no min-maxer, but if something is noticeably worse than the alternative in most major ways I find it difficult to justify using it.

As a side note, I'm a little surprised that the mage specializations are the ones most often talked about. I had far more issues with the balance of the Warrior specs, and quite frankly, they aren't that much fun, either. Reaver is alright, but Templar and Champion are both pretty boring. Champion also breaks the game as badly as Knight Enchanter.
