I'm just wondering what does promoting a class to the front-lines of Single-Player Galaxy at War do exactly?  Buff stats? Give XP? Or does it not really do anything at all (other than make you re-level the class)?

It adds 75 points to your war assets I think, adds ten points to your N7 rating and allows you to replay the class from level 1.

Promotion is most useful for resetting your powers without burning a reset card. Some players also use it for epeen purposes to buff their N7 score.
