I see your point.

Especially when, earlier I started a new PT of ME1. Now keep in mind it's been a long time since I played so my memory is foggy when it comes to the dialogue wheel.

Anyway, I pick the middle option on the wheel when femShep is talking to Kaiden. I didn't want to flirt (as the first option implies) nor did I want to be a b*tch in that conversation (bottom).

So what happens?

Suddenly my usually, b*tchy femShep sounds like she wants to bed him right on the spot, talking about "romantics" and some other garbage.

No. Just no! She isn't into men.

If you use the flirt option once (yes, just once, that's all it takes) then you will have somebody turn up to your place wanting a root.

Bs pretty much. They all had a certain point when the flirt initiated the romance, it wasn't just any fliirt.

No it's not. I flirted with Merrill once way early in the game, after completing her final personal quest she came to the Hawke estate and pretty much confessed her feelings.

My only problem with the current game, in regards to romances is....

Cringe-worthy pick up lines.

Seriously.

"I hope you stick around Sera, I hope you'll feel the same way."

Oh I don't know, Male Inquisitors: "I love you' in deadpan voice, was pretty bad...

Romances that is!

Am I only one who actually would prefer if our LI options actually were ones that made first move(female LIs I can understand not making first move in here)? It is like you are one that needs to start everything,LI options don't even show 0 interest in you until you make a move.I would usually go and say that I understand Cullen because he never was in love before but hell in DAO even he flirted with my Warden, while with Inquisitor is more like "Oh I didn't noticed you until you gave me a smile and made a move".Also many characters in DAO hit on you first if you gain their approval enough, they will flirt with you first and I liked that but in DA:I no one does first move at all it is always Inquisitor that makes move first, except Sera but she only shows interest in female Qunari.I always expected that of Cullen to be one that becomes shy around you and make some "shy comment" to your Inquisitor first like he did with Warden if you get his approval high for example, then IB to make first move as Zevran did,Blackwall,Dorian...all dead silent until you make first move.I just wish if they made at least some comment on your Inquisitor that shows they actually have thing for you,as Leliana said in DAO "Oh, chivalry is so dead. Making the lady spill her guts like that...".

YES. Thank you for pointing this out!  My inquisitor was a sexy, smart and beautiful woman but I couldn't help feeling she was creeping everyone out with her desperate attempts to initiate  romance. I mean c'mon. Everyone was so reluctant. I've only romanced Solas and Sera. I can understand Solas and Dorian's lack of interest (and Cassandra) but even Sera seemed not really that into my inquisitor at first! They said romance would be more organic. If by organic they mean my inquisitor became Quagmire, then mission accomplished. Gigity.  Bring back ninjamance. My voice will be heard!.... well, probably not, but still....

lol yeah even Cullen I think says himself that reason because he showed no interest before was because you are intimidating in everyone's eyes? O____O

Wow lol after I got that "feedback" from him I really felt like the only reason why they later on did showed up in my bed was because pretty much "Please I will do anything you say just don't hurt me Q_Q!"....no comment!

I think his response was more along the lines of 'you're in charge', i.e. it would be inappropriate for him to romance his boss and 'we're at war', i.e. there are more important things at stake than starting a relationship. He does say that he was interested, but didn't want to pursue it because of the above.

Yup still many other characters give you "feedback" how scary you are! In fact I think...Varric is one that said something among lines "You scare $hit out of people and they are afraid of you"...yup he was one correction not Cullen! Still considering how your relationship start with everyone...it does make you feel like you are Aveline in this story that is scaring $hit out of everyone so nobody dares to make first move.

You have to consider how extremely tiresome it was for the devs to read about it in almost every single romance thread that appeared on the forums. That is not an exaggeration. I imagine that at some point it must have been like "FINE, no more NPC initiation! STFU about it already!"

I've also seen DG comment on separate occasions that it is tempting to not put in any romances just to avoid all this crap. I can't really blame him for feeling that way.

If this is the case then they should just stick to books or movies.  Seriously, I have to wonder whether they even know they are writing interactive stories for us to shape anymore.

It would be pretty cool in da4 that if you flirt with someone a certain number of times. Let say like 3 times and your not going out with someone else. They ask you if you want to be in a relationship.

I thought this was a given. And that's the reason why he says your chosen LI is not good enough for you during his Act 3 companion quest.

Pretty much.  He just feels comfortable informing Hawke about his obsession with him if (soon to be) romanced. That's why I loved  roleplaying my Hawke turning to Anders for comfort after Fenris leaves and then turn him down after he starts trash talking Fenris.  It lends a bit more weight behind Anders trash talking Fenris again during his Act 3 companion quest. Anders also talks crap to Fenris about Hawke during the party banter. Anders is one salty dude.

As for ninjamancing. I think the problem with it is when it's assumed that the PC returns the feelings.  I don't mind being hit on, actually I love it! But all that's needed is an option to turn the person down and end it. Even if the npc still has an unrequited love for PC. I liked that Liara has an unrequited love for Shepard. I just hated loading up ME2 after turning her down, only to find her picture on my desk. lol!!

Somehow I don't find it believable. Either it was one of a crucial romance points or just that.

I can believe in ninjamances in DAO because for "some" people it wasn't obvious what they've doing, but it's not the same for DA2. Though Merrill is weird as f*ck. I'll give you that.

With DA:2.... nobody hits on you for sex unless you hit the heart icon at least once.

Isabela, as I recall, is the exception. If you forgive her and act like it's all fine after she betrays you (provided you took her into the fade) she will ask for sex.

The other issue is Anders.. I never played as a male, so I couldn't say much on this subject matter. As a female, he never hit on me. But apparently if you're a man he hits on you pretty hard (regardless of whether you hit the heart icon or not?)

Now with Merrill, I hit the heart icon once earlier in the game. During act 3 she came to Hawke's estate and confessed her feelings, to which I replied "You're like a little sister to me."

But as far as I could tell, within my own experiences with DA:2, you hit the flirt option once and you will be approached.

@ AWTEW: (I would quote, but for some reason this forum prevents me from copy/pasting and quoting, and it's sh*tting me off.)

I take it you romanced Cass?

I did that too, as a dwarf. Used the American accent... and all I can say is... what a way to ruin a romantic, heartfelt moment.

"I love you. Meh."

I just want to clarify the Anders bit. This applies to both male AND female here.

After you recruit him, during the dialog for Talk to Anders he apologizes for the previous scene where he explained the whole Justice debacle, "Sorry for dumping all that on you." During the second dialog prompt if you select "[Blue] You did the right thing" -- which comes out as something similar to (the very cheesy) "We can't always know the result of our actions, we can only make them with a true heart," -- he takes that very positively and DOES hit on you, regardless of gender, and without you initiating anything via a heart icon.

You can completely avoid this by selecting Purple or Red during that second dialog, but you will still get 5 or 10 Rivalry respectively. Anders goes off on a tirade against the Chantry, you get an additional dialog prompt, and the conversation ends. But at least in this case you aren't being hit on, and neither do you have to refuse his advances.

If he does hit on you, the resultant dialog does vary for gender, with the females getting "You don't want to be with me" doom and gloom, and the males getting a chance to ask about Karl and Anders's history with men.

It always frustrated me that people spoke about this dialog as if Anders hit on you regardless, when it only happens under specific circumstances, as I described above.

I could go on about my issues with the differences in the dialog between the male and female version but this thread is not the place for that.

This surprises me. I really liked the way my Brit Inquisitor spoke to Dorian. There is one scene where Dorian says "For someone who has killed as many people as you have you're awfully sentimental," to which you can respond "You bring it out in me." I just went "AWWWW" on hearing that one.

I was straight up "sarcastic Hawke" (apart from the time Bethany's life was threatened, then I switched to renegade)... so no wonder I never got hit on.  Thanks for correcting that, nightscrawl.

As for the friendship/rivalry approval thing... I didn't really care. In fact, I've only ever cared if it affects romance.

Do you know how painful it was to reload the game every time I copped a disapproval point from Sera? only after locking in the romance did I stop caring.

I think Inquisition's flirting has been some of the best Bioware has ever done. They've mostly gotten past the really awkward "seems like a waste of a perfectly handsome elf"-type flirting, at least from the romances I've seen. I romanced Solas and I watched a friend romance Josie, and I particularly liked the subtle flirts with Solas. It was quite realistic in that it centered more around wordplay and subtle innuendo rather than the equivalent of "we'll bang, ok?" And it made sense for Solas not to make the first move, given who he is and what he's struggling with. Though I did think he was being rather flirtatious during the Fade Walk sequence, but once again it's quite subtle.

Really, though, I think they all have reason for not making the first move. Technically, the Inquisitor is their boss. Even before they're the Inquisitor, they're the Herald of Andraste, an incredibly important religious icon. Heck, the only ones who don't believe you're literally the messiah are Solas (and he has other reasons for trying to stay aloof) and Iron Bull (but you are in fact his boss and he's very big on not crossing boundaries unless invited to do so). Sera, the least conscientious one of the lot, is really the only one who kind of flirts with you upfront, which makes sense. Well, her and Dorian with a female Inquisitor.

In fact, I loved the friendflirting with Dorian. It reminded me of when I jokingly flirt with my own friends, and it really cemented his relationship with my Inquisitor. I thought that was really well-done. The friendly flirts in general were quite welcome. I distinctly remember a time when Harding was briefing me on the emerald graves, and then got embarrassed when my Dalish Inquisitor reminded her of her heritage. So I took the flirt option to make Harding feel better and the whole thing just gave me warm fuzzy feelings. Another instance was after Bull's quest when he took out the assassins. All of the regular options seemed so impersonal, so I took the flirt instead, and it was such a lovely "I care about you" line. I really appreciated those more friendly flirts that Bioware put in.

Flirting with Dorian as a fem!Quizzie just made me jealous of all the hypothetical male Quizzies out there who he could fall in love with. :( I think he's a super great guy and sometimes my fem!Quizzie is crying in a corner over being friendzoned...

...both by him and Cassandra. :(

But other than that... I felt that Solas was the one flirting with me before I ever got the heart dialogue options.

During my first playthrough I had been cautiously optimistic about meeting Cullen again and this relatively un-cute elf pops up and looks at my character in a certain way... bows his head when he speaks... He made the little Quizzie feel special even before she sealed the Breach. ... and then he mentions that

"You trained to flick an arrow or a dagger to its target. The grace with which you move is a pleasing side benefit."

"So you're suggesting I'm graceful?"

"No. I am declaring it."

Now if that's not a clear invitation I don't know what is. :P So my poor Quizzie thought to herself... well, he's not the cutest guy around but what the hell, he looks like a calm, level-headed man and seems interested. This must be that nice, safe romance... go for it. XD

I agree. The flirting is well done.

I'm playing as a female Qunari and Sera is the only one who openly flirts...well flirting isn't really what she's doing, but she's definitely not hiding how she feels. When you recruit her while playing as a female Qunari IQ, she meets you and then gets slightly side-tracked and says, "oh you're well fit." Lol. So even though I didn't plan to romance her in this game, I still flirted with her just a bit once she got to Haven. You tell her you're glad she's there and she gets flustered and giggles. It's cute.

I also like friend-flirting with Dorian. Every time I do it, he approves. :) He also seems to like talking. Every time I go to end the conversation so I can go to the next person for info, he always tries to keep it going.

And in this playthrough I'm romancing Blackwall. (Yeah, I know about his past that will be revealed. Oh well.) Because of his past, he doesn't know if he ought to get involved with you or not. So your IQ has to draw him in a bit. It shows how the flirting is different with every character. It's nice that it's not all the same with every single person.
