Playing DA:I without previous games

I apologise if this topic already exists somewhere else.

I never played Dragon Age before (not really). Origin gave me a free copy of DA:Origins and I've spent very little time in it because it really wasn't my thing. I find tactical camera annoying and managing more than my own character in the battle is too much work for me. Then comes DA:I and it looks like it's more Witcher-like, which I find really compelling, but alas I have not played previous Dragon Age games, so I wonder if I absolutely have to play the previous ones to have any idea what's going on in the game, who's who and do I have to know all the lore?

I also would like to point out how annoying it is, that I have to ask this question here, as the reviewers don't mention that at all and for me it seems like a legitimate question to be asked.

I appreciate any help.

The in-game codex provides all the exposition you really need, as you need it (or as you find and click on books, scrolls, & such).

You can also head on over to the Dragon Age Keep to customize a world-state based on the plots of the previous two games, but it's not required; the game uses a default if you don't have a custom one.

I feel like I got a better experience from having played the previous games beforehand like experiencing past events from them which are mentioned and knowing who returning characters are. You don't need to use the tactical camera if you don't want to, you can stay in the third-person view if you prefer. Party members can handle things themselves so you only really have to control one character at a time.

It is not necessary to have played the prior games, though it can enrich the experience when you find references to the history.

The game stands on its own, and I will add that I seldom  hop to any of the party characters on Normal setting.  To do some set up for a few more complicated fights, but again, probably fine without it on either casual or normal gameplay setting.

hope you give it a try. It is a very fun game.  Might inspire you to play the prequels to fill in the blanks, but if not, there's still plenty to enjoy  in a standalone experience.

The companion Ai is terrible and requires constant babysitting so you will be using the tactical camera a lot. Sorry.

Depends on difficulty level.  On casual + normal never used the tactical camera so you don't have to babysit compagnions.  It plays more like an action RPG on these settings.

As already mentioned, the codex will give you background on any character, place, or event if you care to read up on it, but none of the quests or characters ever assume you know anything and you actually get the chance to ask about stuff since your inquisitor seems to be a tad out of the loop on DA lore themself.

The tactical mode really isn't necessary and I rarely use it. I loved it in the first DA game, but this game you can get away with not using it unless, maybe, you have an assassin in your party (they may need babysitting). I do hop around to different characters without using the tactical pause, however. I play on hard mode, so maybe tactical is more important in nightmare mode.

I'm also a fan of the Witcher games, and I think DA:I will hold you over for a bit (seeing how Witcher is delayed sooo long).

Take some more time to get into Origins, trust me. It's worth it.

DAO took me at least a few hours to really get into, but once I did, it was great. I really think you'll get more from DA:I if you play DAO and DA2 and some of the DLC. Like, the "mind blown" moments just won't happen for you if you don't really have a good reference point (they will be okay, just not WOWWW).
