Hi everyone. I have some trouble with the quest about Rift Mage Specialization.
Before I accepted this quest, I completed a lot of quests in Exalted Plains and Hinterlands.
When I returned to kill Venatori agents for Venatori Tomes, I can not found anyone of needed enemies.
Instead of Venatori agents I found either nothing or friendly soldiers (looks like patrol).

So, question: Where I can find the Venatori agents for Venatori Tomes?

Thanks.

I found the required enemies in The Hissing Wastes.
Also, I received the 1 extra tome during companion quest "One Less Venatori" for Dorian. There were three newly Venatori agents squads independently of previous quests and enemies.

P.S. I do not checked the Western Approach place for Venatori agents.

You can also find a lot of venatori spellbinders in the Forbidden Oasis.

The nice thing about the spellbinders in the Forbidden Oasis, the Western Approach, and the Hissing Wastes is that they respawn. If you clear a zone and don't find what you need, you can go back.

Yeah, I was questing in the Forbidden Oasis and before I realized it I had collected two of the tomes.

If you are desperate or lazy you can buy Venatori Tomes from the book seller in Val Royeaux (the merchant up the stairs).

I've also seen them for sale at the merchant in Griffon Wing Keep, but it seems to be pretty random. As in, I've gotten it precisely once. Other times, the Griffon Wing Keep merchant has some high-damage weapon as his short list sale item. Do you know if the Val Royeaux merchant has them as part of a short list perk or if it's his standard inventory? Because on my last game, I *did* go there looking for the Venatori Tomes because one of the Rifters in the Exalted Plains bugged out and never spawned, and the book merchant didn't have them.

I was able to get Reaver for my Warrior but I am still having issues with getting the venetori tomes for my mage to get Rift Mage. I did go to the suggested spots on the web site in the Exalted planes but there were no venetori soldiers there. Again as i mentioned before when I do kill a venetori soldier, mage, spellbinder I get normal items drops and nothing pertaining to Rift Mage at all. Does anyone have any other locations for Venetori Tomes I can try?

I went to three to four venetori oriented locations and no venetori tome drops. Also I went to the store in Wing Keep and it doesn't seem to sell the tomes there and I have no clue which store in Val Riyoux would have venetori Tomes let alone know what section of the shops would the tomes be under. Ingredients perhaps?

So annoying...

.
The first merchant on the second floor in Val Royeaux sells some Tier 2 schematics and doesn't update. When you have bought it all he's empty. Later a second merchant joins him, he only sells books and also venatori tomes. The merchant in Griffon Wing Keep has unlimited amounts of them in two of my games.

I don't know how the restock system works to be honest. But I suspect the game checks your progress and prevents you from getting things easy. So, it can vary depending on your progress and choices I think?

Maybe you will not have any chance at all to get easy access venatori tomes if you play as a mage?

To have them at vendors, at least as a mage, you need the 15% connections perk (also unlocks Skyhold vault) and even then it's random but, if there is one, the vendor will have a star over the "other" category when you check his wares.

Any venatori spellbinder has a chance to drop tomes (the rebel spellbinders drop the Nevarran skulls for some reason; I must have picked up like 20 of those just in the first part of the game).

I picked them all up once they infested the Forbidden Oasis (though I actually got one during In Hushed Whispers). Their spawn points are all pretty close together, so you should be able to just run around and kill the venatori until you get enough tomes.

What 15% connections perk? What is the precise name of it? Because I don't remember ever seeing a Skyhold vault. I don't disbelieve you, but I'm not sure precisely what you're talking about.

The first part is pretty close to what I am talking about. The venetori spellbinders and mages are dropping navarran skulls or silks or something other than venetori tomes. This has happened to me in Exalted planes, Western approach, forbbiden oasis , that large tree area and maybe other locations that do have venetori. I haven't checked the whispers yet but I do remember checking the circled zones in a suggested web site and I have completed Dorian's missions in this process of being unable to get the tomes. In a post I started I originally thought the tomes were only get-able in a side quest to expose Corepheus's plan to use the venetori queen as a vessel because I remember a side quest in there getting some venetori something or let alone tomes so that's why I thought that was the only place.

I have done a-lot of leg work and I am hating coming up on empty because I have ran around in circles and searched the three circled spots on a web site someone suggested for 2-3 hours and found no venetori or killed them but got no tomes. I am far from lazy when it comes to this game. I can post my map picks to show proof if I know how to post picks on this website since they tossed the original post pictures via this website for some reason. I swear getting specialized classes in this game is dumb. The Templar tome isn't in Cullen's room.....It's in the smith house top floor....really? Two days to figure that punk out. Why not befriend Cullen to get Templar like how in DAO you needed to befriend Alistar?

As far as the "15% connections perk" I think that's the 15% off for items sold in all stores. I remember a rare stock one which enables rare items to be sold in stores, the discount to all stores, more store availible or something to that effect. I think if I remember right this is all in "connections" (Josephines page).

You need to get the Elite Clientele perk.

I won't spoil the rest for you. Just make sure you go exploring around the keep afterward.

The first part is pretty close to what I am talking about. The venetori spellbinders and mages are dropping navarran skulls or silks or something other than venetori tomes.

The crafting materials are a common drop from them, so there's no issue there.

But having them drop Nevarran skulls definitely sounds like something fishy is going on.

*scratches head* Honestly I feel like I need to put my mage character on hold

I went to the oasis and went to the far right side of the map and venetori people "magically" appeared (they weren't there a few seconds ago). I kill a spell binder and it actually dropped a venetori tome. However I still have been scowering for them and so far I am coming up empty. I spent 9PM to 2 AM in the hissing wastes venetori bashing (no venetori tome drops), exalted planes (no venetori encountered), went to Val Rioyux (Bought mystery box thinking this will give me accsses to buying the tomes but this didn't apparently since i still have no bloody idea where this person is that sells the tomes) and took a quick trip to the Keep in Western approach (shop doesn't sell it).

Also when I was in the exalted planes I remembered a group that usually was Venetori on one of my characters turned out to be a group of freedom of the Dales on my mage character.

So far story wise I have done the whole thing with Hawke and Logain but haven't done the whole Celine mission. I'm at level 19 and am really confused on why no venetori tome drops except for that glitch group. Someone suggested buying the books or something (which i did? I bought some books at a store of some sort. i am unsure if this store is the correct one because when i make return visits it still has schematics and other random stuff. Do I need to buy all of them?) but the store isn't spawning any venetori tomes.

This is driving me nuts.

If these items are "common drops" then why am I not getting any venetori tomes dropped by the necessary people who should drop them! They are just dropping silks, blue something another, and other crafting materials and not the bloody venetori tomes! I had this bloody issue with my Warrior character to get Reaver and apparently I had to go to "specific spots" Not to mention...I found two out of three of the items in a different suggested area (Hinderlands as opposed to the reccomended being Crestwood) then it was reccamended on a bloody website!

GRRRR!!!

Please help!

Actually what I may do is the story mission WICKED MINDS, WICKED HEARTS and pray to god that this will spawn more venetori groups in zones. I was hoping to get my Rift Mage specialization before then but since trying to get it is making me crazy mad I'm better off playing the game more constructivly.

I still want to know how to get the venetori tomes to show up at Val Riyoux though and where this "book store" is. I went to all stores and have done wasteful spending.

I went to the oasis and went to the far right side of the map and venetori people "magically" appeared (they weren't there a few seconds ago).

This is normal. The random encounter system in the game could stand to be a lot more elegant.

If these items are "common drops" then why am I not getting any venetori tomes dropped by the necessary people who should drop them!

The crafting materials (the silk brocade and such) are common. Equipment (weapons, armor, and accessories) are rare. The quest items (Venatori tomes in this case) are very rare.

I've never seen them sold in Val Royeaux (I've never needed to look), so I can't be of help there. (The mystery box is unrelated, though it's a lot of fun; make sure you pick up the golden idol that's on the ground once you buy the box.) I imagine it's from the merchant who sells the codex entries (or the other guy in that shop); you go past the café (where the bard is), up the stairs, and to your left (merchants are in a shop back there), but I don't know under what conditions they would sell them (or if they even do).

My only suggestion, if you've seen one tome drop, is to keep trying to farm them. The three groups in the Exalted Plains should be static encounters (they will always spawn once in predetermined locations and will always drop one tome), but if those were bugged for you, I guess you just have to go hunt for normal spellbinders and kill enough until you get the tomes. :(

Note that the game will spawn encounters once you get far enough away from the spawn point; you can run around in circles in Forbidden Oasis, and there should often be new enemies spawning in, some of which will be groups of Venatori (just keep running around the whole area looking for stuff to kill).

Well that's the thing right now the spellbinders are not respawning so I am running out of ideas on where to go. Also again as i mention on one character an area in the exalted planes spawned venetori people. My mage the spot spawns freedom from the Dales guys.

I may try re-looking and pray that the venetori guys respawn at the one oasis spot but if the area doesn't respawn people then i'll still hop to the story mission since I am at level 19 with 2 ability points that I am saving for rift mage.

I still wish they kept the whole class formula the other two (technically 3) had.

btw does your class unlocks transfer to new characters? I would hate to play another future mage and try to get it again since it's aggrivating enough to try to get the first time. At least the items for necromancer and knight templar (battlemage...whatever) had far far far far far more common item drops while the venetori tomes I swear to god never drop no matter which location I go since I already been to 90% of the locations minus the story places.

Dude, I am in the same position!

I have two Venatori tomes and am romancing Solas, I am afraid if I do not take Rift Mage, I will lose my position with Solas (anyone know anything about that here?).

Unfortunately killed the Venatori on the plains before deciding for Rift and likewise had already completed most of Dorian's quest. The one remaining Venatori did not drop a tome.

I have put a point in Short List Inq perk but the Orlesian bookseller has not stocked the tome. I have taken Griffon's Wing fortress, no tome in the taking, no tome with the seller... I have further cruised the Hissing Wastes, the Hidden Oasis and the Western Approach and encountered very few Venatori and even less Venatori mages and NO TOMES.

I am at my wit's end... WTF!

Any further suggestions gratefully received...

No, you need to complete the quest to pick your specialization for each character.

Sadly, I don't really have further insight. It's never been all that difficult for me to acquire the materials (I even have some of the stuff for the other classes already gathered by the time I pick a specialization, though I am a very slow player), so if you're unsuccessful in farming them, I can't say what else you should try.

My experience with that has been similar to yours... for everything except Venatori tomes. I've sold 9 Nevarran skulls and 11 wisp essences, retaining 3 of each meaning I found 12 and 14, respectively, but only one Venatori tome from some spellbinder in the Forbidden Oasis. This character is only 9th level, so the Hissing Wastes are a bit too scary for him right now. I remember the same thing happening when I was trying to find Assassin weapons. Not a one dropped in Crestwood, but I found 2 in the Western Approach and another in the Emerald Graves. Swimming in Essence Containment apparatuses and that other rogue specialization item. Go fig.

Finnaly about fudgeing time....with fudge!

Where to begin:

So I decided this honestly has been fruitless to i wound up doing "Wicked Minds Wicked Hearts". I completely forgot that there were venetori fights here too. Sadly I have gotten zero tomes from these guys. (coomon items were silk, cotton, everite, blue viriol, and silk brocade). So after the mission I revisted IGN's suggested zone being the exalted planes and nothing changed. Two of the spots spawned no venetori while the one near the dalish camp was still spawning freeman of the dales guys.

So i took a random stab at revisiting Hissing Wastes (had business there anyway) and crashed some portals and took a stab at this final site for a mission called SAND AND RUIN. Location of the site was this mountainous region. I killed some venetori guys and believe it or not....The venetori spellbinders DO drop venetori tomes here. (Notably there is a farmable spot around a camp site with tables close by and it seems like the tomes will be dropped by these respawnable venetori spellbinders).

I almost gave up since I spent my two points already.

*Sigh* Now I can rest easy and calm down.

And my experience contrasts with NaclynE's

I pretty much cleared out the HW on the Sand and Ruin auest and though I killed several spell binders they didn't drop the tome... I guess a respawn just might though.

Part of my reason for wanting rift mage is that I am in a romance with Solas, which is pretty delicate, but the folks on the Solas thread kindly informed me that he doesn't give disapproval for you taking a different specialism so in the end I decided to go for necro.  I found all three skulls exactly where the guides said they would be in the South Coast.

Then I started to [redo] it's been that sort of playthrough, Wicked Minds and guess what? One of the venatori mages in the garden of the Winter Palace dropped a tome! Typical.

I really do think the Rift specialism must be bugged though.

Hope this is helpful.
