Man dont remind me about Anders, I wanted to strangle the bastard from the DAO:A, in DA2 I tried interacting as little as possible with the pest.

As for the way the relationships are now handled, they are less clear because there is no handy scale like in the DA2 but they are also less binary. You now can be a good friend without getting into the flirty part. But still I would like the handy scale back, it makes it hard to track of who approves what and when.

Thankfully.

It was awkward having to turn people down and honestly I rather initiate. It feels better.

The issue for me with DA2 was that there wasn't an option that wouldn't increase Ander's rivalry with you. I don't swing that way, but I have never wanted to come across like a ******, and Anders always made me feel like one for not accepting his advances. My sister played the game as a female Hawke and felt the same way about Anders. Unfortunately, BioWare responded the way that they always do when this sort of thing comes up: throw out the entire idea and never do it again. I love BioWare, but it's like they've never even heard of the concept of "refinement".

I think this is 90 per cent of the problem with the Anders first LI conversation. You couldn't turn him down without sounding like a jerk and then gaining rivalry points right away.  That's what annoyed a lot of people I know.

Companions will eventually pursue you, you just have to pick a couple of subtle flirt options first. Most just sound like compliments that you'd give anyone (YOU the player only know it's a flirt because of the heart in the dialogue wheel). It's just the game wanting you to let it know if you want the romance since people went nuts over Anders hitting on you in DA2 (I liked it).

I find it funny that people still expect Anders to be rational.

I find it funny they found 1 line where they were not in control over what's going on to be so frightening.

Too bad. T'was so much fun to read their butthurt.

Companions will eventually pursue you.

Uh... no. They won't. They'll just accept it and you still will have to do 90% of the work.

Agreed, and not just because I'm asexual. It was supremely annoying in past games how certain characters were written to respond to friendliness (from an opposite-sex protagonist in particular) with the assumption that I wanted "more". No. I was being a friend. I want you as a friend. Don't inanely confess your Twoo Wuv to me out of the frickin' blue, that's beyond pretentious as well as immersion-breaking.

lol Alistair was really bad for that when he is telling you about being royalty and how he doesn't want you to treat him differently. And you can tell him something like I like you for who you are. he suddenly thinks your madly in love with him and then you have to "break up" with his ass and every thing gets weird from there.

Anders: "Things got a bi..."

Hawke: "Shut up Anders."

Anders: "Okay, then"

Ironically the way to end any Anders conversation without any rivalry.

"Read my mani.."

"Shut up, Anders."

"Our peop..."

"Shut up, Anders."

"You've never been to a..."

"For the love of Andraste, shut the hell up, Anders!"

Aggressive options are here for you, people.

I remember ignoring all the flirt options because I honestly had no idea who I wanted to romance on my first character. The heart icons would just hang there in the dialogue tree back in Haven where all the companions stood while waiting for the Inquisitor to come around. I did one of Blackwall's quests (get four signs of the warden or something like that) and back in Haven, he thanked the Inquisitor for her help, talked about what a formidable woman she was and how he admired her. With that conversation, a heart icon that showed up: "You admire me?" Can easily interpret this as Blackwall making the first move and then being able to follow up with the "you're oddly charming for a man I found in the woods" heart icon that hangs in his dialogue wheel.

In DAO, I was very careful about what I said to Leliana because she'd ninjamance you if you weren't careful. Don't ever tell her you like your hair or the next time you talk to the person you are in a romance with, they'll be all upset because they think you are in love with Leliana.

I'm assuming that you weren't around for Andersgate 2011, huh?  Short version?  Because Anders hit on Hawke (specifically male Hawke) without Hawke initiating it, some people were highly offended.  Now it might have to do with the somewhat limited ways that Hawke can respond, but I'll leave that for people who can actually explain it better.  Gaider has since stated on his blog that it's unlikely that they'll ever have an LI initiate the overt flirting/romance dialogue again.

Yep, typical BioWare loading the bazooka to kill a fly.

Our fem Shep was all over Jacob. The way she flirted with him looked like she was going to hump him on the nearby table. I really thought things were about to get nasty in one of the scenes.

Ha! Yea. Just talking to him made me feel uncomfortable because of her stance. Very predator like.

This happened to me on my first playthrough! I was so confused, even more so when I learned it was all because I complimented her hair. What would've she done to my Warden if I complimented her shoes? :D

People already complain about Bull being too creepy and aggressive when he  comes to your bedroom after flirting with a brick wall non stop. Just imagine how much rage there would have been if he initiated, LOL.

It's something I miss too, having Zevran offer to give you a massage in DA:O was awesome, and I would have loved to have that again. But I can see why Bioware would rather just not deal with the way people project onto the simplest of lines/intentions. At least this way, they can hide behind the firm barrier of "If you don't like it, don't do it."

This is the thing that I always find odd.  People want realistic reactions from the companions.  But then, when they give you an incredibly realistic reaction from Anders (a notoriously moody, emotional, and irrational man who is slowly losing his grip on sanity), they complain.  I just don't get it.  How else would you expect Anders to react when you reject him while he's in a vulnerable state?

I haven't played DA2 so I can't comment on Anders, but I know from my experiences with and discussions about other games that the thing that bothers most people -- aside from that BS of pushing towards "romance" instead of the platonic friendliness we were going for -- is the fact that there was generally no way to say "no" without coming across as a complete jerk. The end result was a double whammy of unwanted and unmerited (due to never showing interest ourselves) advances and the feeling that we're assbags for even thinking of saying no. It felt manipulative, like being blamed for something we didn't do and didn't even intend to do.

You're the Herald of Andraste. You're the leader of the Inquisition. You have a glowy thing on your hand. Now who would flirt with someone like that? They're probably scared shitless of you.

Or they'd probably think it's a fade gloryhole and go "hmm, desire demons are on the other side, right?"
