Last night I started up a fire specced Rift Mage for single player. what I'm wondering is if I use Wall of Fire/Immolate/Fire Mine on a mob, and then an NPC companion casts the same exact spell, will the mob have two fire dots, or will it just overwrite?

Tested wall of flame + antivan fire on a mob. antivan fire does 89 dps, but the dmg number only increased by about 40 afterwards.

On the other hand wall of fire is dealing normal dmg so its not because fire resistance. Therefore it would seem that dot does stack, but further dot after the first one will do reduced dmg.

Note that this is just one test (I quickly ran out of grenades), so the conclusion is not necessarily accurate. The dmg number might not be popping up properly, or I could have just read it wrong. So don't quote me on that.

My vivienne often casts wall of fire, and I use immolate.

My immolate does more damage per tick, so it's pretty easy to see.

For me, the effect that's added last is what's happening. SO let's say an enemy runs through the wall of fire first and gets burned for 80 DPS. After 2 seconds I immolate, and it now starts ticking for 100 dps. If he then runs through the wall of fire again (silly AI...) he'll start ticking at 80 dps again.

To my knowledge, fire DoTs from different spells do not stack. However, spirit DoTs from the necromancer spec DO stack (from different spells and different mages).

Thanks for the input guys. It's actually trickier than I thought. I was going in assuming that immolate, wall of fire, and fire mine all maintained separate fire dots, and I was just wondering (doubting) if a mob could have two fire dots from the same exact spell; for instance if my main character and Vivienne both had immolate on the same target.

I appreciate the input though. It helps me re-think my setup. I was thinking it would be nice to give Varrick the 10% damage and duration party buff passive while my main character and Viv both had some fire dots to capitalize on that, along with some other buffs. Now that I understand it a little better, I think I'll make sure my main character has the only fire spells to make sure I'm not doubling them up.
