The point that this was a behind closed doors pre-alpha demo is clearly not getting through is it?

Well I for one think you;re downplaying this, its hardly just a room of people, its a presentation to a fairly substantial audience, certainly I've seen similar size panels at conventions. The people there were clearly not subject to NDAs so the info was always going to be publicised.

Here is the video:

My guess: they were developing with new gen in mind (even though the game had been announced for last gen). Once they got closer to the end of development, they realized that many of the things they set out to do would just not be possible on old gen. Instead of cutting content on old gen versions, they scaled everything back on all versions. I think this is most notable when looking at the grass. The grass is tall and flowing in this pre-alpha build. It looks so good. Yet what we got in the final version was short unremarkable grass.

Essentially, the game seems to have been downgraded. Despite not being a direct feed video, I dare say this pre-alpha gameplay looked better than the actual game we got. Usually, games tend to get better looking as time go by (the exception being Ubisoft). Final versions of a game are almost always better looking. Yet this is not the case here. Things like being able to interact and destroy surroundings, better looking nature, the effects being more pronounced of the inquisition on the surrounding area - these things all point to the game having been severely downgraded. And the only culprit I see is old gen.

Old gen, always ruining things. I wonder how the game would have been if they had not been forced to scale it down for old gen. Ever since current gen came out, I can't stand to even look at old gen. And examples like this just turn me off of old gen even more. It's time to move on people!

Sure, it's not 6 people - it was to get feedback.

But crucially it is not a public distributed trailer, it is not completed content (a long way from it).

To take it as a definitive promise of the final article is unreasonable.

Oh, bs. A company of this scales knows very well what technology will work on what hardware.

Alpha gameplay that is superior to actual gameplay for marketing purposes  is nothing new. Look at Watch Dogs and BioShock Infinite alpha demos and compare them to the actual games.

I really want to know what the hell Bioware was thinking, boasting about a game in Alpha stage.

Its actually quite a human reaction.

DA2 had a tough reception, so 2.5 years later, and about a year post-ME3 and all that agro,

this is the first opportunity to show some people what BioWare have been working on.

I don't think they are boasting, there's certainly bravado, perhaps covering up nervousness at the possible reaction.

So they are upbeat, excited, here's a good news story for a change and they talk about the cool stuff they were working on,

shown in a demo (no doubt held together with developers string and duck tape under the surface.

Then as work progressed and the deadlines loomed, they did what all game developers do and made those tough final edits.

Even then, they needed another 6 weeks (and possibly could have done with a couple more).

Either way, none of this was for public consumption

(for the umpteenth time)...

I might also add, just look at how little BioWare are saying about Mass Effect

and no doubt there will be complaints about Bioware not talking about it enough.

Things change.

Its very likely these things that we think would've been fun wouldn't actually be fun once we tried it.

Who knows. Thats why there are playtesters.

Side note- It autocorrected to platesetters. Why is that a thing
