Hey again guys. After lots of 'testing' (read: playing nonstop) I've got an idea of what the problem is.
Maybe Bioware will be able to release a patch to reduce the issue, but it seems to be due to the graphics card overheating.
When I first played on max settings I couldn't select anything without going in and out of the menu and hoping to catch the blue square as it flashed by, but reducing it to 800*600 and taking all the extra shinies (motion blur, film grain, etc) offline it works fine for around 2 hours before the problem starts to appear again, although at a lesser degree for about an hour or so.
Checking around where my graphics card is located (working on a laptop here) and it's incredibly hot. Save, QQ and leave it to cool down for a bit, then it runs fine again. So I feel pretty confident to call it a graphics problem. Maybe a patch from Bioware could help to reduce the problem, but I don't think they'll be able to stop it completely.
Any of you guys using laptops, it might be an idea to get yourselves a cooler pad, desktop users should be able to find something to cool their graphics cards internally. I do hope that Bioware can find some way to work around this in a patch, but I suspect it's down to just keeping our hardware cool.
I doubt that could be the issue. I do use a laptop and do have a cooler pad that I always keep sitting underneath my laptop to fan out all the heat.
Besides, I wouldn't think that people would be very satisfied with a patch that would only reduced the problem. Just resolve it completely.

Well, I've managed to get somewhat further by dropping the resolution to 640 x 480 although I'm still not getting the cursor normally but at least I can move on with the game for now.
My game is also set to 640x480 in windowed mode but I'm still making no progress. Is there anything else you've reconfigured in the configure utility (or anything else) that might have helped you out?

No - it is definitely not the case for me. I have this issue when I first start the game after my computer being off all night.
The minimum resolution in windows mode seems to work most of the time with the occasional [Esc] + [Esc] + [Spacebar] spam. I loaded it on my newer computer and that doesn't even work. I haven't been able to play at all on that one.

No, that's all, everything at minimum in graphics options too.
I've just got to a point where I can't get any further. AGAIN. So gonna give it a rest, see if it starts working when I go back to it.

Having the same problems too... I was so looking forward to play it until I encounter this problem, it is such a headache... I am thinking of reinstalling... see if it works...
Trust me, I've reinstalled my game TWICE... did nothing for me. Had my one save backed up and everything... still stuck. A waste of time.

I am stuck and can go no further in the game. This is NOT ACCEPTABLE.
FIX your broken game. I like the game, but I just can't go past that point.
EA live chat said a patch is coming out the 9th of February. Are you kidding me? Why wait until then to patch this

I lose spacebar functionality once in a while too, but I get it back after starting the task manager. I also get my SHIFT key stuck on/off too (yes I checked my caps lock and its set correctly) and the game will ignore the key up or key down messages for only the shift key. I usually have to exit the game if task switching doesn't fix this.

Compared to DA:O, this is not good for the first week of ME2. At least with DA:O, a patch came out a couple of days after its release. A couple of weeks after its release for ME2? Methinks there might have been a LOT more problems to fix it's going to take that long for a patch to be released. I sure do hope this interaction bug is one of them. I'd really like to see a blue square highlighted around something without being forced to use a work-around.

I agree that it is probably software and programming related because it affects a variety of systems and both ATI and Nvidia cards. But that's largely speculative at this point.
Changing the resolution to 800x600 works for me. I interact with whatever object I need to interact with then go back to a decent resolution. This, however, is not a long term fix.
