Hey guys, im new to this so please bare with me.

I was playing DA:I multiplayer last night and i saved up enough gold to buy a large chest.

When i opened it i got a level 6 blue stave, a level 1 white dagger and some other stuff.

On checking the stave and the dagger i noticed that the dagger had 3x more dps than the stave, even though the dagger was more common and lower level. Is this right?

Cheers peeps, Ali.

Staves tend to have lower DPS than the other weapons, but Mage spells tend to deal a higher % of weapon damage.

DPS is only a slight indicator on the quality of the item. Daggers go all the way up to ~450 DPS, while staves get to ~150. I would not get in the habit in looking too far into the DPS of said weapon, but more so the other stats. (i.e. base damage, procs, and passives). Also just another fyi, color rarity is another thing you should not bank on so much. The best staff in the game is a blue, while you can have a ilvl 6 purple staff.

Yep, sounds about right.

You'll see different levels of DPS between commons/rares/uniques. Sometimes a higher level common (say lvl 22), may be betetr to use than a medium level rare (for DPS).  However with rares and Uniques you also have extra perks you may not see on a common.

Also, not all weapons will have the same damage ranges. Staves are the lowest overall DPS (that i've seen so far), but still pack a punch.

As you play and receive items from chests you will see more variation and get a better idea of what to use.

DPS means damage per second, and if damage on weapons are similar, but DPS isnt it is purely down to attack speed. Assassins have a high attack speed with daggers, while greatswords attack slower.

Lets not forget that mage staffs ignore armor on enemies, where all other weapons are affected by the enemy's armor rating.

All things being even. A single attack from any character should deal the same amount of damage. Theorectically anyways.

Well that's not true, a single attack results in wildly different damage based on weapon.

Staves have the lowest base damage and DPS out of all weapons, which seems fair if you take into consideration that none of the rogues and warriors have 3200% AoE damage abilities.
