1) Have you re-bound the spacebar or the "use" command?

Not on this install, did first time after five minutes of bashing space on the pistol locker at the beginning to no avail, no effect on change so I mapped Use back to Space.

Haven't remapped Space since re-installing though.

2) Can you still storm? (default control is to hold spacebar while moving)

Yes

3) Is your framerate low? (TAKE THIS QUESTION SERIOUSLY, IT'S 99% LIKELY THE PROBLEM)

Slightly, though not terribly, slows down during battle a bit, but not terribly, otherwise, it runs a few frames slower than it should; but again nothing terrible.

4) Have you changed any graphics options other than screen size?

Changed resolution in and out of game, set desktop resolution back since. Because, Esc, Space, Esc only seems to work on windowed mode, and even the only about 10-20% of the time, the game is windowed on lowest resolution, set every graphical option to the lowest possible, as this is the only way the game will run at any respectable frame-rate. With higher settings, it runs at like 10-20 fps.

5) Have you used any of the modification tools posted by other users? (There is no problem with doing so, I'm just wondering if its the source of the problem.)

No, however, other users more adept at programming have said part of the problem could lie in the multiple actions mapped to space. Some have eliminated the problem by modifying the coalesced.ini file. I myself lack the programming prowess to feel comfortable trying to even soft mod this file.

A possible fix may be, as others have done on their own, to release an official patch that modifies the coalesced.ini to split up the three actions to individual keybindings. However, if you think the framerate is the problem than fixing the issue in relation to that might is a pretty good place to look as well.

Thank you kindly for all your help and for getting around to addressing, and hopefully fixing, this issue.

I had the same problem, initially playing in a high-res, all the bells and graphic whistles, but the spacebar didn't work as documented. eventually I ended up reducing the res, and lowering the game-play difficulty to the lowest and now the spacebar seems to work as it's supposed to. Though targeting is still sluggish (my video card is below the "minimum requirements" (NVIDA 8400 GS). Love the game-play though, I love how the AI comes up with different scenarios every time I play through the lower level of the game. (I'm a total newbie to the Mass Effect Universe ;-) )

Ok so I think for some of you the problem is the low framerate. For now, the best solution is for you to get a faster framerate. You can get this by reducing your resolution. We made a technical decision that the game would rely on the framerate being at least a certain level.

I apologize because I know you're great fans, and you want to see the game in full glory even though your machine isn't the fastest. But at the same time, we had to have technical limitations somewhere.

If you think you have a different problem and you want to help me find it, let me know the following things:

1) Do you see a blue targeting icon consistently, or does it flicker out of existence?
2) Please get your exact framerate if possible. There are many free programs to do that. (FRAPS (http://www.fraps.com/) is one. Please note that FRAPS is not endorsed by Bioware, this is just a suggestion if you want to be involved in troubleshooting.)
3) Tell me your graphics card

Hey Thomas_R_Roy thanks for replying to all of us.I have Nvidia 8400 ( adding here that the latest driver from Nvidia makes video blink but that is not an issue for this thread). And yes i overclock it.

My question is only this since i am not an expert:Why the character and all videos play correct and only the mouse is an issue. There is a smoke about a fire focusing in Console versions and making few modifications for pc versions. The framerate is indead the problem but affects only mouse and target.

Anyhow i ll consider getting a better graphic card in the future especially for Bioware games since any other games dont get close to my expectations and i dislike mmos.

Last post from me ..Have a good day all..Will check only for some possible answer.

It's just laughable that you get the content for free at some sexy torrent download speeds and ready to be played (think: 20 mins), but you have to pay to get it via the slow and traditional downloading method. Better off, it's sometimes even weeks after it is available "for free".

And it's not "douchebag players like this", who are killing the industry. It's "douchebag developers like this", who can't get around their head to communicate that value, which is then presumed to be worth paying for by the players.

1) I've completely stopped seeing the blue targeting icon -- doesn't even flicker in and out when I try work-arounds.
2) According to the Fraps program, the game runs at 4 fps on my laptop.
3) NVIDIA GeForce 7150M / nForce 630M

To answer your earlier questions...

1) I've kept the default key, spacebar, as my interact.
2) Yes, I can still storm.
3) Apparently, yes, my framerate is low.
4) I have it set at 640x480 resolution (4:3 aspect) in normal windowed mode -- all the graphics options are turned off and the Number of Cinematic Lights is set to default.
5) No mods at all and it was a clean install.

I know I don't have all the bells and whistles and my system is minimal but I just want to play. But for those who do have good enough PCs and are experiencing this, I don't understand how it could be affecting them too. Hopefully, this information we're providing can be helpful enough to figure out a solution.

Not reading all this threas can't be bothered.

But the G15 keyboard works fine with htis game (i use it...on win 7 64bit)....

The main area of concern with the spacebar issue seems directly related to intel processors....again, not read all the thread, do you have an intel processor?

Friend of mine got a new rig recently....same issue...he contacted Bioware and got a patch sent to him by email.....all his problems fixed :)

Im mazed it even runs at all...never mind at 4fps. That card is barely good enough to run windows, never mind games. The second number on gfx cards denotes how powerful it is, the first number is the series number.

Seriously though, laptops are not designed for games (unless you want to go out and spend a couple thousand on one).

I'm startled that the game runs on my system as well but... there it is. I'm a risk-taker but I don't have that kind of money to buy a really souped-up PC or laptop -- and I've seen a few good laptops; however, constructing my own PC would be even better... if I had the skill.

Nevertheless, I'm not the only one overworking their laptop/PC trying to play a video game that deserves to run on something so much better. I'm sure there are a few others. But at least I can admit that much. :|

hahaha 7th....least you will admit it lol...

Not sure where you are....but if you know anyone who does know how to throw a rig together....you can build a half decent pc for roughly the same amount as a lappy....

Akisvar...yes very droll mate lol....I didnt bother reading all the thread as ppl were still posting (including the op) so threw my observations in from my experience with my friend and fro what I already knew about this issue.

As for queen, if personal insults get you off buddy then great....personally, Im above you to be bothered by it :)

My system is half way decent. although I only have the Geforce 9100 (256ddr2), When I play game full settings there is no lag / stuttering (fraps says 7fps) - targetting not available(blue box), I then killed all the visuals and lowered screen to 800x600 (fraps reports 19-23fps) - targetting is now available but the graphics look like crap. I've tried turning things back up 1 at a time, no matter what I touch targetting goes away. Example: add bloom (targetting goes away - fraps reports 15-17fps), take that away and add 1024x768 (targetting goes away - fraps reports 15fps). Hopr this helps whomever :).

I have a Logitech G15 keyboard and I remapped the use key to E and have this problem when hacking, the spacebar doesn't select the box and neither does the E key. I found that if I reset the key assignment to default, then exit and restart the game, the space bar will work. Just setting the keys to default and not restarting the game didn't work. It is a pain though.......

1) I have no problems with the blue targeting highlight when having just started the game but after an hour or so, I'd lose the blue targeting hightlight. I do play on full resolution w/c on my laptop is only 1280 x 800 x 32 bpp, but with only bloom effects on and 1 environmental shadow.

2)Fraps gives varying frame rates for me, I'm only using a laptop and the frame rate ranges from 10 to 15 and at times goes to as low as 5 even when inside Normandy.

3) Well it's a laptop with the Nvidia CUDA Geforce 9300M GS, 256MB

My laptop isn't exactly made for gaming as well but I got it for a good price and with good enough features. I didn't have any issues on it while playing DAO though.

Mariarab some things better left unsaid sometimes..Saying" can't be bothered " doesnt make the best impression around whether u care to make a good one or not.So that's it..

I still believe there is a fix about mouse lag and fps and mass effect 2 is a great game with issues.

I guess if it's settings that explains it. I recently fiddled around with the 3D settings on my graphics card, and I've had this problem since.

Weirdly enough, if I activate the heightened reflexes ability as a soldier it works fine. I stood next to Samara on a mission for like 2 minutes trying to talk to her without success, then the second I activated the ability I was able to interact with her.

i've tried everything. putting my computer on the 800x600. switching my spacebar key to enter. i'm soooo frusterated!! i spent 2 hours yesterday to chat with someone in the ea games support because when the time ran out, it would disconnect me. by the time i finaly talked to someone and explained the problem we all seem to be sharing. he told me he only did techinal support and i would have to try and find someone to help me and then signed off. so is it basically if i want to play this game, i have to get a new computer??

So far, everyone has confirmed their framerate is below about 10.

For now, I don't know if it'll be fixed in a patch, so all I can do is suggest ways to fix it.

1) Make your window size smaller

2) Play in windowed mode

3) Some graphics drivers will let you reduce the quality in the settings

4) Close all other programs

For some people, different levels will run faster or slower.

Again I know this sucks and I'm not happy saying it, but we decided to use the graphics card for the blue selection squares, and if its not fast enough there's really no simple way around it for now.

Well it sucks that the minimum system specs are there for a reason and if you have a video card greater than even the recomended system specs this spacebar issue is still a problem.  Didn't you guys at least test it on an older video card which is above the system specs just to make issues like this not a problem.

I really do hope there will be a fix for this, why would you add something like this to the graphics card portion and not the RAM?

This is similar to my problem. If I remap to the Spacebar, everything works. But it requires a save and reload.

@ BIOWARE:  Since the spacebar does work, it tells me there is possibly a dual issue where framerates and/or bindings are affecting it. As a programmer, I would look at the variables for the code sequence that activates terminals "specifically". I bet somebody hardcoded for the spacebar key and not a variable.

Here's another hint. The help/tip dialog boxes are displaying the base bindings, and tooltips show old binding even if you rebound those keys to different keys. I'm really thinking you have a mixture of hard coded binding and variables, but again, it appears to be only affecting the terminal objects. The tips screens are difinitely hard coded instead of variables. I can tell by looking at it. This also shows me that you hard coded for testing (which makes perfect sense) but missed the reintroduction of variables at some point.

I hope that helps.
