One thing I am guessing, not sure if this is how it works, but I'm thinking that it helps to buy up all the schematics at vendors to eliminate them from being options on a random loot. This will make it more likely to find the ones you want.

I for one love the idea of a super-rare, elusive schmatic. Trust me, if you had everything handed to you, you would beg for the few super rare schematics back.
No, I would NOT. I was perfectly happy with the loot systems in DAO and DA2. Don't presume to know what other people want and will like.
If you like the DAI system, great for you. But you are YOU, not me.
I play World of Warcraft where I have had to deal with RNG bullshit for nine years. Killing the same boss over and over and OVER again and the thing I want or need never drops. My guild mates get all of their set pieces, and sets for their offspecs, while I can't complete my primary set. Then after all that, additional loot from the same boss that no one wants is trashed, sold for cash, or disenchanted (for crafting), and I STILL don't have my thing. It sucks.
[edit]
And then I go back to an old raid for kicks and the thing I could have used two years and 10 levels ago drops. No, it was not satisfying to finally get it. It pissed me off. But WoW is an MMO. I expect this loot system from an MMO, and although it makes me insane sometimes I do deal with it.
That does not mean I wanted it in Dragon Age.

I haven't taken those perks. I can't even be sure that's where I got it from, but for whatever reason I've got a memory of purchasing it there. I could be wrong.
Interesting, I didn't realize it could be purchased at all, much less in Val Royeaux.
I had this schem drop only once...on my qunari pt.

You can't buy the helm of the inquisitor but there are a few inquisitor helms for sale like the scout

I wish I could remember where I got it, then. Not that it would help, given its random nature. It certainly wasn't anywhere in western Orlais (Western Approach, Forbidden Oasis [which I haven't even visited yet], the Hissing Wastes [which I've only now entered as of today]) or north of Val Royeaux, and did not come from a dragon. Main story wise,

Damn so this thing is truly random..
I just got the Helm schematic in the Hinterlands of all places... near the Redcliffe farms, where the mages/templars are fighting. Last time it was a mid-level shard room. I don't think it matters what level you are... I'm lvl 4! It's still an orange/masterwork though.
I don't know if this will discourage people or give em hope.. it exists.. you just don't know where you'll find it.

You can obtain the schematic from any Tier 2 chest as long as you're willing to save / reload for what could be a very long time. The schematic does not appear to be purchasable at any merchant, even with the Short List perk. As far as I know, it is completely unconnected to your level. There are several Tier 2 chests that I think are very convenient to farm (Redcliffe Chantry, Redcliffe Castle, the trio of chests in the Blood Cliffs, windmill in Fallow Mire, and the chest pictured in the first post in this thread: http://forum.bioware...-of-the-game/). Other posters have had luck with the Still Ruins, Coracavus, and other locations. This thread may be worth a look: http://forum.bioware...helm-schematic/

I see. I've farmed plenty of tier 2 chests before..and never had luck that way. These two times I got it, it was the first try. So it made me think it was random. My mistake. You're right though... I imagine it'd take a long time to get it, if you're trying. Maybe because it's a Masterwork? Anyways, thanks for the info.

Well, you are correct about it being random, but you don't have a random chance of having it drop from any chest in the game. You have a zero percent chance of having it drop from a Tier 1 chest or a Tier 3 chest. It's a random drop from Tier 2 chests. I wish it would have been a set drop from a dragon instead of, or perhaps in addition to, being available from Tier 2 chests. That way all players could earn it, instead of having to rely on good luck at Tier 2 chests, with no guarantee of ever receiving it.
Oh, and post #45 in this thread appears to confirm that the schematic can drop for any player, no matter how low their level: http://forum.bioware...chematic/page-2

Maybe, but the RNG system as it stands is awful. Probably one of the worst ideas they had. And hell, it would even be one thing if it was RNG for drops, but chests? Jesus. Save scumming is necessary when you're a mage in an ocean of damn daggers.
I think in a single player RPG, loot should generally have a place where it lives. I should know that I get this schematic in this chest, for example.
exactly, right out of an MMO... without the benefit of auction houses to sell what you don't need, to buy what you do

For those looking to get the Helm of the Inquisitor schematic, it's a random drop from any chest that gives tier 2 schematics.
I usually get mine by farming the 2 chest in Hinterlands, outside the Keep where that cult is stationed. Though any chest will do. Just keep in mind it's a rare drop so might take a while.
The RNG system for schematics is a damn nightmare.
Even if you use the chest farming method, there no guarantee of getting the schematics you want. Not to mention that it makes no sense to use RNG in a story driven rpg, where loot and gear aren't even a focus of the game. All that Bioware will accomplish with this system is frustrate the players who do enjoy crafting and possibly make them give up. Who wants to go through the game hoping they might get the necessary schematics or possibly spend hours abusing the system in hope of securing the needed gear?
We either need more merchants that sell random schematics and have their inventory replenish on regular basis or have a repeatable war table mission that is guaranteed to reward random schematics.

I don't think I will ever be making it again regardless of it I get it or not.
Oh, I also Got the schematic for the Helm of the Inquisitor but never made one. I might of gotten schematics for one of the staves too but u wasn't using a Mage at the time so didn't care.

I got it again, on another character (the day after I just got one).
Thank God I have the free time though. This is unfair to most players. It's still a pretty rare drop, even when knowing it's in a Tier 2 chest.
Also, just to point out... the chest in between the tents where Cassandra stands is the first tier 2 chest we run into I think. This might be the earliest one can find it.

It's funny. I Actually got the dwarven longsword schematic early on with my last character. I made it for Cassandra than just sat their looking at how ugly it was wondering what the hoopla was about.

I've gotten the Helm of the Inquisitor from the Emerald Graves dragon in each of my two playthroughs. I found the schematic very early in my second, but even with the best materials, its of a lower level than the one I found. I think its cap is 26, and the found one is 32.
