I mean, an enemy whose beatability (not a word, me thinks) is very very often contingent on you hosting the game?

Am I missing something?  I just got in a rather heated argument with a pug about this...and then we all died; my lvl 8 elementalist was no match for the d.c.

Tbh I've been playing this for while...decided before you plant banner only 1 person attacks boss and run in circles :)
Then he will only appear under that person/shoot that 1 character.

Rest of team just clear adds. Works.....most of the time lol

Moving all the time, being a tank, having a keeper/Elementalist do barriers typically does the trick.

Being arcane warrior
/thread lol
On a serious note the tank needs to target him first and nobody else should.
The tank can learn his pattern and have full guard while slowly dealing damage and keeping threat rating increased. Tank won't die if done properly. 2 steps, turn to face glyph with shield up and full guard instantly. Third scream frightens you so on third scream put up shield. Don't waste stamina on anything else

A few useful tips when fighting the demon commander:

 - Everyone probably knows this but you get some black/green smoke around your character. This is your signal to get the F away. Fade step or similar skills help. Or pop those skills that makes you invulnerable, like fade step or walking fortress.

- You can run out of the range of this skill aswell. If you have the aggro it is good to know when he pops out, has he will once usually pop up somewhere away from you and fire two shots, then fight. Once he goes back down he will come up under a player. Thats your signal to start running. If there is little or no lag, this will always get you out of his uppercut range. Just dont stop running until that black smoke is gone. Skills like stealth (higher run speed) and charging bull can also get you of range. Things like leaping shot can also work but its unreliable. Running is a better option.

- Fight the demon commander inside the room, and whoever who does not have aggro fights or control the adds coming in the doorway. If you try to leave you will most likely get overrun by all the adds like wraiths and fear demons.

- If you have a skill like shield wall, you can stand next to a wall to force the demon commander up in front of you. That way you can block his uppercut and gain guard.

- If you have someone who has barrier and knows how to use it, you should be fine. He should know that barrier is most important right before the uppercut and he should also know who has aggro. If you play keeper, try to notice this. If you manage to negate his uppercut he is almost as easy as the red templar commander.

- Good luck! :)

The easy answer is your level 8 Elementalist should invest in getting to Barrier quickly.  No other skill in the game changes how people can play it more than that one. As long as you have Barrier on, DC's existence is nugatory.

If you want to actually be skillful and learn and stuff, you know, do what everyone else already suggested.

Have too agree with most, barrier is the easy answer, thou there are other ways without it, this is really the right way to do things. Killed this boss plenty with even a full pug group. Get out of the starting zones for one, once you get around 13 or so start the next tier, while un-doubtfully you will run into more Arcane Warriors (as that is the current flavor OP of the month) you will get groups more dedicated in working together. Those that don't will go to the lower tiers with their level 18's or so an d keep grinding the long way. Why mention that? Simply you need people that work together as a group, pretty simple really. Great fun when people do and don't rush it, which in the higher setting games you will rarely have unlike starting level settings.

This then makes bosses like this a snap to deal with, it is becoming a general thing now on 5/5 mission that 3 stay at the entry of a final level, one goes in to trigger. etc.... the tactics are becoming a norm more and more. In the higher rankings you will even have tanks who tank, archers and casters who wait to fire till the tank gets the agro and more. People who in general play the game with more thought to the outcome then just blindly going in killing whatever they see.

NONONO! Never fight in that room unless you can rely on your team to stay out of it. The wisps clog the doorway effectively trapping you in there

With a tank it is very easy. Just make sure you activate shield wall when you see the "smoke". Other classes must use barrier, evade or simply keep jumping in circles ;)

Wraiths you mean? First of all, unless its the tiny tiny room, this is by far the best option, unless you are stacked enough to fight whatever it is outside, but once that happens - everything is easy. Secondly, how can wraiths block anything. Just kill them. Should be quick. Atleast they are not firing at you from all angles while getting hit by the demon commander, fear demons and the likes. Maybe you can take the fight outside and constantly be on the move, but I've had most success by leading all enemies through a single point on the map, while one person kites the demon commander. Or you can stand in a stairway with constant barrier. Or have someone carry you like a correctly build AW. Or a good tank. At that point it really doesnt matter if you are dead or alive. He'll finish it for you.

There are many ways to do it. I'm just suggesting some.

Besides, I have completed the demons faction a few hundred times now on all difficulties combined, I think I know a little bit of whats smart and whats not.

It's amazingly easier with three friends then three randoms. At least then you can strategize before hand, like are you gonna hold the room or everyone kite, or just one person kite the DC while everyone else focuses on the weakness ghosts, pop up weasels, and spider slow down ho's, or hell, just dps the DPS the DC out real fast if everyone brought their good crap, lol.

Randoms seemingly always want to hold that damn room, no matter what, even when you know they are on their last lives and don't have the dps nor tanks to hold it. That can make the DC fight nasty and unwinnable, or maybe it is winnable and I just don't feel like soloing it for the randoms and then get called bad names afterwards for not dying with them in the room, lol.

The DC isn't really that hard, but you've got to know what your assets are going in. There is a strategy against DC with every team, it's about knowing it, and then what your options are. Whether you have the damage bonuses and the DPS to take it right to him, the tanks to go blow for blow, whether you need to take out those pesky Wraiths first, and if so who's kiting away the boss. It might take some time to figure that out, and (hopefully) a team that is willing to do that instead of turtling in the antechamber.

I'm trying to look at it from a perspective of not having the best gear. Wouldn't a crew with minimal gear be better off in the open considering the other demons that can teleport and knock you down, slow you, or even freeze your feet in place?

- You can run out of the range of this skill aswell.

Funny thing that. I don't recall a single time sprinting has worked to dodge his pop up. Jumping works almost every time (barring laggy hosts), but running? Not once I think.

I've had my Keeper sprinting in a straight line when the smoke appeared, then activated Fade Step a second before he popped up. I was halfway across the map when he appeared, but I still died instantly. There was no noticeable lag. Charging Bull and other movement abilities have the same result. I can only assume the posters who claim sprinting will work are playing a different version of the game.

All the other suggestions in this thread will work, though.

It actually does. I remember a dev saying you could sprint to avoid it way back so I decided to test it the other day, I soloed him with a lvl 1 Keeper (so it took a while to kill him) dodged him every time. I doubt it works off host though regardless of how good the connection is.
